It's quite depressing that at least 36 people think music has gotten worse since 1996. No matter what your taste is, there's more different kinds of music being created than ever before. If you can't find something you enjoy it's either because you aren't looking hard enough or because you have some irrational bias against music made within the last 10 years.

Am I to assume you're around my age, Soilent? Because I graduated high school in 1995 and generally believe that any music made after 1995 is complete crap. Except Dragonforce. I love Dragonforce. They're carrying the torch of 80s-style speed metal.
Hm, starting to see a pattern here... Maybe you guys should try to expand your tastes beyond metal?

If I did that I'd have to say that everything made after June 3, 1899 is crap. (you get a cookie if you figure out why I chose that date.)

It's not just metal. Classic rock died in 1991 when Nirvana's Nevermind came out, and if I were a few years older (or more than a few, like my stepfather) I'd probably say music died then. The era of the singer-songwriter died on my fourth birthday (July 16, 1981---another cookie's on offer for that one), and funk died when it all went synth or got covered by rappers in the early-mid 1980s.

For me to say 1995 is being generous (although I do loves me some Dragonforce.)

I think the main music trends since 1996 have been rubbish. Examples: Nu-metal, the revival of garage rock, and manufactured pop idols.

However, there have been some awesome bands since 1996, such as Mastodon, Lacuna Coil, Trivium, Audioslave, Them Crooked Vultures, and Muse. Plus there have been some great albums by older bands, such as Dream Theater's last four albums, and Megadeth's last couple.

I long for the old days when it seemed like the charts were dominated by something other than useless crap

Iron Maiden's Brave New World came out in 2000, Bruce Dickinson released Tyranny of Souls in 2005, and before that, the Best of Bruce Dickinson (2001) and The Chemical Wedding (1998) where also great albums. Delain's April Rain came out in 2009, which i really love, likewise their sister-band Within Temptation have also released some good albums in the "noughties". Alestorm's debut album Captain Morgans Revenege came out in 2008, Persuader's The Hunter came out in 2000, I think all of Ayreon's stuff came out after 1996...so yeah, i could go on but in my opinion there is plenty of good stuff which came out after that date. Minus the "Nu-Metal" problem, i don't think the heavy metal genre is having many issues.

I voted the Green Day one.

Irrelevent, but true.
Except American Idiot was one of Green Day's worst Albums, Warning was 10x better as were Dookie and Nimrod.

Edit: Wait, I do Believe I have been baited. Well played sir.

Alterbridge. I love Metallica's stuff shit, from old to new. Tool and A Perfect Circle and stuff is also not bad. But not much else. I'm more of a classic rock person.

I can find no good music to think of that was created after 1996, nothing remotely memorable, except for Rammstein, who continues to pump out the good shit.
Admitedly there may have been less good metal since 1996, but to dismiss all music across all genre's since 1996 is a little short sighted surely?

Radiohead - OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail To The Thief

Those were pretty damn good albums.

I think you're kind of looking at things with rose-tinted glasses, or however the expression goes. 90% of the music that came out before 1996 was crap, and 90% of the music that came out after 1996 has been crap. The trick is to find the 10% that's good and that you enjoy.

I laugh at this statement, Rammstein is fucking awful.

Most of my music is after 1996, and it's good shit.
Its all a matter of Opinion.
And there lies the massive flaw in this thread. It would be interesting to know how old you are.

I like anything from 1600-1980 (except punk (DAMN I HATE PUNK))

Everything before is pretty dull (or Greensleeves, which is ace)

Everything after is...is...I cannot even think of a sutible hate-laden analogy. It's just so bad

Seeing as about 90-95% of the music I like is from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, I'm going to say that anything after 1996 is generally bad. However, exceptions do exist.

Let's see...Pearl Jam's BEST albums arguably came before 1996...but then again, "Do the Evolution" and "Given to Fly" were on albums released AFTER 1996.

So, music was still good.

>_>

Yes. I am basing this opinion solely on Pearl Jam.

If you can't find any good post-1996 music then I can only assume that you are blind. If anything music has only gotten better, although it has evolved from the old stuff, maybe you should try and listen to something new rather than clinging to the type of music that has been done 100's of times and most people are bored with. Judging by what I can see of your music tastes, you should find "Between the Buried and me" to be far better than Rammstein. Though as far as music goes, that whole genre is lacking.

I'm curious, why exactly 1996?

OT: If you havent been able to find anything you like since then, well, you're not looking hard enough. There's "the good shit" about, just have to find it. You're clearly into your metal, as are many here, check out some of the other music threads and see if you likey ;)

Manic Street Preachers, Muse and Rise Against are three somewhat good bands off the top of my head. I think there is good music post 1996, but I'd be lying if I said it was better than pre-1996.
