I own both (Piper, a dachshund puppy, Abby and Lexi 2 Burmese cats).
When I went to basic training, and was gone for 7 weeks, she walked around the house meowing non-stop.
This made me go "D:".
So I'm a cat person. Meow.

Cats!!!

Yes, cats are more independant. But if a cat stays away for days, then the owner doesn't know how to raise cats. This is the result of owners who let their 8-12 weeks old kittens out in the neighborhood. They need a long time to know that home is the absolute safe spot. When you let them out when they are too young, they will consider your home only a little more safe then the street or the house next door. Sometimes i see cats in the street in summer, where i know they aren't even a year old. To those cats the entire neighborhood is their safe ground.

I actually like a pet that can take care of him or herself, and i don't need my pets to be 'productive'. A slave is not a best friend, just someone who never says 'no' and obeys your commands. Obedience is not friendship.

Dogs will defend you to the death.. they will follow you around, you can bring them places, go swimming with them.

They can be police, military, drug dogs.

Cats sit around and whine.

I do have a dog, but I've never cared for them. IMHO they're smelly and loud. Cats are only smelly in winter when they can't go outside, so they poop on the floor.

But anyway, I'm a cat person.
Why do you have a dog if you don't care about them? That sounds mighty irresponsible.

I'm definitely a dog person. Not even the best smelling cat could ever beat the companionship provided by a loyal friendly dog.
My mother likes dogs. She takes care of it and I take care of the cats.

I love dogs to death. I really do, they're truly man's best friend. I think it's because I grew up with a dog (yellow lab) who died when I was 16 and it was the saddest day of my life. I can't live without having a dog. They love you unconditionally, they play and learn and obey. They reciprocate. Cats do none of that, or at least not to the extent that dogs do. I like cats but I really love dogs. My dog rocks
When I finish university and get my own place I'm going to get a dog (lab or beagle) and call him Chief Galen Tyrol (my favourite character from Battlestar), Chief for short

Well, I'm more of a dog person than a cat person, but I do love cats, as long as they're inside-outside cats. Any cat that is kept strictly inside turns into a spoiled little monster.
Then again, that pretty much applies to dogs, too...

Hmm... both I think. Dogs are cooler but a bit too needy. Cats are cute and I understand their body language but some of them are so self-centered.

edit: Someone needs to create a cog, cag, dot or dat... whatever a dog/cat hybrid would be called.

I chose both, but I really love just about every animal. As long as it isn't an Insect/Crustacean/Arachnid/Centipede/Millipede.

I love cats so much. My parents went on holiday a few weeks ago so I had their 2 kittens round mine to stay for a week - I wish I could've kept them so bad ^^

On the flip side I've never really had a soft spot for dogs, especially big ones that jump on me.

Good luck with that... Not all dogs are a fighting machine.

they will follow you around, you can bring them places, go swimming with them.
I have enough of those from my own species, i don't need a dog to be entertained like that.

Also, a boyfriend doesn't HAVE be taken out for a walk twice a day, and i also don't have to watch him take a dump. At least cats can take a dump in private.

They can be police, military, drug dogs.
Humans have their own police and military, using animals for our own protection is just lazy. I'll give you drug dogs because their nose is better then ours.
