Sounds to me like she is being extremely over-bearing and over-protective with something that she knows nothing about. Point this out to her. Tell her that you are safe and she has nothing to worry about. Let her know that her checking your messages makes you feel like she thinks you are stupid and unable to protect yourself. While you say this, work in the fact that it is hypocritical of her seeing as she can't even tell a legit email from spam and scam. Bring up the point that you are a senior(?) in high school and are about to be leaving for college(?) and that you are old enough to be able to handle yourself.

If that doesn't work, let her know that her over-protectiveness is making you feel incompetent and unsure of yourself being able to live on your own.

Hope this helps.

What. The. Fuck.

I knew Dr. Phil was evil. That's why no one in my house watches it.

Pretty much what he said.

From your profile I assume your 18-19 now, so you are actually of the age where you can ask to be treated like an adult, because you are one. I'd emphasis this heavily.

don't *****, my mom has a keylogger on my MSN. Luckily she trusts me enough not to read through it. Not that she would find much interesting.

My opinion... Just ignore her when she asks to see the messages. She can't make you, no matter what she says. From the sounds of it, she woundn't be able to turn the internet off on you and only turn it on for herself. She can't make you bring up those messages, she can't take the internet away from you because you didn't bring up those messages (at least not without taking it away from herself anyway). She can't call you a disapointment without you being able to fire something back at her ("Yea? Well you raised me").

Use the computer nude. Trust me, it teaches everyone to knock after the first time. Psychological warfare ftw!
This could work too.

How old are you? Pull the age card on her. Burst into her phone conversastions demanding to know who she is talking to and tell her to hang up the talk box. Show her what a double standard she has and rub it in her face.

Incidentally, you know what Phil's doctorate is in? Clinical nutrition. Not psychology or any other discipline in which he claims to be an expert. And for a clinical nutritionist he's awfully fat and slovenly---he looks like Mean Gene Okerlund minus the steroids.

Move out of your mother's house. Problem solved
Seconded. If your Mom's outlook is so easily influenced by opinion shows disguised as "helpful journalism" like Oprah, there's no way you're going to change her mind about anything.

My ex's Mom was an "Opralyte" for years, & I finally knew she'd lost her mind when she started referring to herself in the third-person, saying things like "Oprah says blah blah blah food is good for us.. Oprah says we should read this book..." and the like.

Oprah Winfrey is about as qualified to tell people how to raise their kids as Dr. Phil is to tell people how to drywall their basement. And Dr. Phil himself is so incredibly full of shit that I could go on for days about how his diagnoses and advice have been debunked by real Psychiatrists and Psychologists who are eminently more qualified than him, and how his "advice" is more about ratings than it is about helping people, but I won't.

BTW, if anyone (your Mom for example) says that Dr. Phil is a mental health practicioner of any kind, you should probably let them know that his doctorate is in Nutrition, not Psychology or Psychiatry.

Asking Dr. Phil for mental health advice is like asking Bob Vila how to do a triple bypass...

And his son is a complete douchebag.

Fuck I hate the fact I know so much about these people!

I'm sorry man, but no amount of logic or common sense can change the mind of an "Opralyte" and it sounds like your Mom's already on her way. If she starts to begin her sentences with "Oprah says,"

Run.

I bet your mom also told you not to believe all the shit you get told by TV shows. All parents do (or should do), but they also shouldn't forget. That's what I say to my parents at least when they talk to me about stupid shit they've heard.

LOL "Old people these days..." First it was old farts sitting on the porch sippin' whiskey and bitching about the youth of today, now its the youth of today sitting in front of a computer, sippin' red bull and bitching about old people.

The circle is now complete.

I do feel your pain because for a while my mother was the same way (and she's a doctor so, generally a fairly intelligent human being... but obviously lacking on the logic side of things). Worst thing she's ever done is hit the power switch on my surge protector to get me off of the computer... thank god she didn't ruin the thing.

I agree with the guy who recommended using the Socratic method if you're quick with your wits and are good at debating, otherwise you might just dig the hole deeper for yourself. Alternatively if she persists in checking every single message and every single shorthand that she doesn't know tell her to go fucking Google it and find out... but then again seeing that she thinks something related to a phone message is the same thing as a computer message you might wanna tone down the technical terminology because I'd be surprised if she knew what Google was.

Good luck.

Your mother is an idiot, my friend. Do what i did, rig a shotgun trap mechanism to your door to blow her away as soon as she opens the door.
Or you know you can always get a lock, or move out, or explain to your mother that she has to use her own damn brain for once and that the dribble Dr. Phil and the brown, female Dr. Phil spout can't be listened to on a regular basis.
