KoRn. Slipknot and Disturbed second and third respectively.
I wouldn't necessarily call any of those bands metal.

Anyway, guess it's 'Tallica for me, they got me into metal music in the first place and although I like Megadeth more right now, they're probably my all-time favorites.
Oh the irony. Why those three are indeed metal, nu metal in fact, Metallica is not. It is hard rock. You fail =]

Actually, Metallica is a metal band, although it has drifted into hard rock territory before (I think during the Load and Reload era, but thankfully I avoided those two). The band is complete garbage and really has been since Dave Mustaine left, but they are still undeniably metal.

Yyyyeeeaaah, no. 'Tallica has made a bunch of hard rock songs, but they're easily classified as metal.

Also, Metallica, Maiden, Slayer.

Yeah, Bolt Thrower really deserve more praise and popularity than they get. Quite possibly the most consistent band ever in metal, both in quality and in style, and they are one of the few bands that I have heard are able to capture a real "feel" of war.

It never ceases to amaze me how elitist some metal fans can be.

Anyway, Metallica, ignoring the Load > St Anger wasteland of horrible ear-rape of course.

I know what you mean. I've searched quite a lot and the only other band to come close is Hail Of Bullets. Great stuff, only the one album as far as I know though, they're quite new. Some kind of dutch supergroup. Only problem is the vocals take a bit of getting used to. Did for me anyway. Check this out : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SPvJFqASEM

I would like to take this opportunity and say that In Flames is PUNK. Not Metal, as the genre name metalcore would lead you to believe. the -core makes it punk.

I agree, but there is a difference between elitism and pompous jerkassery. Generally the metal fans I run into who have high and selective opinions of things have those opinions for very, very good and defensible reasons. They see bad music as a threat, and rightly so. Taken a look at Roadrunner Records, or even Nuclear Blast or Century Media lately? Urgh.

You have no idea what you're talking about. In Flames is a metal band and one of the pioneers of the melodic death metal/Gothenburg sound. They've lately strayed into nu metal and metalcore to some degree but they have very little if anything to do with punk. Please educate yourself before speaking.

On a more positive note: I really think you all need some Slough Feg. And I mean right now.

Why so hostile? I never said I didn't like those bands (except Slipknot, but that's beside the point), and Disturbed is in fact one of my favorite bands. It's just that I wouldn't call them metal. More like alternative or something.
And if you wanna get into that whole subgenre-category-labeling bullcrap, Metallica is not hard rock. Some songs on Load and Reload were, but if you can listen to Kill 'em all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets or And Justice for all and tell me, with a straight face, that those are hard rock albums, then I'm gonna have to wonder why I'm even arguing. There's a reason why Metallica is one of the Big Four of Thrash Metal, and that's because they are/were a thrash(/speed/heavy) metal band. So I guess "you fail =]."

Jesus, that picture sums up metal better than any I have ever seen! Awesome.

That's cool about Armageddon bound, I have loved that song for about 12 years now and never get bored of it.

Hail of Bullets is great. I got their album a few months ago. The vocalist is well-known for being in Asphyx and Pestilence as well. They definitely have a similar feel as far as atmosphere goes, but I think Bolt Thrower do a better job in some ways... Bolt Thrower, especially on Those Once Loyal, has a sort of constant forward motion that reminds me of ever-advancing waves of men and iron, and the absolutely monstrous, grinding bass sound combined with the engine-oil vocals can't help but make me think "war machine".

This is just stupid. Youtube-comment stupid even.

That said, I've been a fan of Doom for a long time, so it would probably have to be Saint Vitus for me. Although recently I'm really liking Krux a lot.

I'd like to take this moment to pimp my own work. I recently (as in, yesterday) completed a song in the vein of a lot of old-school death metal - there's a lot of Swedish influence in there, but at the same time definitely some from thrash, and even some Celtic Frost. The drums are programmed (and could be better, but I have limited samples and patience), and the guitars are going direct in, and the vocals were recorded with a pair of headphones as a microphone, but... well, I still think it sounds alright.
