Halo sold me on an original Xbox, and later several more games and a 360. It got me back into console gaming.

Half Life was an alright, albeit incredibly and very blatantly linear, first person shooter. I picked up 2 when I got the Orange Box, beat it, enjoyed it, will buy the newest episode. But I didn't upgrade my PC in anticipation of it, I didn't pre-order it, I didn't pick up an Xbox to play it...so in terms of what had a lot more impact on me, it'd be Halo.

What a surprising result... seriously, people here dislike Halo 3 and LOVE Half-Life. I haven't actually played it awkwardly enough, I don't have any good of a PC.
The Orange Box: Available on PC, 360, and PS3. Contains Half life 2, Half life 2 episode 1, Half life 2 episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2.
HHhhmmmm... I guess I should have gotten that eh? A few great games for the price of one! Maybe if I see it cheap somewhere I will get it.

I've played both completely and I still go back to the original Half-Life every year or so just to get that incredible sense of apocalyptic abandonment.

Original Halo is just another has-been FPS nowadays.

I do, however, love Halo 3 and have played many a co-op//multi//singleplayer games but it just doesn't stand up to the grittyness and pure intensity of the Half-Life series.

Half Life gets my vote.

Half-Life. Even If I'm in the dangerously insignificant minority that liked the first a whole lot more than the second.

I remember every bit about either Half-Life game. I only remember the main character's name from Halo.

Liked the first halo, the multiplayer was alot of fun. But Half Life is timeless. Still run through it and the expansions every once in a while.

I dislike how people claim that linearity detracts from Half-Life. There is so much that you can miss from one playthrough, and the story is given through investigating. For example, the 7 hour war is discussed if you check out certain newspapers in Black Mesa East. You can also learn how the rebels are feeling, by listening in to their conversations. None of it is required, or spoonfed, and adds to the immersion. If you really care about the storyline, you would take the time to find out. If you don't, Half-Life still has one of most simplistic, yet satisfying shooter style and puzzles.

Incredibly and VERY blatantly linear?
that's some maximum wording there :p

At what point was Halo ever any different in terms of linearity?
Halo may have masked the linearity in some areas and kudos to that but it was essentially on the same level.
Half-life was linear yes, though it compensated for this by utilising intelligent map designs and interactive, puzzle-like solutions to solve situations or defeat enemies in the game. This is what set it aside as more than just an FPS.

I've also never had to upgrade my PC for any Half-life games, that's what i love about the Source Engine - it's solid and well engineered to look brilliant on many PC's - Lowend to highend.

Why is anyone talking about linearity in a Halo Vs Half-Life argument? Their both linear games...

What kind of a question is that? That's like comparing a brand new mountain bike to a three-wheeled toy for 5-year olds.
I want to leave my post blank, because anything I say will just be pale compared to the quote.

This is one-sided and not surprising.

For me, it's Half-Life as well, I have to say.

halo sucks.... FACT!

lol.. its just so... bland.. i dont like it... you could match any other game instead of half life and i would choose the opposite of halo, but... coincidentally... i actually like half life... so whoopee

Counter Strike 1.6.

Unless, in your horrible grammar and punctuation, you had forgotten about other Half Life games. Unless we are comparing Half Life 1 vs Halo 1? Then I doubt anyone is still playing Halo 1's multiplayer. 1.6? Still a lot of people playing.
