I love threads like these. I see all the complaints and immediately want to go and spam the hell at whatever is being bitched about this time around.

In most modern FPS games, a knife attack or striking the enemy with your weapon is much more powerful than bullets. I am fine with stealth one-hit knife kills or from-behind gun butt knockouts, but against an aware enemy it is just dumb. I know "it's just a video game", but that bothers me to no end that you can sprint past someone firing at you in MW2 and deftly slit their throat without even breaking stride.

It is very hard to kill a vigilant, defending person with a knife. As part of my law schooling, I work at the prosecutor's office and have an opportunity to read dozens of police reports along with other court documents. Most knife attacks are non-fatal, and even then the victim receives as many as 20-40 cuts and puncture wounds. And these are on civilians - imagine against a trained soldier.

I'm probably the only one who cares... but I would propose "grapple-style" combat when someone tries to melee an aware target, similar to what Call of Duty 3 had, but not as scripted like in that game.
I like you quite a lot.

Don't worry - in Black Ops everyone has Commando (IE warping from a distance for instant kill). At least then everyone is in the same boat.

Man, you gotta love these topics that tell you everything you need to know in the title. Without even reading the OP (Though I did anyway, don't ban me) I can already tell that this is another pointless topic where someone has decided to share their opinion for no real reason other then "Why not?"

I've always thought that it's weird how a hail of bullets won't necessarily kill someone, but a single stab will, when in real life it's generally the opposite. So much for 'realism'.

The problem with that is, how would a grapple work in a fps. In gears of war 2 when you get into a chainsaw battle, you cannot get killed by any spectators watching your battle. This usually ends with the winner of the battle getting a kill and then getting insta-killed by someone waiting behind him. The reason that this would not work in a first person shooter is because you die quite a bit faster. In a game like call of duty it takes 2-4 bullets if you are not lagging or not using a sniper rifle. The reason the knife is there is for you to kill someone who is to close fast so you can get on with the game. If there was a grappling system it would give more of an even chance for the other person to win, and get out alive, but it wrecks the purpose of what the knife is to begin with. If it was put it, I really doubt many people would use it.

You're not.

Most of the COD Youtube community is crying out for the knife to be changed to a 2-hit kill. Nothing makes me angrier than when I outplay someone, get to the side of them and start to shoot them down, only for them to lunge through my bullets and one hit kill me with the auto-lock knife.

It's worse than ever in Black Ops, you don't even need Commando.
The problem is that if the knife is not a one hit kill then it would be more useless than the plasmids in Bioshock. The knife has always been a weapon that while useful in its own way, is one of desperation (except with commando in MW2 which is why that perk no longer exists) to be used in a hectic firefight where you just used up all you rounds and someone is still shooting you, or at extremely close range. If the knife was made a two hit kill and I was in a situation where I had an empty light machine gun at point blank range facing an enemy with a fully loaded shotgun, I would have a better chance of survival attempting to reload my weapon and praying to god his reflexes are so slow as to not notice me for ten full seconds. Incidentally, you'd probably like BC2 since the knife really is useless in that game. It's still a one hit kill, but it takes an incredibly long time to pull out, and doesn't land it's mark half the time even if it does come in contact with the enemy's character model.

I would agree. It's really annoying when I shoot at someone who then teleports five feet and knifes me in the face. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 did it better, I think. It takes a while to pull your knife out and slash, so in a face-to-face battle, you probably will lose.

It doesn't bother me as
a.all my Online FPS games (you know the kind) is not insta-kill and
b.it's quite fair to be honest in Bad Company 1.

You see if bullets were realistic you'd drop your controller and go play some Halo. Guess knifing is a way of 'realism' maybe?

you do bring up a good point but in games like call of duty most characters are soldiers and know where a knife should go to kill a person in one stroke.
Man, if only soldiers were trained in melee defence as well as they were in meelee offence.

Hah! I get it! Since John Locke uses knives a lot in the show, and we're talking about knives! [/buzzkill]

OT: Well, I always had the idea of knives putting enemies in a 'dazed' state, which they recover from in a bit longer than it would take otherwise. That way, knives wouldn't be a one hit, and you'd get a chance to shoot or knife your opponent back, but it'd still be a powerful reward for getting close.

Realism is irrelevant, it's designed to reduce the incentive to get that close if you have a close-range weapon (you're now equal with the other guy, if you were 5 meters away, you'd have a serious edge).

You're welcome. Also, you should watch Lost. If it gets confusing, just visit Lostpedia. [http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page]

I'm totally ninja in CoD with my knife because I get behind them and make my kills, I'm not like the people who run across a clearing to get their stab. It's more effective if you wait for someone to come around the corner.
