Quick disclaimer, I do in fact know if the Call of Cthulhu RPG.

Now that I got that out of the way, onto the concept.

After a friend of mine mistoke "Call of Duty" for "Call of Cthulhu", I got to thinking, imagine in the next call of duty game had your fighting Cthulhu (or some similar monstrosity) and its minions, rather than the usual baddies. Combining realistic gunplay with in a truly end times scenario, pitting the armies of the world against against evil monstrosities that are the size of small buildings.

Alternatively, this could be a game set in the Cloverfield world, or a War of the Worlds scenario.

EDIT: THE POINT OF THIS GAME WOULD NOT BE DEFEATING CTHULHU. The entire point would be an utterly futile resistance against Cthulhu and its kin as they destroy the entire world.

EDIT 2: The setting of the game would pretty much be a war that would make the Grey Knights piss themselves in fear.
I think they already did that and called it Metro 2033.

Well given that in the original story of Call of Cthulhu, Cthulhu was beaten by having a boat rammed into his head... why not? Plus it would be an interesting change of pace for the CoD series.

In Dark Corners of the Earth, you never actually saw/faced Cthulhu in person, only representations of him. I think that played a part in making the game more frightening

*nods* So, would you be on board for something like Battlefield: Apocalypse?
Are you kidding? Of course, I would. In our D&D group, I'm running an end of the world campaign for the setting I've been creating over the last eight years. Every single one of my players know that there's no way they can stop the the end from coming. You get some really interesting things out of people when they know they're doomed. Presented right, it would be awesome.
Indeed it would!

As well, for all the Post Apocalyptic games out there, there are nect to none set in the actual apocalypse!

I think the idea, or similar ones are great! However the ending would be a little anti-climatic, seeing as it'll all be over when the big guy wakes up.
The whole point is that the human race WILL die, and you're just trying to prolong it a bit.
Whoops missed that! Anyway, that would be a great plot element, having a Lovcraftian notion of futility, overshadowing your actions and objectives. In that regard however I don't think the whole "Oohrah!" "Give Em Hell!" attitude that 99% of COD's characters seem to posses would contradict the overall theme of how your waiting for the inevitable.

Perhaps a better template is needed than COD :)
Actually, I think that would add to it, showing how short sighted the humans are and how they think they can actually win would be ironic

Tell me if this would inspire horror.

You and your small squad of soldiers is hiding from a massive monstrosity that makes an aircraft carrier look like an ant, when a platoon tries to run to your location, is spotted and is eaten by the giant creature in the blink of an eye.

No. Not even cause I like the realism (which really I dont, i just like a good shooter), just no. The entire idea ot me sounds entirely stupid and would cease to be a CoD game. I mean, we're talking about different dimensional hellions that are invading the world, with no conceivable way of beating them and you're telling us that we cant even win. That basically means I'm paying 60+ bucks (money Towards the CoD name, and money for Cthulu, cause I dont think she's public domain), for the last five minutes of Halo Reach being stretched out over a few hours.

So just no. It doesnt sound like a good video game in concept, at all. To me at least, and in my opinion.

If it were decently written, with action against a completely unstoppable force, then yeah I'd consider it. The problem is, games of that sort generally aren't well written. Or if they were, I don't think they'd be that engaging. So if it were made, it'd have to pull off quite a balancing act to make it a decent watch.

i think its a great idea for a game and the deperation of trying to hold of a giant ustopable enemy so different from anything you have ever come into contact with before were the only thing u can try to do is to skow it down so others survive would be very cool

I have been waiting a long time for something featuring Cthulhu.
The only possible way a CoD style Cthulhu game would work for me was if it was relentlessly bleak. Were talking about apocolypse seen through a mythos filter, humanity would have no chance.
Though I cant ever see it getting made.

Sounds interesting.

And then you can make the multiplayer weirder: A war between the various creatures where you play as them (yes this is meant to be silly). Cue complaining that Nyarlathotep is broken/a legitimate strategy, or something to that effect.

How about you start the game like CoD, just fighting soldiers...
but then some of your own allies start going crazy slowly, losing their grip on reality,
killing themselves in strange ways...
then we go through some of the Cthulu Mythos by fighting out way up the ranks.
The point wouldn't be to beat the enemy as much as witness they're raw undefeateble power.
You would be able to kill the weaker of them, with difficulty of course...
but then it would turn more into a game of desperation, trying fervently not to be seen by the monsters, running and hiding, slowly realizing that no matter where you go, they will find you.
Then the end of the game is you seeing Cthulu, trying to kill him emptying your clip, knowing it will doing nothing, tears streaming down your face as you go insane, then a lower class monster hits you and goes after another person, and you lay on a distant hill (great view) almost dying.
Then while slowly bleeding out, you see the armies of the world dying at Cthulus hand as jets kamikazi themselves uselessly at him and missiles are erased from existence with a thought, (cutscene here btw after you got hurt), until he simply destroys them all, in x way. (ending is hard to think up, any ideas)

Hows that for a game? Thoughts?

We already have a great full Cthulhu themed game (Dark Corners of the Earth) which I picked up in the steam sale.
HOWEVER, it would make a brilliant extra gamemode/mod/DLC where you hold out on an island for about 20 minutes until rescue arrives, and then goes to a cutscene where youu're flying away, and as you look at the island, the sea shifts, and Cthulhu rises quickly, and you only see him for about a half second before the screen fades to black. That would make me want COD.

Fuck yeah, I'd play it.

There's not enough Mythos goodness out there these days. The closest thing, apparently is Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but I can't play that because my PC sucks. The only actually Lovecraft related game I've every played is the 2004 'CoC: DCotE' game on the Xbox.

It wouldn't really work though. Other people have siad it, what with Cthulhu being virtually indestructable and whatnot.
You could fight Mi-Go, Deep Ones, Elder Things and maybe fend off a Shoggoth, but once the big bads come out, you're fucked.
Also, a game where you lose the battle, go insane and/or die probably wouldn't go down to well. It'd all be pointless.
As a Lovecraft fan, I see your point, it's just it's really hard to adapt his stuff well becuase in the end, you lose no matter what becuase the monsters are unstoppable.

A perfect adaptation of the Call of Cthulhu RPG would be difficult for a first person shooter. How many 13 year olds will want to play "sneak into the library and read things I shouldn't" ?

First of all you need a different title. Call of Cthulu HAS been used in a game subtitled dark corners of the earth. It was a good game look it up.
Secondly it would be controlled by activision. They would completely miss the point and I promise you the game would be even more shameless then black ops (curse you Treyarch!!!!!!).
thirdly and finally "Make the Grey knights piss themselves with fear"!?!? Do you know anything about 40k? Trust me when I say that Cthulu would be another day at the office for them. Assuming of course your referring to the same Grey knights I am of course.
