Age of Empires taught me about generals and their strategies, and what kinds of fighting techniques and implements were employed by who and when. Helped me get into the metallurgy field that I'm in today.

You learned a lot about weapons from video games? Give me a few minutes to leave before you accidentally kill BOTH of us.

Pretty much every video game gets SOMETHING important wrong about its weapons. Swords? Yeah, try blocking/parrying a swing with the EDGE, see how well that goes for you. Sure, hold your blade in a ridiculous reverse grip so you can't get ANY power in your swing. Cutting angle? What's that?

Guns? Where to begin....

-Guns are about 1000 times harder to EFFECTIVELY use in a gunfight than in the hardest videogame. Full auto? There's a reason it's only used for suppression fire where the objective is not actually to hit anything. Effective hits are ONLY made with semi-auto fire.
-Accurate fire while moving is not easy and requires a LOT of training. Every FPS character is some kinda hyper-trained ninja SEAL superman given how accurate they can be in rapid fire while moving/jumping etc. Yet despite this they all have horrible trigger discipline. Ever seen a videogame character NOT have their finger on the trigger? Thought so.
-PLEASE rack the slide/pull the charging handle/pump your shotgun EVERY TIME you pull it out. I appreciate you wasting live rounds like that. Makes it easier for me to kill you. Also, how do you load shotgun shells so fast? Do they grow out of the palm of your hand?
-Why do all videogame shotguns act like they have a 1" barrel? Most shotguns can make a fist sized pattern out to 50 ft or more. (about 100 times more accurate) I've heard people seriously talking about using shotguns for home defense 'because you dont have to aim'. That's right, choosing a HD gun from VIDEOGAMES.
-For the love of God, learn the difference between a clip and a magazine.
-Bring your knife to a gunfight. I DARE you. Unless you are within 20 ft of an unaware combatant, you WILL die.
-Try shooting two handguns at the same time. But first let me hide behind this concrete wall so that only YOU get a round in the chin.
-Desert Eagle? Shut up about that useless pile. I don't know why movies and gaming has such a hardon for the thing, but it's completely useless in a fight. Big, heavy, low capacity and high recoil that makes quick follow-up shots difficult. If you want an accurate, powerful pistol, the 1911 is vastly superior in every way.

Now despite all this, that doesn't mean you can't learn ANYTHING about guns from games. You can get a basic idea about function and different types, and I sometimes see a gun I don't know about in a game and look it up later. But DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE think that anything you can DO with guns in games translates into real life. Get a solid grounding in firearms use and safety separate from games, and you can appreciate guns in games and the context of their use much better (especially when they get something right).

A buddy told me about a guy at the range who TRIED TO CURVE HIS BULLETS LIKE THE MOVIE 'Wanted'. He shot a round through the three lanes to his right, which were fortunately empty. Do that kind of shit and you WILL have range staff pointing their weapons at you. I've seen it happen.

I get worked up about this sort of thing (how ever could you tell?), but I encourage anyone who plays games (especially shooters) to ask your buddy who has guns (everybody knows one) to take you to the range. It's great fun and can enhance your enjoyment of your favorite videogames as well. There was also an article on here months go by an Escapist staff member who obviously knows what he's doing, about guns and gamers. It's a good read and I recommend everybody check it out.

Dude, chill out. And use the quote button since you obviously were looking to direct this at someone...

Oh and also, welcome to the Escapist. :p

The best example I can think of is when I had to give a presentation at school about Dawkin's theory of The Selfish Gene. I played on MGS1 where Liquid Snake decided to explain it to me in detail, which made it a lot easier.

I learnt a lot about military tactics from the Total War games

Now, when someone watches, say, The Patriot and predictably ask "why do they stand in a line and shoot at each other point-blank?!", I can answer

I learned english in general. Now I can write stuff without a single mistake! Fuck YEAAH (all hail A+ in english)

Also, I learned that the best way to win a war is running around with a knife stabbing people, or dual 1887 model shotguns.

Rome: Total War gave me an insight into the complex world of an Empire (Eg the Romans) and how the senate system works to unify the city-states.

It also taught me that Greek people are very stubborn.

Gambling from Red Dead. Some say that the AI you play against is unrealistic. I've played with my friends and family, and they react almost the same.

Age of Mythology taught me a lot about Greek and Egyptian mythology, not so much Norse because I already knew a lot of it.

I learned a lot about music and stuff like that playing GTA games. Vice City got me interested in 80's era so I did a research on that and I learned a lot about the 80's. I learned a lot about weapons, crime organizations, vehicles etc. playing various games and watching movies. And I believe I learned quite a lot about English language by playing video games.
