Poll: Anyone here sick of seeing Russians as bad guys in every movie/videogame/novel?

Eh, doesn't bother me a whole lot but I think it would be nice to have a different nationality. Like maybe the British. Those scheming, conniving, scone-eating little bastards. Or the Canadians. Because the Mounties are actually really, really scary. Or maybe India or China. Or hell, even fucking North Korea. I don't know why there aren't a lot of/really any games where North Korea is the enemy, because like one or maybe two countries on earth don't hate them. But I grant one of those is, um, China.

OOH OOH OR AUSTRALIA. But like, they've manufactured a shitload of huge, more-venomous-than-already snakes and spiders that they unleash all over the world and you have to kill them all.

In one of the Call of Duty games didn't you play as a heroic Russian soldier fighting Germans? I guess the only people in the world more evil than Russians are Germans. So, if Russians want to be seen as good guys again I recommend an immediate invasion of Germany. Go for it guys, they've gone all soft and hippy in the last twenty years so you should be able to march through in a month.

I would never go so far as to call Russia 'evil'. The only thing they had against themselves was a political system that couldn't go a few years without revolutions and a major asshole in power that ordered immediate executions to all men who fled during wartime. The Cold War was due to the U.S. and USSR being massive nuclear powers who could destroy each other with the push of a button. They were never 'evil' in the sense that the Nazis were evil, just really, really unlucky.

Been replaying Starcraft and Brood War and it actually made quite an impression on me how many Terran characters have heavy Russian accents in mission briefings. Also, they all kick ass. Like, if you hear a Russian accent in Starcraft, you preemptively know that this guy is a high ranking officer and kicks ass.

I literally couldn't care less. If anything I am more sick of WW2 games. That was 70 bloody years ago.

Amen to that... That's why FPS games have moved to modern day conflicts.

And then people will get tired of that eventually and would want to have FPS's like Timesplitter and Duke Nukem and then people will get bored of that too and want realistic shooters.

OT: Kinda, but I don't feel as if it's in everything. I'm still thankful that we're pulling out of the WW2 phase for FPSs.

The thing is, if you want it to be believable-ish then you're limited to a few countries. Most countries aren't really that hostile, whereas the likes of America, Russia, Germany, Afghanistan, etc. maintain that image (rightly or wrongly).

You couldn't have a game where you're defending Switzerland from an Australian invasion and try to sell it seriously.

As for District 9, there are plenty of black guys in the military force bit and the gang he goes to buy weapons off are black and try to eat his arm. AND the protagonist is white anyway.

You seem to have a rather narrow view. Given that the majority of roles are occupied by white actors it makes sense that there's more chance they're going to occupy the role of the villain, protagonist and plenty in between.

I think it might have something to do with the way their accent sounds.
For whatever reason, people here seem to associate Russian or German accents with evil mad scientists.

It has been forever since we Germans were the enemy, get over it already. =)

Don't see that many movies with Germany being the bad guy, but who cares about russians, right?

Well in alot of those things it's not "Russia at large" that's the bad guy but some splinter faction or terrorist cell that has a chip on it's shoulder from the cold war, but yeah I see your point. To that end I prefer settings that are not Earth, or when it is on earth I like for my enemy to be a product of thier motives, and not thier nationality.

Kind of like the Iron man movies, yeah part of the story is about some middle eastern terrorist group. But the real enemy is the greedy puppeteers for whom the death and destruction of war is buisness and nothing more, no love for "king and country" exist.

YES, why can't the Bad guys be someone we expect to be the good guys for once? like playing a Delta force member to discover after fighting heroicly discovered the American goverment pulled the strings, that would be an intresting twist.

I want to see a game where USA and Russia team up to kick China's ass, then go into space. Where they begin to fight an empire of Evil Space Elves with the help of bug-aliens, space squids, and such.

Remember in modern warfare 2 where you shot a bunch of citizens in that air port? Well they were Russian citizens so that makes it OK,(just kidding ) I couldn't just shoot my team that did the terrorist act during planning because that ruins plot and WE NEED A AWESOME WAR AND RUSSIA IS A GOOD CHALLENGE! What I'm really sick of is watching movies where everyone in their (non-English speaking) home countries speaks English with a bad attempt at the accent of the native population. Is it really that hard to throw in some fucking subtitles?
