I hate Halo's melee because if I shoot someone 50 times in the head with the Assault Rifle it does less damage than when I hit them with it. I get annoyed on CoD when people melee but then I play hardcore most of the time so it is easy to defeat.

I'd have to say Fear. The combo system and directional mêlée hits was pretty awesome. the only problem? it could dominate multi-player matches because it was both novel and felt natural.

I'm sorry but you must not be very good if myou let people get close enough to stab you. The only time I've ever been knifed was in the back, and even then you're more likely to get shot. Personally, I like halo's melee the best, but then again, it's my favorite multiplayer game. I just wish I could start with any gun I wanted.

The best melee system would be a mix between CS:S, TF2, and BF2.

Notice I said Battlefield 2, NOT Bad Company 2.

Halo, sice its quick and effective.

I didnt like the way it worked in the other games listed, always slow, awkward and sluggish to use melee.

Here is how melee should work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9kK2qUjh7s
You actually have to hit them in the head/neck area to get a one hit kill.

I like the cs style where its more of a humiliation because its hard to pull off. In mw2 its probly more humiliating to get shot.

I'd have to say Halo, cos it's integrated really well into the entire combat system. And it's pretty well balanced.

I'm presuming you're playing on the Xbox where you don't have an accurate targeting system, which means you always get an auto aim factor. On the PC it's much harder to hit somebody with a knife. Another thing is that you can pull it out that fast, but I think it's weird that he always puts the knife away after striking, he could keep it out to fight with.

Then again games can never resemble reality because there are a lot less commands than possible movements of the human body.

I think somewhere between Halo and CS would be best, so you can hit them with the butt of the rifle and it does a bit of damage, or you can change to a knife and it will do more.

It's pretty obvious melee play is dumbed-down so it doesn't exhort an unhealthy amount of thinking for the average X-Box user.
Yes, FPS games were better when they had intricate and complex melee attacks that played out like a game of chess.

Erm...

It's two guys running at each other and trying to beat/knife the shit out of each other. How complicated could you make it?

I think Portal has the best melee system for two reasons.

1. It didn't have one.
2. Portal is awesome.

I think the melee in MW 1 was perfectly fine, a last ditch attack for when you ran out of ammo or bumped into someone. But in MW2 there are FAR too many people running around with Marathon, lightweight and Commando! add a care package and it basically becomes their primary weapon! You shouldn't be able to make a class around a 'Secondary' weapon.

I find it annoying that it takes more than one sniper bullet to incapacitate, but just one instant knife-stab kills anyone...
In other news, what are some FPS games with good melee combat?
OP: Halo has the best system.

Definately Counterstrike, although I like Battlefield 2's system more. It's the same except that it IS an instant kill. I think if you can get that close it should be instant death. Otherwise there is the risk of the guy turning around WHILE BEING STABBED REPEATEDLY IN THE NECK and shooting you.

Despite Halo doing a lot of things wrong, I think the melee system from Halo 2 was the best ever implemented. It wasn't too overpowered, and it's power changed depending on situation.

Standing still? Low power, takes 3 hits to kill.
Running? Medium power, took 2 hits to kill. This spawned the BXB combo for instant kills.
Jumping? High power, took 2 hits to kill. This does slightly more damage than a running melee.

I'll agree that the knife in MW2 is ridiculous. The Commando perk is the primary reason, and not the base knife itself.

Well in Halo 3 it isnt actually about shooting it is about disabling the opponents shields so you can jump behind them and finish them with a punch. The amount of times this happens in Halo is amazing.

In MW2 I agree there should be hit boxes for the knife and someone shouldnt be able to knife me after I have unloaded half a clip of a P90 into their heads and they are still alive. Most of the time people knife you from behind though so it isnt that bad except when people have commando which gives them knifing skills that Altair doesnt even have.
