I would walk infront of my loved one and try to hypnotize him, then disarm him and knock him out. I think it could work, that or try to talk him out of it.
As I cannot really vote 2 options I will have to go with my personal choice in the worst-case-scenario. Shileding the one I love the most first off and hope he doesn't do anything stupid afterwards. Should I be alone it would depend on the circumstances but as I got little reason to live other than to protect and care for my loved ones I'd need to judge that on short hand.

I'd try to disarm him. That way, he'll aim at me instead of the loved one meaning they can get away. So I'll either live and be a hero, or die and be a hero (obviously I'd prefer the former). If he's going to shoot though, you're going to die for definite if you shield someone else.
Fall back to a defensible choke point and ambush him. First strike is something blunt to either the kidneys or skull, next is a supinating wristlock on his weapon hand; break his finger in the trigger guard, take it away from him. Strip the weapon and restrain him until police arrive.
It also depends on the weapon. If it's some punk with a knockoff 9mm Glock, I'd be more inclined to act sooner rather than later. But if he's got a Colt 45, or a heavy revolver, I'll wait because those weapons just have more killing potential.
As a side note: A local restaurant here got robbed by a gunman wielding an semi-automatic pistol with the slide locked back. That means that the magazine is EMPTY. That means you smack him with the cash drawer.

Every single one of you is a liar. Nobody can know what they will do in any situation before it happens, anything else is just wishful thinking, even if you've been in a similar situation before.
What I think I would do is try to break his arm, take the gun and shoot him in the face. I would more likely get in front of the loved one and shot, though.
