The PSP died quite a while ago. It died for me after playing the remake of Final Fantasy II but it died for everybody else after they beat God of War. Now Sony plans to revive it by releasing the PSP GO ... which doesn't take the UMDs nobody bought so if the people decide to 'upgrade' they will have to re-buy the games they already didn't buy in order to play them.

The PSP Go looks cool because sliders are cool but the whole; you-must-download-to-play thing seems like a step backwards to me. "Oh you say you spent $40 on God of War unchained? Well then I suppose you wouldn't mind spending another $40 to play it on your hip-N-trendy new PSP Go!"
Which is why I won't get a PSP Go. Personally I like my PSP, it has Darth Vader on it. And it lets me play Metal Gear Solid when I'm not at home. Like on my breaks at work.

I won a free PSP a whiel back and tried to get into it but couldnt;. My biggest complaint was how difficult it was for me to see the screen in non dark rooms. I hear this has been fixed since then. I still decided to sell the PSPS and buy more 360 games.

i frankly find that while the PSP had a rocky start, it has slowly become quite a powerful in its selection. While it definetly won't get ahead of Nintendo's dual screen giant, the PSP i feel has definetly gotten the jumpstart that it really needs as sony has learned certain lesson's in the handheld market. While I am cautious about how the PSP Go will try to give it more support (a umd-less psp for 250? I think you learned your lesson already, sony....."599 us dollars") Its first party lineup could give it a second wind; while it may be too late, the handheld still has some form of chance in the market.

It has a small but devoted following that will likely continue into the future, but it will never match the DS.

What with Nintendo DS having 80% market share over the PSP from the get-go I'd say it was never born! At least not completely realized. I don't think the PSPGO will be different, especially with many retailers boicotting it.

Sony is slowly killing itself one shot in the foot after another. Were it not for their cell phone sales, they'd be bust by now.
how can the ds have 80% of the handheld market? ds has sold 100 million whereas the psp has sold 50 million, that means that at most the ds could have 70% of the handheld market. still leaves nintendo with a big majority, but not an 80% majority.

second, sony is a VERY large company, which sells tvs, radios, dvd/blu-ray players, laptops and desktops, speakers, cell phones, cd players, makes movies and tv shows and video games and consoles. theres not one part holding the entire company up, they are one of, if not the largest electronics companies in the world.

finally, i somewhat agree with your last point. i dont think they are killing the whole company, but they ARE killing the psp at every turn. with a new release every year for the past few years (the slim, psp-3000 a year later, the psp go and now rumors of ANOTHER update to the classic psp launching later this year to replace the 3000). of course that should be obvious looking at how they handled the psp's security. 1.50 had a bug that allowed unsigned code, but it couldnt be used to access the systems flash memory. in their rush to get that security hole fixed they flung a firmware update out just to fix it without testing it and gave the community holes that DID allow the flash memory to be changed, and they continued to do this firmware after firmware until they just stopped and actually FIXED the holes AND tested the updates, but because they rushed things and didnt do the testing is why the psp got so out of hand in terms of being hacked.

and their doing the same thing with the psp. instead of designing a new psp thats better in every way they keep making marginal improvements and releasing that every year, giving people the sense that the new versions are significantly better when their not, making those who purchased psp's feel like they wasted their money and potential new customers feeling like they will waste their money if they buy now.

if sony wants to make the psp sell better the first thing they need to do is open the system up to homebrew games, something they promised it would be capable of from the beginning. that alone would kill a good portion of those with hacked psp's, making them upgrade to the latest official firmware with not chance to go back to custom firmware. and of course they need to market the system and its games better than they do. and of course dropping the price of games to $30 instead of $40 would help as well, because $40 IS a lot of money to pay for a portable game that probably wont last half as long as a retail pc/console game.

but i digress. i believe it hasant died. i think that they system had a lot of potential if sony had had a lot of the features they promised back before they system was released in 2005, but over the years people have become aware of the fact that its pretty much an overhyped handheld and have become less receptive of it. theyve also shot themselves in the foot with constant releases of marginal upgrades that have confused and in some cases angred existing and potential customers and their marketing is pretty much non-existent these days.

Well, seeing as I've always loved my PSP and played it pretty regularly save for the small time at college that I used my DS more only because we liked playing group Mario Kart I'd say it has always lived on in the niche it carved for itself.

Plus I agree with those who say Dissidia is great and would like to say I haven't put down my PSP for my DS since it came out.

I found that it started out in critical condition, I never really found anything on it to be that spectacular, and after a few months it was already gathering dust.

How could a console be dead with a 50 million install base and more big titles coming out for it this holiday season than ever? It's not dead by a long shot. I didn't think that much of it since I bought one earlier this year but I play it all the time. It's a great system.

One of the biggest misconception ever made. I don't even know how this started. According to an interview with SCEA, next-gen biz said "Sony To Offer UMD Replacement Service For PSP Go."

"We're in the midst of putting together a good will program," Koller told Gizmodo. "We'll be unveiling that soon [because] we actually think there's a significant group that will be upgrading from the [PSP] 1000.

?In the past, we've seen a 20-25 percent trade-up factor, and I assume that's going to be the case here. We've modelled that. So we're looking at a good-will program - a short term good-will program that would continue for years afterwards.?

Anyways, with the Minis series, the new GT game, new Jak game, Soul Calibur, etc. I'm gonna go dust off my PSP and find my adapter soon.

the PSP is trying to eat more than it can chew. The DS has a huge library. Plus Sony's just trying to be better than it. Why do you think Microsoft hasn't come out with a XBox handheld? Because they know it would fail. Nintendo might suck with regular consoles. But when it comes to Handheld they are the best to choose from. Then again the PSP is just another option in life. Just like choosing a 360, PS3, or Wii.
