I reply thusly:
"A life of what? Dealing with all the crap you deal with? Going to a soul-crushing 9-5 day job in some tiny cubical withering away while contributing nothing major to society? Sure I work in a dead-end retail job, but at least I'm happy. At least I love my life. At least I enjoy it. When you contribute something meaningful to humanity, when you actually help people, when you actually do something that matters, then come back and lecture me. And even then, it wouldn't make you better than me, it would make you an asshole. No wplease shut the hell up and get away from me."
It changes a bit from person to person but its the same basic thing all 'round.
Worked well so far.

The more horrified and melodramatic, the better. They'll say something about my being insane, so I quote Ford Prefect's soliloquy on going mad in it's entirety ("Then I decided I was a lemon, and a pond was a gin and tonic, and spent a month jumping in and out of it") and they go away.

They make a point, whether it is a worthy one or not is another matter. If someone says "your hat is on fire" you could defend yourself by replying "no it isn't". Yet if you say "define fire" it changes the subject, you mention nothing of your hat, and if there was an idiot around he might take this to mean that you know your hat is on fire and you do not deny it.Zeithri said:
A more devious insulter might also respond with "see the world, go travelling, meet new people and cultures, read books, have fun". You might know they are a lying, devious so-and-so and that they do none of these things themselves and they are just trying to make you look bad. But yeah, mostly they will respond with "get drunk blah blah blah". The ones who do respond in an intelligent way will usually only have been joking around in the first place rather than be some macho fathead.
