It can go both ways, I prefer for the game to have good graphics, but I won't be put off if a game has bad graphics.
agreed. I like good graphics, but as long as the game is good then im ok with crap graphics, hell my first computer only played Casettes and believe me, the graphics were not brilliant.

Normally I would say hell yes, but then you would call me a liar when I say Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time.
Didn't think it looked bad...

In fact I thought it looked pretty good.

Good graphics improve the gaming experience. Bad graphics can be forgiven where a game is otherwise good. Great graphics will never save a bad game.
^This^

I've enjoyed plenty of games that didn't look the best.

Do I need graphics? Well of course---I never really got into Zork-like text adventures. Do I need cutting-edge, state-of-the-art graphics? Hell no. I still play games that are older than dirt and love 'em.

it depends on the game. on silent hill i find that it might be better for it to keep the bad graphics while if its a game like myst it is good to have nice graphics.

Play the typical FPS with good graphics and then Fallout 3, you will definetly notice a difference. I dream of the day when Fallout or Elder Scrolls looks as good as Gears of War or Crysis.

Well you could always try a current game with classic graphics and see what that's like;

I think that makes a point. People won't admit it but graphics do matter. It's just that you can't judge old games by todays standards. If you look back at most of the 'classics' mentioned by those in this thread they all had decent to good graphics at the time they came out.

It's obviously not the most important part though.
Pffft, if a game came out and had those graphics I'd pick it up regardless.

If you can barely tell what you're doing, no matter how advanced the design/game/technology is, those are bad graphics and bad design.
Simplified graphics make no difference to me, but messy graphics matter.

So, yes you do need 'good' graphics. How advanced those graphics need to be varies from person to person.
I'm more concerned with how fun the game is, even if 'bad' graphics to play a small part with that factor.

Good graphics do not make a good video game. So long as the game play and story are well designed, most people don't give a flying howler monkey what the visual capabilities are like, unless it clashes with the other sections so badly that your eyes try to dig themselves into your skull to escape they horror.

In short: great add-on if you got everything else done, but don't make it your main selling point (Crysis I'm looking at you)

What happened to moderate poll options?

I love high tech graphics, but they aren't absolute game breakers. I still can play text games without getting bored.

It kills me, however, if I can't jack all the bars up to maximum.

lol, I know, but I just tried to give the polls a little enthusiasm and maybe generate a chuckle. I don't really think all people who like or dislike graphics are like that.

Retro games rule and are usually better than new ones. Nobody fucking cares about the CRAPHICS, but sometimes i find myself going "awwww, that looks damn awesome!" when playing a game. My last kinda experience like that was when i first saw "yoshis island" for the SNES. I mean, those mode 7 effects were AWESOME! Way more beatyful than the newer dark and grey games.

EDIT: And yes: Im a retro-collector. BUY THE NES OR YOU WILL BURN IN HELL! *cough cough* Exuse me.
