Well, I try, but sometimes it's impossible. I mean, take TF2's, it was practically non-existant.

I sorta view the campaign as a tutorial for the online bits.

At least, thats what the manual in MGS4 told me...

Man that was a good time.

I always play the campaign then if i'm in the mood to be called a noob, hacker or cheat by a numbskull 12 year old i'll play some multiplayer.

I will always finish the single player before I play the multiplayer content. at least for the PC anyway, on my ps3 I play single player only, simply becuase I don't like playing console shooters online.

Campaign first. Always.

There are few exceptions where I actually went to multiplayer before FINISHING the campaign, Halo 3 being one, I believe. I've never went to multiplayer before starting the campaign though.

I don't have xbox live, so I usually only get the opportunity to play a shooter's campaign.

I always play the campaign before I touch multiplayer for almost every shooter I own. The only exception to that rule is Team Fortress 2.

I only play campaign. Which is probably why I have so few Shooter games, not many can stand on their campaign alone.
Besides, I really don't enjoy playing with other people so...multiplayer has virtually no appeal to me.

Storytelling? An archaic concept in today's gaming for sure. Without that there is little to keep me going.

L4D skates the line between engaging multiplayer and story progression. I wish they'd made a cut scene for every stage. Implied story is valve specialty, but c'mon, how awesome are those intro cut scenes?!?

I tend to ONLY play the campaigns, as multiplayer has to compete with children, a mildly insane in-law, my wife, and the rest of real life (in that order)... and not generally with FPS games.

However, I have been able to clock some quick M/P time with AC:B, while said kids were entertained and the in-law watched on. Heck, the daughter was very helpful in piping up whenever something was amiss (sighted runner, another kill, etc.), and was supportive when I was invariably ambushed.

Now if they could just isolate mike chatter from other sounds, so I wouldn't have to dive for [MUTE] every time some dipsh*t with a very limited vocabulary joins in.

With exception of Left4Dead I haven't played a multiplayer shooter since the first counterstrike. Just don't like it. Singleplayer for me.

I only play the campaign...

Other than the odd bit of L4D, I have no real interest in multiplayer. As such, a good campaign is vital to my enjoyment of a shooter.

When I first get a new shooter I play the campaign, and then I'll probably do a bit of multiplayer to see what it's like. I usually finish the single player within the first week of having the game and then stick with the multiplayer.

Seconded this.
But then, Bad Company 2's campaign was horribly bad, so I think I can be forgiven that.
