Oh, that? I learned it in a videogame

You learned a lot about weapons from video games? Give me a few minutes to leave before you accidentally kill BOTH of us.

Pretty much every video game gets SOMETHING important wrong about its weapons. Swords? Yeah, try blocking/parrying a swing with the EDGE, see how well that goes for you. Sure, hold your blade in a ridiculous reverse grip so you can't get ANY power in your swing. Cutting angle? What's that?

Guns? Where to begin....

-Guns are about 1000 times harder to EFFECTIVELY use in a gunfight than in the hardest videogame. Full auto? There's a reason it's only used for suppression fire where the objective is not actually to hit anything. Effective hits are ONLY made with semi-auto fire.
-Accurate fire while moving is not easy and requires a LOT of training. Every FPS character is some kinda hyper-trained ninja SEAL superman given how accurate they can be in rapid fire while moving/jumping etc. Yet despite this they all have horrible trigger discipline. Ever seen a videogame character NOT have their finger on the trigger? Thought so.
-PLEASE rack the slide/pull the charging handle/pump your shotgun EVERY TIME you pull it out. I appreciate you wasting live rounds like that. Makes it easier for me to kill you. Also, how do you load shotgun shells so fast? Do they grow out of the palm of your hand?
-Why do all videogame shotguns act like they have a 1" barrel? Most shotguns can make a fist sized pattern out to 50 ft or more. (about 100 times more accurate) I've heard people seriously talking about using shotguns for home defense 'because you dont have to aim'. That's right, choosing a HD gun from VIDEOGAMES.
-For the love of God, learn the difference between a clip and a magazine.
-Bring your knife to a gunfight. I DARE you. Unless you are within 20 ft of an unaware combatant, you WILL die.
-Try shooting two handguns at the same time. But first let me hide behind this concrete wall so that only YOU get a round in the chin.
-Desert Eagle? Shut up about that useless pile. I don't know why movies and gaming has such a hardon for the thing, but it's completely useless in a fight. Big, heavy, low capacity and high recoil that makes quick follow-up shots difficult. If you want an accurate, powerful pistol, the 1911 is vastly superior in every way.

Now despite all this, that doesn't mean you can't learn ANYTHING about guns from games. You can get a basic idea about function and different types, and I sometimes see a gun I don't know about in a game and look it up later. But DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE think that anything you can DO with guns in games translates into real life. Get a solid grounding in firearms use and safety separate from games, and you can appreciate guns in games and the context of their use much better (especially when they get something right).

A buddy told me about a guy at the range who TRIED TO CURVE HIS BULLETS LIKE THE MOVIE 'Wanted'. He shot a round through the three lanes to his right, which were fortunately empty. Do that kind of shit and you WILL have range staff pointing their weapons at you. I've seen it happen.

I get worked up about this sort of thing (how ever could you tell?), but I encourage anyone who plays games (especially shooters) to ask your buddy who has guns (everybody knows one) to take you to the range. It's great fun and can enhance your enjoyment of your favorite videogames as well. There was also an article on here months go by an Escapist staff member who obviously knows what he's doing, about guns and gamers. It's a good read and I recommend everybody check it out.

Uncharted 2 has taught me many things, like the fact that when you jump gravity completely forgets that it's supposed to be pulling you down and you fantastically slide toward the ledge or whatever you are trying to reach, and ducking behind a brick wall most likely over 50 years old will save you if a tank fires at you.

In all seriousness, I've learned a lot of english from videogames in general and something about guns 'n shit but I'd never imagine I would know how to completely and perfectly use a gun based on something I learned in Call of Duty etc.

Hell, Michigan is a real city. (Twisted Metal 3)
Chernobyl Incident (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)
Oh, and Beat Hazard taught me that I will probably never have another seizure, because if anything was going to do it, that would.
Random other things I don't remember from various other games...

I've learnt many things from games and it is one of the arguments I bring up when people try to claim games as evil things which prevent kids from learning.

I learnt basic first aid from a game. (America's Army)
I learnt about weapons from a game. (Counter Strike, America's Army etc.)
I've learnt ethics from games. (Variety of games)
I've learnt drugs are bad, M'kay from games. (Variety again, normally from games with drug related connotations)
I've learnt proper grammar, spelling and most of those big scary words I use from games. (once again a variety of games)
I've learnt social skills from games. (MMO's aren't just for social recluses, I may not be able to go out and have a beer with them but I can still have proper conversations with people online)
I've learnt military tactics from games. (RTS Games and the battlefield series)

I could go on and on but I think you guys get my point.

I've also learnt lots of real world trivia from games.

I learned that once we achieve first contact with other aliens that have been there wayyyy before us they will all speak english
actually in most instances in video games when aliens are "speaking english" there is actually just a nifty translation machine in the heads of all the games people. ex: Mass Effect1&2

OT: i knew what stenography was and how to solve a simple steg puzzle in a college course because of oblivion and the commentaries of Mankar Cameron :D

That America was the First to 25 kills in world war 2. (Tac Nuke)

That when you defeat your main opponent. Expect to fight them 2 to 3 more times, each time tougher than the last... except for the last.

Stick and fucking move.

And I quote (But not very accurately) "Any problem cause by a tank (or insert weapon of choice here), can be solved by a tank (or previously inserted item)"

That despite the best and latest weaponry at our disposal, most satan-like creatures of never-ending doom can only be killed by love, courage, peace, or some other cheesy emotion i don't have.

Everything's a big dick contest... and mine's bigger.

I learned words like accuracy, agility and status from pokemon.
I learned some words like afflicted or flanking.
I learned that metals are made my mining rocks, getting ores and minerals and putting them in a furnace to melt them and them put them in molds from Runescape.
Words like hide when referring to animal skins as well.
Stuff like recoil and minor ballistics training from any game that involves throwing objects over large areas taught me that objects need to be thrown at a higher angle in order to gain the most distance but not too high of course. I also learned about wind resistance on objects from Worms.
My discussion of videogaems has expanded my vocabulary by a large amount and I now know things like plot development, character development, pacing in stories and how people become emotionally attached to characters in a story.
Screw that school thing, just give me more games.

Thanks to RuneScape, I learned that bronze = copper + tin.
That's where I learnt that to.

...I'm so ashamed...
Really? I wasn't. That was one of my selling points to get membership for the first time. That I could learn stuff.
