It appears that I'm the only one in this thread who actually follows this style or atleast, sort of. As you may have read, the trend started in prisons, but I shall tell you about why the rest and I wear the pants a little lower than everybody else.
At the first glance, I thought the style was moronic, you couldn't even run properly when your pants are that low so why make the effort to pull the pants down. That's when I realized that all the girls were into "trendy" guys so in a effort to keep up with the trend I compromised and let my pants slide down a little. I could still run(but not as fast as before), but I was atleast hanging along the fashion bandwagon.
And that's what it all comes down to, guys who want to keep up with the fashion. There isn't really much to it other than that, except for the teens that do it because of the attention of the adults of course (in attention, I meant the anger and irritation that they would receive from the adults >.> not the other kind of attention).
I know for a fact that the straight guys doesn't find saggy pants sexy, but they know that girls find trendy guys sexy, just as guys find trendy girls sexy.

I'm sure the guys in your 'hood would appreciate it if you jumped aboard this trend!

Except not all straight guys like girls who find trendy guys attractive. It says something to be me about your personality if your into a fool who wears their trousers under their arse.

I'm also 23. This trend is straight up ridiculous. I see teenagers wearing their trousers like this and I can't explain why but I despise them. For me at least it makes you look like such an idiot - literally you come across as being a moronic sheep who has no independent thought.

XD I'm a straight guy my friend. And of course there are exceptions, when I say guys I mean the majority of guys, not every single one of them.

And really, I don't see any problem with peoples clothing styles, except if it involves revealing the genitalia of course.

I usually wear what most people would consider "practical" clothes, like normal jeans, and T-shirts, sometimes a dressier full button up shirt, sometimes hoodies, steel toed work shoes. But as I said, practical, you wouldn't see me with my pants falling down, they need to be on propperly to be practical, you can't run or fight worth shit if you got your pants down below your ass, or hangin off it at the midline. not to mention any kind of physical labour is pretty much impossible like that. I mean you can't even holster your gun in your waistband propperly in that style so it's not even gangsta enough for the gangstas, but then again half of the gang members or hangers on that I know, wear a more practical pant style and like muscle shirts and basketball jerseys, and stuff... hell I think it's been like 5 years since I've even seen the style you're talking about.

But then again, I'm kind of a social chameleon, I can blend in with EVERY group, so I've seen styles of all sorts evolve, but yeah, it's been awhile I thought that style died a long way back, guess I was wrong.

it started in prisons when they did not let anyone have belts. People continued it on the street because it shows they spent time. Everyone started doing it after that because it became cool. It started showing up in suburbs because it pisses off parents and its the cool thing to do.

The only real function it has is a easier time on cops caching criminals.

For me it's a question of clothing options. I'm in-between sizes, and the underwear's dimensions conflict with how the pants hang. I could pull my pants up right underneath my belly-button and cinch tight on my belt, but then I get hip bulges and I look like I have a diaper underneath.
I try not to show too much above my waistline, but then again I'm not out trying to impress anyone with my "fashion pizazz".

Dunno if it's already been said, but I think it evolved in US Prisons as a way of showing other inmates you were open to recieving anal intercourse without letting the guards know.

Dunno how true it is, but it makes me laugh when I see some dickhead in town looking like that.

Meh, I'm 25 years old - Kids today are into all sorts of crazy weird shit that just looks retarded to me - but then again, whilst I judge them for looking like retards, I'm sure I get the same thing when I wear my denim patch jacket out.

Except my denim patch jacket fucking rocks.

Apparently it was from US prison systems used as a "code" to indicate you were up for sex with other inmates - fun fact (or something)

I wear my pants however they fit, if they are mahussive, I usually get a belt or tie and have them round my waist. Some guy told me at his school if you didn't have them below the waist, you get beaten up - which sounds pretty stupid to me, but whatever.

In this topic: A bunch of people negatively judging a cultural style because it's different than what they do! Who could have predicted this would happen? Just about everybody.

As I recall, the reason that people do this is because they want to seem tough, like prisoners. When in jail, the inmates aren't allowed to have belts for obvious reasons. So, people want to seem like they are as tough as people in jail and look like them.

Pretty sure I read that somewhere.

1) People still do this? I haven't seen it in quite some time.

2) Next time you see someone doing it, why not just ask them? They'll be much more likely to give you a simple and honest answer than a bunch of fashion-dumb nerds speculating on the internet.
Oh yes, yes it does, at least in my neighborhood.
I have asked, but no one can seem to give me a dignified normal answer besides "Well.. it's cool brah! because I, like, can!"

I love these people. :3
I suppose you could love them in the same way people love that racist old guy that makes comments about migrant workers...

In any case, like chavs and "gangstas", it's part of a dumb clique that thinks it's cool. Everyone else (IE, the overwhelming majority, from hipsters to angsty teenage emos) see it and go "wow, you look like a douchebag".

It makes it easier to reach into my back pocket and pop a cap in you ass. That 2 seconds advantage could save your life!

Because they want to and it makes them happy. I'll never pretend to understand why, but then I'm sure that the fact that I love wearing suits confuses some people.
Honestly, it's not hurting anyone. It used to annoy me years ago when I was annoying but then I got over it.

While I've never really seen anyone do this, perhaps this will give you some insight into the trend:

Personally I always assumed that it was to give the illusion that the bloke in question is massively endowed. Because ultimately that's what everything comes down to. Who has the biggest penis, literal or metephorical.

I read somewhere that it's pretty much a representation of how dirt poor people from the projects can't afford pants that are the right size. I still think it's dumb that they choose to celebrate it. Lots of real people from the projects would happily wear well-fitting pants if they could afford to.
This style simply implies that they want to be poor, so congratulations to those fools who think they're being respectful to the poor.

The reason most people do it is because it goes with the 'gangsta' thing. It's a style that most of them don't know the meaning of. It originated in prison as a way to determine which of the inmates were partaking in prostitution. Those with the low shorts were basically advertising. The message got mixed up by the crowd trying to act 'cool' and thought it was a sign of being 'hardcore.' Now that you know this, sit back and laugh at the uninformed fools.
