Its been said, but by the time we have have a central capital for the entire world it would need to be its own country, sort of. I'd say a city in the sky created in equal parts by all of the world powers. Bonus points if it gets called Laputa.

London. It's central, MASSIVE, english speaking, which is a common tongue throughout the world, and given the age of the city and the history it would be pretty poignant. It may not be the oldest city, but with all the other advantages think of it as the cherry on top.

New York. You won't find a more diverse city than that. I has influences from every spectrum of human civilization [snip] Everyone has a stake in NYC.
Apart from Arabs & Muslims, who I suspect aren't feeling particularly represented there at the moment.

London, for one reason and one reason alone.......GMT.

Yeah, it has to be Britain.

We're in the middle of the map and at the top and everything - that's not a coincidence.

And it definitely isn't because we drew all the maps.

-

More seriously, somewhere in Africa or the Middle East is a bit more central (in a 'equidistant from other countries' kinda way) - if being central is important.

How about Basra? It used to be the Garden of Eden and Babylon is just around the corner and everything.
Are you serious? Muslims in NYC? Check. Did you hear anything about the Muslim community center being put up near the WTC site? Geographic centrality? Are you seriously looking at a 2d map for this? Basra is 95% Muslim. How is that diverse or important? You might as well make Skokie, Illinois the capitol.

I was thinking London, or somewhere in the nation that added the greatest effort to uniting the world.

I personally think it would be suitable and symbolic to have the capital be Rome. The city which was once capital of the then "known world" is a perfect place to act as capital of a united "new world".

Clearly the only way everyone would agree was if we chose something more awesome then even our espective home cities or countries.

I nominate a massive lunar fortress, visible from Earth with a building layout that spells "You Rule!" Even the strictest of patriots would think that was awesome.

I was thinking either under the sea or as a massive flying city, but for some reason I don't see either option working out well.

Well I would think my hometown, because it is awesome :)

Also, I like the way every option on there is a capital city of a country, except New York (mistake?)

just throwing this out there... Toronto, Canada is one of the most diverse cities in the world.

Ottawa is all politics and blandness anyway, so that's a good start.

srsly though: Tokyo

South pole city.

For the sake of neutrality.

Edit: And because we could make an awesome statue of Roald Amundsen.

Either Beijing, which is the capital city of the largest percentage of the world population, or London, because that's where the last "worldwide empire" was ruled from.

EDIT: yellingatpixels, as someone who lives very near Toronto, let me tell you that you don't want the world ruled from there. No one would agree on anything, and we'd have the Pillsbury dough-boy as the mayor of the world.

Jerusalem: the origin and center of three of the world's most popular religions (all Monotheistic. Actually, They're all about the SAME god. Makes me lol XP).

I never thought about it, but the comment at the end about the city having to be on Earth made me think about a capital city on the Moon. It's neutral territory, all humans on earth can see and are affected by the moon, and since there is neither flora nor fauna to bother, the city could cover the entire surface (to support a hopefully MASSIVE population).

EDIT:
