See, the whole "Anakin vs Obi-Wan" thing was a good climax, but other than that, it's just a bunch of action scenes where the fights were for the kids, but the dialogue was more Adult-oriented,

I also hated Episode 3 'cause of all the hype it got, so I guess it just comes down to expectations sometimes.
I heard someone yell "I waited 20 years for THAT?!" at the end of Episode 3. I applauded him. I almost put Watchmen instead, but that's not really "overrated" because it did pretty terrible in sales, and I would rather watch it than Episode 3 again. (I just saw Watchmen with a bunch of comic geeks that thought it was just amazing.)

EDIT: I wouldn't even say that Watchmen is a "bad" movie; just not my cup of tea. I hated the characters, (except Rorschach) and I was annoyed with the fight scenes being interupted with talking and strong political commentary.

Definitely The Lord of the Rings. Not any one movie in particular, but the series as a whole. Instead of attempting to explain why I hate it so much though, I'll let Randall from Clerks 2 handle this one.

I don't hate the movie, but I don't see what all the hype was about. Inception. I watched it last night, and it was entertaining, and the visuals were nice, but the story line wasn't as deep as I initially thought it was going to be. I think "The Prestige" was marginally better, but it received far less attention than Inception. Synopsis, I thought Inception was good, but I didn't think it was good enough to get so many perfect reviews.

The Hangover, "Comedy of the Year?" fuck off it is horrid,
One of the worst comedies I've seen. The problem is that it appealed to the masses. Your every day Dick and Jane who's idea of hilarity is "28 Dresses" found this movie to be edgy and "wrong", but still funny. Yes compared to what they're used to watching, it pushes the envelope, but it was so tame and no joke developed. The movie had potential but the jokes were just too predictable and did not have any impact.

Never trust Roger Ebert and his humor.

You will. One day. I hope. I really do hope.
You know he only got rewarded for it cause he kinda died, right?
Really and i'd love to see why you think that
I didn't like the guy, but he was excellent as the Joker.
I think his death actually tainted the performance because he was a shoe in for the award as soon as he died.
I feel he would have won anyway, but once he died they might as well have buried the award with him before the awards ceremony.

The movie itself was over rated, it was like nobody could hate it because some B list actor gave the performance of his life (literally) and it's so wrong to speak ill of the dead.
We all love to jump on the bandwagon don't we?

I actually have two:

Avatar: I usually like movies that put effort into their visuals, but the plot was a jumbled mix of things that have been done a thousand times over.
2001: I did enjoy the Dave/HAL portion, but the beginning and end murdered it for me. It didn't feel like it knew what kind of movie it wanted to be.

Well, Avatar is too obvious an answer, even though I hated that with a passion, but I thought 300 was horrible, and not just on a historically accurate basis, but I hated it because everyone said that the action was "awesome", but compared to the action of some other films, such as Heavy Metal 2000 or Kill Bill, it was nothing special .

I love Avatar, but then again I'm a person who likes a 3 hour movie full of action, romance and sci-fi. ;)

Well I didn't think Superbad was that great. Everyone was wigging out about how awesomely funny Super bad was and to me it was just a "meh" style movie.

Goodfellas.

Mostly boring and very longwinded I found the first hour pretty good and then my opnion of it just deteriorated as the movie went on. I found most of the characters boring execpt Robert De Niro and the only reason I remember him because he was a smooth badass.

People claim it to be up there as "One of the greatest Gangster Movies ever" but I found it to be a very monotonous documentary. By the end I hated the protagonist and I was relieved when it was over.

I preferd The Departed as a gangster movie: The characters were more interesting, there was tension all the way till the end and Jack Nicholson was the devil in this film; he was bloody scary.

Except He is hardly the first dead person to be nominated for an oscar so its not like death is an automatic win. I can't even list the general popularity of it as a guranteed win. James Dean was a huge public icon and didnt win after he died.

I was a military history major at West Point so yeah, that movie offended me on an intellectual level like no other.
Em you do know that was not based on the actual battle but on a comic book series loosely based on the actual battle? It is not even remotely a historical account nor did I ever hear of it claim to be but that is just me.

OT: Probably Fight Club. I liked it as a whole but I was expecting something more given the praise it gets.

There's an over-rated movie in the back of my head I hate for fitting this thread's criteria but I can't remember...

So people hate movies because they feel it doesn't deserve that attention and praise(?) right? Right?

Riiiiight. Who else would they have given it to that year exactly? Robert Downey Jr. whom was nominated for being in a f***ing comedy? Also, remind me who got it this last year. Oh thats right Christoph Waltz for his villain in 'Inglourious Basterds'. I'm not saying that his death did not seal the deal for him winning it, but to say that he ONLY got rewarded it because he was dead is both ignorant and asinine. That role is the reason why the movie is so overrated, if Ledger had played joker in a more Jack Nicholson style, people would not see the movie as being so great and would be less likely to overlook its glaring flaws.

As for the original topic, i'd have to agree with Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. That movie had no suspense, no drama, no illusion of tension, because whenever the characters got into a difficult situation, they were saved by ghosts, earthquakes, trees, etc. Another is Kill Bill 1&2. I found both to be boring and too self indulgent, but then again i do not like most of Tarantino's work.

I am about to say two films that may very well get me ostracised from this forum, but Pulp Fiction and Fight club. I found both of them to be overly stylized and I never once found myself involved with any of the characters or their situations.
I don't really get the fuss over Fight Club either. Granted, I knew the twist before I saw the film, but the film shouldn't rely on just the twist, and whilst I quite enjoyed it it certainly wasn't amazing.

I found the ending to be especially overblown, to the point of ridiculousness (don't know how much that differed from the book, if at all).

As for an underrated film: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

Dear fucking god, how is it that no one ever talks about that film?!

If you've seen enough sci-fi movies Inception is an amalgamation of alot of other (arguably better) films. Also the CGI was terrible.
I'll say it: What CGI?

Interesting stuff in this thread... you start to notice a handful of patterns:

1) People who like a movie because they're "supposed" to--either critics or peers sing its praises, so they must be right.

2) People who hate a movie irrationally because they feel other people like it irrationally, to bring cosmic balance to the universe (The way I do with Boondock Saints, which isn't bad in and of itelf).

3) People who hate a movie because other people like it. Period. It was a big hit, and no one that likes big hits is cool. It's basically the corollary to 1) above--it's not what the critics say is "great cinema," so you must hate it in order to further validate the criteria that make "great movies" great.

(I'm looking at you you Dark Knight-hating hipsters out there. For all its flaws, the movie was well done, but most particularly Heath Ledger actually did a damn good job with that character--whether or not you feel the interpretation itself was accurate, it was well-executed.)

Can I?

Avatar. I hate Avatar with a fiery passion.

I really didn't find it that pretty and I sure as shit didn't find it any smart. He had the worst, most pandering, most annoying, most obvious set of messages I've ever seen in that film. I thought I would hate it before I saw, but I had no idea.

DISCLAIMER: I have nothing against shallow entertainment. I liked The Expendables. My favorite movie is The Rock.

Avatar just pissed me off so much by pretending to be smart and edgy. It's none of that.

And it wasn't even that good-looking.
You, my friend, are going to be quoted a lot. :D
