I went to a camp in the summer and I had a small hatchet with me for protection. (Never had to use it but still)

once and a while i will carry around a pocket knife or a spray can of deodorant, once i carried a katana but that was at a yard sale because i didn't want anything stolen
is that more of a threat kind of thing or if some one took something you would literally slaughter them with a katana?

This type of thinking gets you killed.

May I recommend everyone read Put 'Em Down, Take 'Em Out, Knife Fighting Techniques from Fulsom State Prison, and get those very dangerous movie style ideas of a knife fight out of your head, k?

Another good read is Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons by Marc MacYoung.

I always get a little squirrely when I read these sort of threads and see posts from people that carry knives but have their heads full of shit they see in the movies.

Personally, I used to carry a switchblade back in my young and dumb days, but I lost the damn thing somewhere so I'm finding a replacement, I'm probably going to get a KARBAR TDI Knife. Been reading a lot of good stuff about them, and I'd like to check one out.

I have a XDm 9mm but it's a bit too bulky for daily carry. I'm shopping about for a compact pistol if anyone has some recommendations.
This guy sounds like he has the right idea. I've thought for a while now that butterfly knives were pretty crap. All that spinning is worthless (in a fight, you want to keep a good grip on the knife), the blade is thin and the whole knife is pretty small. I'd rather have a decent piece of metal pipe or a tactical fixed-blade knife.

Real life is definitely not like the movies. Looking for trouble will lead to you finding it, and fighting more than one person is definitely not advised. Also, nobody plays fair.

I always have at least two firearms, a machete and three knives with me at all times.
What part of your country are you from and how in lords name do you even hope to conceal a machete?

Where I live was meant to be statistically the most dangerous place in Britain on multiple occasions, but I don't carry weapons, I'm learning Krav Maga.

My friend however decided carrying a screwdriver is a decent idea.
The problem with Britain is that for some odd reason, the criminal has all the rights and the guy he attacks is expected to just sit back and take it.
So true, there used to be a law a few mounths ago that stated if someone broke into your house and you cause them "bodily harm" you could go to jail or be sued by the burglar, I personally don't carry weapons but if it's for self defence I understand why some people do. However, I've been doing karate for four and a half years so self defence is not that much of a problem for me.

Never - it's just not needed where I live, in Australia. Oh sure, there are some bad parts of Australia where violence is pretty common - but it's also pretty easy to avoid it. Just don't go out to bars and clubs at night or the city centre a 1 am, and immediately, you've avoided 99.9% of the potential thugs that are out there.

The problem with carrying weapons with you to defend yourself is that it encourages other people to carry weapons as well, and there you go, you've got a violent society. The problem is, that you can't stop it - it's a self compounding problem. You flush a nation with guns and knives and then no one will ever put them down and the situation just gets worse and worse. In Australia, we never flooded our nation with guns and so gun deaths per capita is incredibly rare, when compared to nations like the US.

Of course the solution is not to get rid of guns. The guns are on the street already, you can't put the genie back into the bottle. When it comes to gun violence the US is already doomed to be perpetually violent. The only thing the US can do is stop it getting worse, by preventing fully automatic weapons and assault rifles from coming into the country.

I used to get very paranoid when I was left alone in my house when my parents went out. I'd always make sure I had some form of blunt object to defend myself with (brush handle, tennis racquet etc).

I never had to use them, but it made me feel better.

I carry a weapon whenever I can get away with it and if I can't I usually make it habit to note the best alternatives I can grab from my surroundings.

I don't usually carry a weapon around with me, but the nearest I've got was taking a cricket bat (my friend had some piping strapped to his thigh that he nicked from work) when I was going to go and watch a gang fight from the top of a hill. The fight didn't happen though because one of the gangs got arrested on the way down to the park, probably clanking as they walked or something. So we went home.

at a careers expo last year a kid got stabbed with a knife that they were handing out (it was from a cooking university and made of plastic), so i picked a couple of those up to make sure in case someone else tried something

anyway despite the fact i live in one of the worst parts of Victroia i dont carry any sort of self-defense weaponry, maybe thats because i live in australia

I have one time I can remember why I was carrying it. My brother and I were taking a road trip to California to Minnesota. When we pulled over at a Target for some food supplies he got scared by all the guys dressed as tough gangsters and we had a decent looking car. So we flipped a coin I lost so I was stuck sitting in the car with about a 6 inch buck-knife in hand waiting for him to buy stuff.

Nothing ever really. I don't go out alone much though, and where I live is pretty low crime-wise, I think. Being reasonably tall, I guess I have to rely on my potential for intimidation or my long-ish legs to run away. I'd learn martial arts or go to the gym to get bigger before carrying a weapon if I really felt at risk. I like to think a bit of awareness and diplomacy can avert violence. Sadly, I'm probably wrong.

Just opening a butterfly knife fast will scare the shit out of most people. It shows that you know how to handle the weapon. In a direct confrontation a display of confidence and capability can go a long way towards talking your would be attacker down.

As for actually stabbing someone? From behind with a stiletto, you'd never even know I was there.

I carry different knives depending on where I am. Plus the fact that I'm a heavyweight boxer and wrestled in High School most people don't mess with me.

Also on another note when I read the title of the thread I swear it said have I ever carried a WOMAN for self defense.

Swiss knife at all times. In Iraq I used to walk around with a Fairbairn-Sykes (silver steel) tucked either in my pants or boots. I used to sleep with it under my pillow too. And around the house back then (in Iraq), the AK-47 would never leave my side, even in my sleep.

This was AFTER we got raided.

Also have some training in karate, taekwondo, & aikido.
