Really? I'm the only hippie here? Nobody else uses natural stuff?
Natural as in sitting auround a bowl of boiling herbs and spices for congestion? Or natural as in like... cheroke hair tampoons?
Natural as in herbal medicines and teas...the other idea kinda scares me a bit.
(Snip)
The points of the mini-rant are-

1) a single multivitamin = good.
2) herbals = questionable benefit with side effects.
3) overuse of drugs = bad, but if you're suffering or have something which can be treated, drugs = good.
When I say herbal meds I'm referring to plants that we actually know the effects of, not the "herbal" pills you are talking about.

And I agree with you on vitamins but I am a strong believer that people should get all their vitamins through there diet...and so I do. But in the case of other people I'm sure that is probably a good way to keep your body healthy.
Yeah, I thought you meant the supplements.

For sure, good diet's the way to go, but since most American's wouldn't eat healthy if you put a gun to their head and said "eat healthy," most of us should take a multivitamin.

A general rule of thumb is to wait at least a week if you have flu or cold-like symptoms, then go see a doctor.

if sleep fails, pills. not taking pills or taking pills, it doesn't matter honestly, you're still going to die in the end. and, unlike smoking, pills don't pollute everything around you.

If you're worried about building up a tolerance to NSAIDs after taking a few for infrequent headaches, you are misinformed. A tolerance requires frequent usage, just like drinking three cups of coffee a day will build up a tolerance to caffeine. However, IT GOES AWAY if you don't use the drug for a while.

If you are worried about creating super bacteria, you are also misinformed. A bacterial infection is not something that you want kicking around ANYWHERE in your body for very long. Yes, you are covered in and full of bacteria all the time, but it is a fine equilibrium. They are your friends; You would die a horrible death without them. Yes, your immune system will probably take care of whatever is out of hand, but if it doesn't, the chance of creating drug-resistant bacteria by taking antibiotics is pretty slim. Even if a mutation happens (or more likely is already present in a few individuals) the antibiotics will wipe out most of the bad bacteria and the mutants that remain will be swept up by your immune system. A resistance gene is something that takes a long time for an entire population to gain--bottom line--you are not going to create super bacteria by yourself. I'd be more worried about a lab creating it and unleashing it upon the world.

If you have a cold or flu or any other viral infection just take it easy; there isn't much that you can do but wait and try to stay comfortable.

EDIT: The tone of this thread shifted right after I finished posting. So, the only vitamins that you should ever worry about getting too much of are the fat-solubles A, D, E, K, a few Bs if you take 100+ times the RDA at a time, and stuff that you will probably never get too much of unless you try to like Iron or Zinc. C and all Bs you will pee out unless you take an insane amount all at once (see above), as they are water-soluble.

So yeah, take a multivitamin every day. It can't hurt.

Every day I take (separately):

- B12 (16,667% DV)
- B6 (5000% DV)
- One-A-Day maximum multivitamin
- Calcium with Vitamin D precursor
- Omega-3 fish oil

Toss in some caffeine pills when I want/need some pep, and you can see that pills are not a problem for me.

I don't think caffeine is addictive, btw. It gives a mild euphoria for the duration, but I tell myself I'm going to take some but I still forget to (before class/workout/etc). Wouldn't happen if I was addicted =p. 10 cents a pill can't be beat.
You are taking too much B unless you happen to be an elephant. Any that you need will be in the multivitamin. And caffeine isn't very addictive--you just might get a headache or feel sluggish if you don't get it and are a habitual user.

well, if it's just a headache then you should definitely take some drugs. don't wait it out, what's the point it'll go away and all you have to do is swallow two pills!

I love taking paracetamol I don't know why. it's not a pain thing because I've broken both my feet and not gone to the hospital because I was trying to be all hard.

Normally I wait it out. If I have something important to do I might take something. I don't like to take them too often otherwise I feel their effects less.

When I do I often take paracetamol (e.g. panadol) with ibuprofen (e.g. nurofen) as they break down in different organs, kidneys and liver respectively, meaning no overdose. Both are effective painkillers and together kill all but the worst pain.

Even when my appendix burst, I still didn't take anything. That was one week of agony...

Meanwhile, according to my cousin, I am usually ill (True) but I wait it out, but according to him, when he is ill, it hits him like a tone of bricks.

Currently, my desk looks like a chemist.
Paracetamol, Gaviscon, lip balm and hand gel.

I need paracetamol for my arthritis anyway.

Normal body aches - I just ignore it. Minor headaches I usually ignore as well. Actual illness - if there's a cure I'll probably take it. Major aches and pain are handily dulled with naproxin/asprin and I'm certainly not above taking them.

Also, people keep mentioning a drug called paracetamol, which I've never heard of before.

Unless I'm trying to go to sleep I usually just wait it out. If I'm tired though, that is a different story.

Wait it out on anything except severe headaches, and I just take one painkiller(paracetamol) for those.

I've been suffering from chronic migraines since I was 7. Painkillers are my best friends(I'm probably going to die when I'm 40...orz).

Typically my sickness centers around my throat, so if I feel I must, go for a tablespoon of good old dextromethorphan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckley's].

i usually don't take such stuff, i guess in my whole quarter of a century i spent on this world i took about 2,5 aspirin.
now a got a broken foot and it hurts like hell if i move, but i got to work at least a little bit today so i took the stuff my doc prescripted me last week.
damn i'm really not used to that, not a big difference to a bottle of whisky, needed 3 attempts to grap my cup of coffee

I can bear pain until it gets in the way of my sleep. I can usually wait it out though. If it doesn't improve after a while then I'll take some paracetamol. Usually things like muscle rub, heat packs and ice packs make me feel better than medication does anyhow.
