No kidding but I reckon the reason I got an A in English language GCSE was because I watched/read all the cut-scenes in Final Fantasy VIII instead of revising. I've always stood that Final Fantasy helped me expand my vocabulary and language skills.

And Starfox on the SNES has taught me that animals can make good aeroplane pilots once they've been trained to fly through rings and fire them mini-nukes at boss characters.

I loved the first Monkey Island to bits, but big problem: I couldn't read! For a text based game that was a hindrance.

I was a couple years behind most kids my age for reading level. I'd play with my best mate who did all the reading, but because of the hours we spent on it I actually learned to read from playing a game.

After that my parents really couldn't get away with saying anything bad about my gaming. :)

This. Civilaztion made me love history from a very young age.

Deus Ex and Fallout 3 has taught me something about American history which I never previously knew.

such as the origin of the statue of liberty, what it mostly made out of (random fact)and the connection between J.D.Rockafella (jr) and the The Library of the League of Nations.

In fallout3 I learnt some early American politics via the terminal in the national archive

of course I double checked this in due time but I was pretty surprised.

Civilisation taught me what Ghandi would have been like if he developed The Bomb first, the prospect is terrifying

I've actually got a fair amount of firearms expertise owed to first-person shooters. I've learned a lot of handling drills for pistols, rifles and shotguns, and on occasion, have been able to help people figure out how to operate their new guns simply because I'd paid attention to the handling animations in videogames (before you say anything regarding the qualifications of aforementioned people to own guns, the AR-15 is a fairly unintuitive platform).

I was never under any illusions about the "realism" factor, but modern FPSes at least seem to go out of their way to figure out the proper way to represent the use of the guns you'll be staring at for the entirety of the game.

I learned that nothing can beat the music of hundreds of voices screaming in unison!

And also Rock Band/Guitar Hero taught me how to be better at guitar because I wasn't able to use the pinky finger before those games

Actually, I've learned a little bit of First Aid and Medical from games.

I make sure things are legit before I go sticking things in me, though, so don't worry.
Jesus, wouldn't wanna be saved by you.

On topic, probably hoy a car works thanks to NFS. I mean the manual stuff since where i live there are no automatic cars. Also, thanks to S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I did a whole bunch of research on the chernobyl disaster since i found it very interesting. Learned alot from that.
Likewise, there is a group for everything STALKER on the escapist http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/S-T-A-L-K-E-R.

I learnt a alot of history though games, from Age of Empires to Medal of Honour

I learned everything I know about Three Kingdoms and Warring States history from playing Dynasty and Samurai Warriors and I also learned quite a lot about English and European history by playing Age of Empires.
