I learned what a "vassal state" was, and what a claymore looks like (the mine, not the sword).

My boyfriend and I were reading a forum together when we both laughed at a joke referring to claymores. He thought he'd caught me out, laughing at something I didn't understand, but then I explained to him that I knew exactly what a claymore was. He clapped his hands over his ears and insisted that women don't know that stuff, no way, lalala, can't hear you.

I learned that you can't regenerate health in real life.

Edit: From a shotgun blast to the face. Or from a chainsaw cutting through your chest.
Oh, you can, it just takes a lot lot longer, thats why all the Player charecters are skinny and perfect, there internal system is going faster then a cheeta on speed.

OT: I learned all my stealth from MGS, it helped me get away from teh cops once, Long story.

And I practice Swordsmanship, and playing games like Dynasty warriors helped me with my sword and spear training.

I just hate how I actually took the effort to go to school and learn it for a while just to instantly be thrown into that crowd due to the ever-growing stereotype...
/end rant.
You got to take Japanese lessons in school, that's just unfair!!! I would've liked to, I can say that by reading manga they always insert side notes when there happens something out of the ordinary according to western culture so you get a small small small tiny education in Japanese culture from this and you learn that Arigato is Thank you and so on but No major things.

Also always be careful about what you learn from games and the sort since the translators might be wrong in just translating since the meaning might be a totally different one!

I learned about how diseases and indeed micro-organisms and to a degree the process of bio recombination works from playing Dead Space.

EDIT: I also learned of the greatness of the Sangheili from playing Halo 2.
Too bad bio recombination isn't real.
That we know of.
But when the Space zombies show up, guess who'll be prepared!

I've been inspired to read up on things that I've heard about in video games, like the Knights Templar when I played Broken Sword way back.

I learned from Sim City that politicians are jerks.

Can you tell the difference between an Assault Rifle and a Sub-Machine gun thanks to Modern Warfare? Did you learn what flanking was by playing StarCraft?

You can get a nice amount of trivia from playing videogames.

For example, I learned that the Spetsnaz exist from playing Modern Warfare 2 and what the difference between a rear wheel drive and front wheel drive by playing Forza Motorsport 2.

How about you?
I learned that the Knights of St. John were the rulers of Malta back in the day from playing Empire total war. :)

I'm going to toss out a firecracker here by saying that in no other game have I learned more about myself and how I act than during my days in WoW.

Although that is arguably less a game and more like a massive chatroom and forum, I was put into a large array of situations that led me to decisions that, upon reflection and looking at what I decided to do, told me alot about my own behavior. Although it was all "fake", I learned about how I deal with people, how I handle positions of authority, as well as how I handled my own wishes and desires. Although the game itself is somewhat meh and I am not a fan of grinding my brains out in raiding, the interactions in that game allowed me to learn a startling amount of things about myself that I probably would not have otherwise learned, or at least not this early in my life.

I'd already learned both those things before I even bought a Dreamcast.

Then why did the (overly blatant) advertising bother you? I thought it was kinda neat.
