I "swear" because I don't believe in magic. Words are all arbitrary and have no inherent meaning. Listen to George Carlin's rant on Parental Advisory about racial slurs sometime. There's nothing wrong with the word in and of itself. It's the racist asshole who's using it we should be concerned with. If you're thinking the angry or hateful thought that leads most people other than yourself to swearing but using a different set of arbitrary mouth-noises to express it, you're not superior, and you're usually a little silly to boot.
We both used George Carlin examples!

"hell, *****, ass do not count"

Why is that? They are still cuss words. Is it because they are on TV, because I've heard "bullshit" on TV, and everything around midnight. And that is on cable, not digital. Plus, there is nothing bad about a word, it is the meaning and tone expressed behind it.

Dap, Broseph.

Sadly I'm one of those guys who doesn't read threads before posting. Carlin was a real philosopher of language and so many people think he was just this comedian who did funny voices in the 70s and became a cranky old man in the 90s.

The only word I won't say to my mother is ****. Does this mean I still have morals?
-It means you're afraid of the punishment, or your not 100% evil to the core.

Thats a good argument, but most people who swear dont do it for those reasons, so its rendered kinda useless except for allowing College professors to go crazy with their language.
What I mean is that people who can't bring them selves to swear usually have that particular moral value imprinted into their superego, which is fine because not-swearing doesn't hurt anybody (unlike a similar superego related phenomenon known better as homophobia). Of course, nor is there any real point to intentionally avoid using certian words (with the exception of derogatory remarks or insults, which are words that really do hurt people) other then trying not to offend any other person who might be offended. Which, because you claim to be personally desensitized to swearing from other parties, I would assume that you avoide swearing not for reasons of your own superego, but because you are sensitive to other peoples' superegos. Which is a good quality, by the way. It means that you are both a free thinker (in the sense that you have some control over your superego) and that you are a kind , empathetic person/ non confrontational. Perhaps I should have mentioned this in my earlier post.
Also I am pretty non-confrontational and try to have a neutral at worst relationship with people, so I really wouldn't get a chance to use it.
Also, just like walking down the street with a rifle on your back in an open carry state can cause problems, swearing to people who dont know this interesting backstory and will only judge you based on what they know can cause problems too.
You are absolutely right. I chose yes to the original poll, simply because I do swear; in my peer group, anyway. Around normal people I save it for sentence enhancers, as a form of punctuation, and I only use them if I am sure no body will be offended (and as long as there are no kids around, parent's don't usually like that XD). I feel that words such as
shit, fuck, dick, etc.
to be particularly useful for getting the point across.

Anyway, while my argument may in fact be largely pointless 9the same way explaining gaming to your grandparents might be) I mostly posted it for selfish reasons; I enjoy thinking about this sort of thing and then sharing my theories with anybody who will listen.

I posted mine after yours, don't worry. I post then read through to see if anyone has ninja'd me.

George Carlin was a great political and philosophical mind. People just didn't respect him because they couldn't get past his use of the "fuck" word.

I've only swore once but only because I was particularly ticked off, ever since then, even if I'm angry I can't swear

swearing is more powerful when you don't use it often. If you never swear, and then suddenly drop the F-word for emphasis, people will listen.

Im freakin 19 years old and I still say heck, crap and such. If someone ask's me what another person said, I automatically modify the swear words if there were any.

SNIP

Anyone else like this or know someone like this, or am I the only one on the internet?
I don't swear. I think it's pointless, really.
So, nope! You aren't the only one! We should start a club of non-swearing people!
The Association to Stop Swearing!
(Kudos to those who get the pun)

I swear quite a bit, it isn't that bad, they're just words, and anyone who gets offended by them should be *********************************** with an osprey

I do for emphasizing reasons, where other means have failed.
Or for fun, or when angry, or when having fun because I am angry.

They're just words, they only have meaning because society gave them meaning.

Case in point, yes, I do. They're a simple and blunt way to get my point across.
Yeah, words they are:p. But I don't want people swearing at me all the time anyhow^^

Personally, I can't stop swearing even if I want to... It's part of my cultural heritage (being from Bergen)to swear a lot, we just can't help it... It's even worse up north tho (I love north-Norwegians and their insane swearing!). I'm sure other nations tend to put 5 or more swears into a sentence if they are pissed tho, and not just us ;).

I like to think of them as modifiers with exclamation points built in. Realistically, they're just words, they're only "obscene" because people choose to make them obscene. I am an adult and I choose to use them to express frustration or tell jokes. There's nothing weird or wrong about not using them, though.

I never really saw the point of swearing. I very rarely ever swear unless I'm quoting someone else, and even then, I only use the actual words when I'm not around family or other people who I answer to. I just can't bring myself to do it around family. I've always felt that there are better ways to make a point than using foul language. I also don't understand those people who use it just to make themselves sound cool. They need to grow up.

My point is, I don't have a problem if you swear, but I've never seen it as being necessary.
