Take a look at my profile, I was 10 in 2000. I was a kid then and there are the fucking cartoons(with a few exceptions) that I'm talking about.
-Did anyone see the Batman Beyond Epilogue episode in Justice League Unlimited? If you love Batman, you will make it your mission to see this shit! Wonderful Star Wars moment there.
I didn't look at your profile as you were talking as though you were referring to cartoons from the 90's, as most people that talk about old cartoons talk about the 90's and 80's and then complain about cartoons released recently.

Also, we have only just now started the next decade, 2010, it's really hard to say what kind of cartoons will be around or what we will see.

That is the pure essence of awesome.
And their spears shot off as missiles!

We can only hope our kids will have it as good as we did. I weep for my younger siblings. At least I got to watch Dragon Ball Z with my little brother.

Nostalgia makes them better, some toons now suck way bad but others are quite good and still have some (Even more subtle) adult funnies.

Those 90's cartoons were actually something I could watch with my dad. We would sit down together and watch Dexter's Lab, Courage the cowardly dog, and the old school Johnny Quest. The 60's Johny Quest were the shit. Seriously, watch it. If nothing else, you will finally get a lot of the Venture Bros. jokes.

Cartoons are not as good, but growing up also affects how you look at them. Even if you never wanted that to change.

I currently own DVD collections for Darkwing Duck, Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, Gargoyles, Beast Wars, Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles, Sonic the Hedgehog, Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond and many others. Believe me, even if there is a lack of cartoons in the future, my children will know what some of the real classics are :D

This brings to mind the Onion headline about Science announcing that all culture was best when you, the reader of this post, were 14 years old.

...Which Sonic the Hedgehog? The one with Scratch and Grounder, the one with Princess Sally, or the one where he has a brother and sister and plays in a rock band to save a dystopian future?

Batman: The Animated Series was my favorite growing up. Then of course some of the old school Cartoon Network and early Toonami. (Pudgy Tom is still my favorite)

Oh, and the first season of Power Rangers. Pink Ranger Kimberly was my first girl-crush. xD

The good one with the actual plot line that followed the Archie comics. I reallllly hate the one with Scratch and Grounder, not viewing material at all IMO.

I've been an avid cartoon watcher for years and I've noticed the crap that has passed for entertainment lately. The Misadventures of Flapjack is totally fucked up and Chowder makes me want to murder children. When I was growing up we had Transformers, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, Cow and Chicken, Invader Zim, Batman, Spider-man, Samurai Jack, Darkwing Duck, Rocko's Modern Life, Swat Kats, and everything by Steven Spielberg, just to name a few. Cartoons today are passable to pretty good, and those are far and few between. Is it just the nostalgia bug, or am I actually right for once? Escapists, give me your opinions!
-Note: I watch so many cartoons because I have younger siblings. I do!
Thank goodness I'm not the only one who wishes to do bodily harm to the makers of Chowder. Ren and Stimpy would wipe the floor with Spongebob, and I should also mention that intelligent humor has gone out the window a while ago. Has anyone ever seen Samurai Pizza Cats? The show where they had pizza-delivering felines? That has more intelligent humor than the crud I see passed for cartoons today. Sorry to be so harsh.

I think cartoons took far more risks when we were kids, as such, adults were able to relate with them as well.

I think that, now that we've grown, we're able to appreciate the subtle references to more adult-oriented themes that most shows (namely, the 90's) had used so wildly, to a much greater extent.
Case in point:
You could never show this today. The mixture of pedophilia/psychotic tendencies, as subtle as they may be, would make parents break out in a cold sweat.
What are you talking about? Have you ever SEEN an episode of flapjack? The paedophilic vibes from that show are disturbing, as is the rest of the show.
Cartoons now are really, really good. Avatar: the last airbender, Flapjack, Chowder, The Venture Brothers, South Park, The simpsons.
The problem is the new trend of live action shows on entities such as the disney channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon(!?) Network, as well as the prevalence of anime being translated and used in place of good, old fashioned american cartoons.

I've said this time and time again, its all about the same and all relative. I'm 21 and still love cartoons. Something things I have noticed going on though, the good ones aren't always promoted well anymore. Invader Zim, Megas XLR, El Tigre, and just recently Spectacular Spider Man were all top notch but were undceroimonisly canceled after only 2 seasons because they weren't promoted, especially if you aren't a kid. Shows like Avatar and Phenius and Freb are receiving their just respect, but the reason you aren't seeing them is because you aren't looking hard enough any more, and thats probably because you don't watch cartoons any more. I will say the around the time of the mid 2000's I would have agreed with you. Nick was trying to get disneys teen demographic and all cartoon network had was there last surviving cartoon cartoons Girm adventures and Ed Edd and Eddy, also 4kids drove Saturday morning cartoons in to the ground, so those are gone.
