Spawn camping is the only kind of camping I don't think is fair, as it is manipulation of the spawn system in a particular game to get you free kills.

Otherwise, camping is fine. The way I see it, you can camp, Run 'n' gun, or do something in between (sneak around, I guess you could call it). A good play strategy mixes all 3. If you run and gun all the time, you're an idiot. You'll be running straight into fire many times, and will probably die a lot.

Similarly, camping puts you in one spot, and while that might get you a kill or two, you're a sitting duck once people realize "Hey, there's a guy standing in that dark corner".

The stealth gameplay is a good mix, but you can't rely on it either. Essentially, it's hiding. Avoiding the enemy. That might save your life once or twice, but you're not going to get any kills with it.

The trick is knowing when to use each strategy. If the next room is filled with enemies and their big guns, you might want to hang around just outside the entrance to that room and wait for them to exit. If it's just one guy, running in will be far more productive. If all the guys file out of the room from different directions, your best bet might be to find a convenient shadow to hide in until you can get a kill without being mauled by the rest of the opposing team.

Usually, camping can be re-termed as defending, ie: in a game of Capture the Flag, if you're just chilling at your team's flag killing anyone who gets near, that's not camping, its called playing defense.

People who call out campers for being noobs just aren't good at the game. There is no such thing as a perfect camping spot, (at least not in the games I play.) there is always some spot where you can out flank a camper, or try and out snipe them, or get in range to throw a cooked frag at them, or just stop going to the area where the camper is.

Basically, camping is legit as far as strategies go, but I still find the most satisfying things to do in an online game is killing "campers" who think they're safe. you're NEVER safe

One more thing: Camping is a very effective tactic when dealing with other snipers/campers.
If you already have the lead, sure. One thing that I don't think people understand is this: if everyone on both teams camped, no one would ever get any kills whatsoever. The game would end in a 0-0 draw every single time. It's the rushers (AKA "people with balls") that progress the game, not the campers.

Look, I absolutely hate campers, more than any of you could possibly comprehend, but I understand why you do it. Rushing takes a particular kind of skill that not everyone has. It's a very twitch playstyle that doesn't appeal to people with slow reflexes or bad aim. Now I'm not saying everyone that camps is a fat-fingered scrub, but that is the trend I have noticed.

Again, I'm talking about bad camping. The kind where you sit in a corner somewhere and never move. Defending objectives doesn't even count as camping really.

It's because you're getting more kills than them.

Don't forget, the people that call you a noob for camping are also the ones who dictate what type of weapons you're allowed to use, how you're allowed to use grenades, etc. etc.

I love playing the sniper so Camping is kinda what i do most the time, I've had most fun with it in battlefield 1943 getting in a tower laying some charges on a bridge, and, well lets just say its fun watching the enemy cross the bridge as i blow it *grins*

Camping in a Corner of a room: No skill, you're a noob and should probably just kill yourself.

Camping say, in some grass or something out in the open but still concealed by the grass: You're using your surroundings, you are most definitely not safe at all times, you're taking risks, you have balls. Not my play style, but I can dig it.

I will camp say, for 30 seconds if I KNOW a guy is around the corner. I won't sit around and wait for people unless I'm a sniper. Camping with a sniper, no matter what type, is fine by me.

You know what keeps me from being one of those guys that runs around headshotting everyone 100% of the time?
Lag. Horrible, horrible lag. Since I don't like in North America or Europe, broadband quality is lower than expected. So when faced front-to-front with someone, it rarely comes to a match of reflexes, because I'm lagged miliseconds behind I just get screwed.

I hate it because the camper is always, always, always faster than me. If I were a little faster, then I don't think I'd have such a problem with them.

I don't see the problem. The complaining about it has began to seem even more ridiculous after I started airsofting... Being a mil-sim sport, complaining about being shot in any fashion (not breaking safety rules, that is) only makes you seem like tool.
Any tactic that wins is a good tactic.

I kinda think the same of FPS games. I mean, you are the one getting owned, how can you complain that the other player sucks?
And honestly, you have to be pretty thick if you don't change you run'n'gun playstyle after being ambushed five times in a row.

The validity of camping tactics is kind of a non-issue. Campers can and do rack up kills from time to time, but experienced players always have strategies for dealing with them.

In any given map, there are only so many places you can actually camp and get away with it. (Larger maps have more than small ones.) Learning the locations of obvious campers is a mainstay of close-quarters killing. I personally am able to rack massive amounts of knife kills by running from one obvious camper-hole to another. Those clever enough to snag a couple kills in one spot, and move on to the next, are not considered campers.

Every game has *something* you can do to combat campers, and even the most cretinous of spawn campers. Learning these techniques is what separates players from whiners.

Spawn Camping - No.

But if people are snipers, it makes more sense to find some cover. (It's why I suck at getting any of the challenges for sniper rifles)

I'm fine with it though, for the most part. Campers have a bad habit of not watching their backs. Which means their backs have a habit of either A) getting pumped full of lead via a shotgun blast or B) being a convenient place to stick my knife for a couple of seconds.

It just depends on my mood, most of the time I'll be okay with it. Other times, the person should never meet me face to face as I would go even more insane and then things won't be pretty. I'll admit its a legitimate tactic, just don't be offended when I get angry over some 12 year old pixie-stick junkie camping near the spawn point then claim he has "Teh M4DD $K!LLZ!!!" later on.

The way I see it, campers are simply easier to kill, because they're staying in one spot rather than constantly moving. Very few in number are the spots where you can camp and be covered from ALL angles, so if you're killed by a camper when travelling one way, simply take the time to go another way and clear them out.

most people are pissy about spawncamping, which is kind of lame. but any other form, is legitimate tactics and are decried by sorry little pansies who get pissed every time the get killed because their daddy doesn't love them, etc etc etc. spawncamping is fixed by some games that do not have specific spawn points, but in a lot of games its common.

Pretty much this. After dying a few times you can spot the campers very easily where they always sit and can flank them and kill them everytime.

Spawn camping just sucks, other than that I have no problem with it.

They're fucking games...only MMO gamers get really moody over this topic, but then again those poor souls have no lives so it's understandable why they care so much...lol

Oh and the best strategy is the one that gets the job done....in Street Fighter games if you win by using throw all the time, as cheap as it is....what's cheaper is the noob that keeps falling for it again and again...lol
