I'm Russian and tired of it since the 80s. The end of 90s was nice, but the 2Ks seem like Cold War over and over...

Eh i have always liked the America vs Russia thing so i'm not complaining.

The Cold War may be over but the Russians still spy on us, they still have way more nuclear weapons than we do and their military is still one of the strongest in the world. In fact the Russian Spetsnaz them most well trained special task force in the world.

If things deteriorate in the world like they often do in these stories i don't think Russia would be on our side and they would take any chance they could to end American dominance.

However i think i more realistic modern enemy for today would be China.

Personally, I feel like video games are becoming a new vehicle for propaganda. I'm pretty sure it's not being ordered up by the government or anything, but it reinforces older propaganda that was. World War II was, in many ways, seen as such a "good war" because there was a very successful propaganda campaign waged to get everyone behind it. It made us feel like we were the good guys, and like everyone over hear was united and pulling for our boys over there! But don't forget that until Pearl Harbor people in this country wanted nothing to do with the war, and there were quite a few people who thought we should ally with the Nazis!

And as far as the Russians go, we had about 55 years of Cold War propaganda conditioning to regard the Russians as insidious and evil. But don't forget that many of the tactics they used on the rest of the world the US used as well, and still continues to practice to this day--covert overthrows of democratically-elected governments, debt enslavement of developing countries, rapacious plundering of natural resources, torture, etc. But despite this, Americans viewed themselves as the proud defenders of liberty, while the Soviets were the godless oppressors (at least until the late 60s). That attitude did not come about by accident or by chance. It was cultivated.

And finally today, we are subject to propaganda about the terrorists. Do you remember what kind of crap filled the airwaves during the mid 2000's? We were basically made to think that unless we kill kill killed the terrorists were going to storm this country and make us all their slaves. Nevermind the fact that there are probably less than 10,000 members of Al-Qaeda worldwide (Wikipedia says that in 2001 there were 500-1000 members, but I imagine their membership has swelled since then), and that compared to the destruction that has been wrought pursuing them their crimes really don't seem that severe--the US has killed more civilians by accident than have been killed by terrorists since the 70's. I sincerely believe that terrorism will be the new Cold War, despite how ludicrous that is. I think the US government has forgotten how to operate without being able to break laws in the name of national security.

So think about this next time you play a shooter and are yelling 'Die! Die' at the screen. Don't let yourself be manipulated. The scary thing about video games is that they are a PERFECT vehicle for a 1984-like 2 Minutes Hate--you spend hours running around killing the enemies of your country.

So yes, I am indeed sick of seeing Russians as the bad guys all the time (especially considering that I am largely Russian in my ancestry). I personally would love to play a game where you play as a starving, under-equipped terrorist who has lost his entire family to a US bombing mishap and is now fighting to try to drive the super-advanced tanks, planes, and troops out of his homeland. You could even base the character off of a real person--I'm sure there are thousands of people who fit that description. He could be honorable and really a decent person--the idea that you can be a good person and oppose the US is a message that I would love to see broadcasted to the world.

Amazingly, even despite being Russian myself, i don't mind it ALL that much. It's annoying, sure, but not too awful. There might be two reasons:

A) I actually see OUR nationalism, and it's even worse than Americans', and
B) Russian enemies are associated with Soviet Union most of the time, and i hate USSR with a passion.

I want to see a game where USA and Russia team up to kick China's ass, then go into space. Where they begin to fight an empire of Evil Space Elves with the help of bug-aliens, space squids, and such.
That is one of the most metal ideas I've ever heard. I'm genuinely shocked that South Park hasn't picked up on the idea and run with it. Their whole take on our foreign policy is that yes, we're bastards, but with good intentions, and to some degree or other I could actually see that as the defining characteristic of any industrialized nation with foreign holdings. Having Russia and America look to one another and go "eh!" in a very Fonzy-ish way toward one another makes good sense in that regard as we should be able to recognize one another's M.O.'s at this point.

I just figured the top baddies in video games
1.) Russians
2.) Germans (once number 1, but people got sick of shooting Germans screaming "Amerikaner!"
3.) Middle Eastern terrorists
4.) Americans (usually PMC's)
5.) Multinational Mercenary force or some soldiers from a fictional country
close but no cigar, it's more along the lines of a divine trinity of baddies.

you got the Vodka swilling Russians,
the goosestepping Germans,
and the tea drinking English.

you keep an eye out and you'll notice these are the most popular villain types in
Thriller/War/Disney films and games

I honestly don't care who I'm destroying. As long as video games give me a target and a means to destroy obliterate it, I don't care where it's from, what its gender is, or how old it is. If they want it dead, it's dead.

Well who else can Americans pick on?

Iraq?

Maybe in 10 more years when they can be sure people will forget who the pricks were and are stupid enough to believe it, then the next Modern Warfare will have Iraq depicted as a resource hogging ***** smuggling, stealing and selling 10.000$ a gallon and then kidnapping baby humans, dolphins and puppies to grind into genetic paste that somehow can work as gas.

I know Russia and the US are still not that close, but come on, I'm sick of seeing Russians as bad guys in almost every spy thriller that's out and I'm even sicker of killing millions of them in FPS and RTS games. Dude the cold war has been over for about 2 decades now
Go play red orchestra, or the OLD cod games. You get to play as the russians in those. That was what made cod stand out as an fps back in the day.

Now you fight the russians in cod, funny eh?

Why not have the Americans as the bad guys? They were as much dicks, perhaps even more than the Soviets.

Pocahontas, Hunchback of notredame 2 (don't ask me how i saw that), Uncharted 1.

Either they have an English accent or are of English origin.

It's just an easy target for hollywood types who can't fake one of the other two accents.

It's basically the Russians or Germans. If you have any other culture, then I'm sure some idiots would be like,"WELL THAT THAR IS RACIST!" See: Resident Evil 5 fiasco.

And basically any other European group just doesn't seem "scary."

Edit: To the above: Seriously? No. Englishmen are NEVER the target in spy/action movies/games, they're only used when it's like, trying to do white guilt or something. You'll find way more Germans, Russians, and now that I think about it, yeah, Middle-Eastern terrorists.

Yeah you can play games as Russians but they are usually set in World War II and if they are set in the modern period they are usually against fellow Russians. In some games where Russians are shown as the good guys, they are shown as being incompetent and unable to fight for themselves like Call of Duty 4, where the Russians need the help of the SAS and Marines to defeat the terrorists and in Splinter Cell Conviction Coop where they need the help of Third Echelon.

There are games with North Koreans now like the game Homefront coming up, but personally I think the people who wrote the story are a bunch of idiots, come on North Korea conquering Asia and the US? That's just stupid. I bet if there will be a war between North and South Korea the South will win even without the help of the US. They got modern equipment, well trained and supplied soldiers. What does the North have? A bunch of cold war tech military equipment and poorly educated and fed soldiers.

Every game needs an antagonist and protagonist. All games are works of fiction, even the ones that are period specific. One day people will start making games about the American invasions of Iraq and Afganistan - but do you really think that would sell? Since games are designed to make money as their ultimate objective, the answer to the question is most likely not. You can't say no because if people buy used socks on Ebay...
