i keep meaning to get around to it. i think giving blood and organs is important to keeping others alive, but that doesnt necesarily mean i think people should, its personal preference really. its a very touchy subject from what i understand, people think it violates their privacy to have organs given to others after they kick the bucket
As if lying naked on a slab and having Morticians go over your body was an invasion of privacy enough, right?

While I understand the preservation of a corpse for the sake of friends and family so as not to upset them, I find it a little disturbing that the dead are given such rights that prevent their organs and bodily fluids automatically becoming forfeit when they die. When you think about it, would there not be less need for voluntary or still living donors if every deceased person was treated that way? Drained on any useful blood, harvested of viable organs before such become useless.

I know it's a rather morbid notion, but I'm not saying doctors should simply hack the body to bits, keep things respectful like, but still make as much use of the body before preparing it for burial or cremation.

Why can't they just have it as standard to take you're organs when you die and if you want to be a selfish bastard and keep they you have to get off you're arse and fill out the paperwork.
I agree with this completely, the system should be automatically opt-in, with -you- having to take the necessary steps to opt out should you so choose.

I'm not an organ or blood donor, but that's because I'm not sure if I can. Does anyone out there know if diabetics can give blood or donate organs in the UK?

im requested that i be an organ donor incase of death resulting from a car accident, ive given blood once, and i didnt have the best experience. The person couldnt get the blood to flow out properly, so i didnt end up giving a whole donation worth, and i had a huge bruse shappend like the nurse's hand for 3weeks. Im willing to go back again someday tho, as for Marrow, idk that seems way to painful, like idk if its the same process as bone marrow biopsy(sp?) and i have heard those are incredbly painful.

There are two types.

One is where a hollow needle is inserted into your pelvic region (i.e. your hip) and the marrow is removed from you hip bone. That is usually done under general aesthetic and a hospital trip (probably not an over night stay).

The second is really, really simple. You get hooked up to a blood filter, which takes your blood from one arm, filters out the stem cells and puts the rest of the blood back into the other arm. This is an outpatient thing, no aesthetic and you rejuvenate the lost cells in days.

However, being called up to be a marrow donor is very rare. You can spend a whole lifetime on the register and never be needed but it?s just good to be there for someone if you are a match.

Organ donation is important to me b/c my father is a 2 time kidney recipient and is in need of a liver and kidney now. He is back on dialysis for the third time, but we don't think he will get a transplant due to his age and his previous transplants. If youare not an organ donor, in my opinion, you are selfish b/c what are you going to do with your organs when you're dead? I get pretty fired up about this. My wife has had to remove me from more than a few conversations about the issue.

90% of people are in favour of donation and only 4% actaully have a card (UK statistics).

I'd donate blood if the government would let me. Apparently they've got tons though, so they can afford to be really discriminating about it. It's chill.

I intend to give blood, but I don't get much free time. When I have enough time to spare, I will make my way down to the nearest clinic.

As far as organs are concerned, the instant my body stops living, they officially belong to whoever gets them first.

I think if things were THAT bad they would maybe rethink some of their criteria for allowing people to donate, don't you? Maybe get rid of that whole thing where if me (an STD free zone) and my partner (an STD free zone) screw, that doesn't actually make us rabid carriers of STD's? I mean, we were both virgins before each other, and we've been together for four years now, but neither of us are allowed to donate.

Doesn't that make it sound like the NHS has tons of blood to you?

Yep, there it is right there. Am I a man and have I ever had teh bumsex with another man.

I'm not, and I have not, but according to the NHS I am (because I'm a trans women, and we're not really women, just great big pretenders) but that puts me out right away. Forever. Despite the fact that there is no route we COULD have got an STD from, neither of us ever having had sex before that time. Apparently there's like a 90% chance that STDs will spontaneously form if you have the icky gay sex. SO ICKY.

I'm all for it - after I'm dead. I guess I'm abit squemish about giving up anything while I'm alive (I had to have a lot of blood samples taken a couple years ago for medical reasons and it was not fun). But after I'm dead, sure, harvest me up. Its a good way to save lives after I'm gone.

It's only the outside that counts ;3
No jokes.
All the major religions accept donation other than those which believe in reincarnation where all the eternal organs (eyes, skin etc.) are needed :3

Oh ffs. ¬_¬

That is just...NUGH! Words fail me. That, like I said, is an outrage.
Condolences...but organs are still ok, right?

people can have my flesh after I am dead because fuck needles. I really can't stand needles being inside me. Just going in for a regular shot makes me go into a partial homicidal rage.

Think about it this way - donate your organs after you die and you technically cheat death as parts of you live on in another body.
