Poll: FF7 is so popular because it was a lot of people's first JRPG

Personally FFIX was my first JRPG. And I loved it so maybe your point is still valid. But then again I replayed it recently and still loved it after 5+ years. Oddly enough I hated FF7, the plot was typical of an FF game but the characters were terrible (apart from Sephiroth). Everyone in the game appeared to be idiots, emo, or in the case of my weird abuse of the naming system, batman. Otherwise I found nothing in there that particularly excited me. In my opinion there was nothing done in FF7 that was not done far better in other installments.

Uhh, no, my first JRPG was FF1. I still have the old NES cartridge around here somewhere...

FFVII is my favorite game. It could be because of the childhood memories of my brother playing it, and then me playing it at the age of 7. But I think my first real JRPG was Chrono Trigger. And I loved both of them. But Final Fantasy VII has always been the golden treasure of gaming for me.

Yeah, right. It's not exactly a secret or subtle that the character is supposed to be the representation of the player in Fallout and similar games.

Say what you say, but that's obviously the experience most of these games are after.
As I said unl;ess the player is Richard Garriott that really isn't true.

Fallout is designed as an emulation of Role-Playing Games, as in a games where you role-play.

I think it is very shortsighted to try to pin down one reason to explain the outrageous fanbase of FFVII.

And no, it was not my first JRPG.

Never played it. My first major JRPG [not counting pokemon] was Kingdom Hearts. It's got FF characters, but it's not FF7. So this really doesn't apply to me, so thank you for the "Not Played" option on the poll...

Well, I will warn people that this could be legitimate flamebait, but I'm gonna say it anyway.

FFVII was my first JRPG. Then, after a long while I found Chrono Trigger for the DS and figured it was worth the money. I DID in fact enjoy both. Chrono Trigger brought some actual design sense into some standard RPG mechanics that tend to outright fail in other games. For example, magic is powerful, standard attacks are not useless, and changing your armor out for the situation actually has a noticable effect (see my "5% fire resistance" article)

But no. It did NOT have a good plot. It had a HORRIBLE plot. Lavos wants to destroy the world. Don't get me wrong, FFVII could be said is just Find/Replace Lavos->Sephiroth, but there's reasons behind it, there's plenty of other things going on, and since so much screwed-up stuff is going on, they take adequate time to explain it.

There were legitimately times in Chrono Trigger when I had no idea what my party was doing or where we were going. I fought my way through to Magus because I couldn't find anything else significant on the world map. I found Robo in my first trip to the future because there was nothing else to do. There were even times when I forgot where I had last been and just sort of wandered the ages looking for an NPC who would say something different. And then when I finally get to some potential plot exposition, they barely answer any questions and just said "keep doing what you're doing."

Heck, I could have avoided the whole part of the game between fighting Magus and joining him if my characters had paid more attention to exposition, with a simple;
"Hi, evil overlord. Who the heck are you and what are you doing with these ritual circles?"
"Why, I'm trying to destroy an evil menace that will take over the world at some point."
"Oh, I see! Let us help."

FFVII played things straight; Perhaps by having too-long cutscenes, but they were still pretty easy to appreciate, especially the 3D-rendered FMVs.

Which usually means running around as you alter ego, on alter-ego trip. Just count how many times your character is told how important, great or special he/she is in your average game of the sort.

It IS possible. PS1 brough gaming to a new audience and FF7 was the flagship RPG of the platform. Quite a few people might have had their first significant contact with a rich narrative mixed with complex game elements in that very game. That same group would also be unaccustomed to the various gaming and fantasy/scifi tropes, finding the whole experience memorable and fresh.
Huh, you talking to me?

Yeah, FF7 was THE game that introduced me to a whole new kind of gaming. As a kid, I couldn´t afford to run after every cool game that hit the shelves (Hell, if it wasn´t for my older brother, I probably wouldn´t be the gamer I am today), so all I could do was to choose the ones that were hyped, like Final Fantasy 7. Luckily, I wasn´t disappointed. I still like the game very much, even though it´s mostly because of nostalgia. It may not have aged very well, but I find myself unwilling to start wallowing in its flaws when it still has the merit of being the first of its kind (the kind being RPG).

I never had a Playstation so I started playing FF7 on the PSP. It's not a horrible game and the backgrounds still look good by portable game standards, but the character models are absolutely awful, the translation is riddled with mistakes and poorly-worded instructions, navigation through the maps is made needlessly difficult because it's hard to tell where you can walk and where you cannot, and the game is bogged down by a lot of boring minigames. But despite all these flaws, there's nothing about the game that makes me want to delete it off my card because I can't stand playing it. I guess it's so bad it's good.

I realized this after playing that game for the first time recently. I didn't understand how people could go crazy over these boring characters. All the hype made me expect that the story would be as good as Chrono Trigger, but I was disappointed. There was so much I didn't like that I figured I had to have been there when it was new to experience it truly. Back when there were over 9000 turn taking JRPGs on the playstation 1 ( was was there at the time but I was a Nintenerd), this game was most likely your first JRPG.

So the question of the thread is, is there a classic game you played well after its time, and didn't see what all the hype was about. Things like old sonic, MGS, GTA, whatever. Also to test my theory answer the poll on whether or not FF7 was your first serious JRPG, if you don't want to answer honestly because you don't like generalizations don't bother voting.

EDIT: I guess my theory only applies to those in the 15-19 age range, teens who grew up with the PS1/N64/SNES.
You're way too young to understand. We didn't have games like GTA IV or Mass Effect growing up, so games like FF7 were mind blowing.

was my first one that I got seriously into and I suppose that does influence a lot, but still, I love it so much and it will always have a warm spot in my heart!

I get that it's an RPG sandbox whatever and you can create a character as you choose, but I guess I'm not egotistical enough to find that to be very exciting.
You need to be egotistical to like freedom?
You do if your american!
Har har, I jest I jest.

OT: I actually never really got into any final fantasy games, including 7.

My first RPG was FF8 and the last one I played was FF5, yet I think FF5 is the best if you ask me.

I actually haven't played it, yet. The only Final Fantasy titles I've played so far are VI and Tactics, though I actually own X (I just haven't gotten to playing it yet; need to finish Tales of the Abyss first).

My first JRPG was probably Shining in the Darkness, for the Genesis.

By first good JRPG was Grandia.

What a grand time I had. After that, when I played FF7 it just paled in comparison. It's not even in my top 10 JRPGs. It's good, but not nearly as good as people make it out to be.
Hmmmm... I dont normally do this, but QFT.

Grandia was the one to "pop my JRPG cherry" too. That. Game. Was. Awesome! After that FF was simply too painful to play, because of the inferior battle system (RAISE THE FLAME SHIELD!!!).
FACT, not opinion, FACT: To this day the Grandia series battle system remains the best turn based battle system of all time.
Perhaps, but what does that have to do with FF7? That game used active-time battle.

Granted, it wasn't the best at it. That title goes to Baten Kaitos Origins.
