I would tell them "I am Canadian, eh?"
If that does not satisfy them then I will quickly apologize, then offer them a complimentary bottle of Maple Syrup.

I'm from Northern Ireland, but I call myself Irish rather than British, due to my families status.
Britain=Scotland, Wales, England.

UK=Britain+Northern Ireland

Ireland=Northern Ireland+Ireland.

So technically, you're not British :p You are a UK Citizen though.
Wow...you actually went there. Do you have any idea the hassle you can cause saying stuff like that in Northern Ireland? Also, note that NI is one of the few countries where you can pick - we can have either a BRITISH passport, an Irish passport or both. So don't tell someone what they "technically" aren't, because technically you'll find yourself looking an utter eijit.

op, I call myself British while living in NI, and I don't mind being referred to as Irish but I would correct someone who labelled be English.
Sigh. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain]
Yes, because after 4 years learning UK politics I had /no/ idea about the definition of Great Britain. My point still stands and you're a douche that pressumes wikipedia will cover your ass - the same site that at one point said, Joan of Arc died in 1966.
I'm the douche? You're the one being rude, chum.

I've got Dictionary.com [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/great+britain] and Merriam-Webster [http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/great%20britain] if you'd prefer.

I'm a Canadian-born Scotsman. Damned proud of of it too.
I'm an American-born Scotsman/Canadian/Irish/British/Russian

But since technically your nationality is wherever you're born, I am just an American with European heritage, and you're just a Canadian with Scottish heritage.
That's true. Yes I may be Canadian, but my hearts in Scotland. In a few years I hope to move to Scotland. I've visited a few times, just love it there.

I always have and do refer to myself as British. However the exception to this was when I was in Germany recently and everyone was asking if I was English, so I just said yes. (I don't even know how to say British in German anyway...)

So i definately call myself British in Britain, but in other countries i might refer to myself as English so they know better where i am from.
Also for this reason

I would rather be British instead of Scottish because I'm a tree-hugging hippie pacifist who wants the world to get along. If there was option for 'European' up there I'd rather pick it than any of the others.

I really dislike setting up boundaries between other people. It doesn't really help us help each other.

For the cynics out there, I'm being totally honest. Well, actually, I don't actively hug trees if you must know. But nothing else was a lie.

Out of interest, where exactly did you visit?

Scottish - we don't really like being associated as British
That doesn't make much sense seeing as Scotland is part of the British Isles

On topic I refer to myself as a European but if pushed I'd say British
True but a fair ammount of people in Scotland want to be classed as an independent nation (since our government descisions etc get passed by an english queen etc). I don't know a single person from Scotland who ever says they are British. If someone asks if they're British they always say "no, Scottish"

I'm English. Although I now lots of people like to identify as British/Scottish/Irish etc, I prefer to classify as England, the united nation, not divided by such boundaries.

I don't really count myself as being 'English' even though I live in England, I'm a Geordie, we sound more like Scots than Englishmen anyway.

British is what people who've never bothered to learn geography use to refer to people who are Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English and occasionally Australians (I told you they'd never bothered learning georgraphy).
Well that's just wrong and those people are stupid as if you're Irish you can't be British unless you emigrate to England, Scotland or Wales if your in Northern Ireland you can be a UK citizen or whawtever then.

Filthy immigrant myself, I prefer calling you "English", just like I would use "Scottish" in Scotland(I live in England).

EDIT: Actually I think I'm British now, as legal resident and student here.

It's fair enough if you fellas choose not to be associated with England to closely I suppose, we haven't always been the most pleasant chaps to our neighbouring countries...
but I really don't think that the SNP have a leg to stand on we're much stronger as a union than as separate countries in pretty much every respect.

I say I'm English, because I can't stand Scottish, Irish and Welsh culture being slabbed together with ours because we're all so different. It's pretty much the same as calling Americans and Canadians the same.

I am English, not British. That is just some shit the government made up to feel important. Ever notice that we are not called Great Britain anymore? I wish I could say I am Great. lolololololol
