In games if i have a choice i pick the opposite gender(also for mmo's). Same for D&D i play. Though when it comes to relations in games (like mass effect) i prefer a female companion though a male one is not a problem(garrus is sexy). It is even so bad that when i play a male character in D&D my group looks at me like WTF ? My mmo guild does not even wanna acknowledge my male mule (calling him an it >.<).

I am more likely to play a female character. I think it has something to do with the fact that the first videogame I ever played was Tomb Raider III, so I've always been more used to playing girls in games, it's just become one of the things I do.

Also, I often think the voice acting is a concern for me, and especially for Mass Effect I just think Jennifer Hale is a much better voice actress, and since I get to pick which actor is the lead, why wouldn't I choose the one who does a better job? (Solely in my opinion.)

I actually prefer playing female characters, don't know why... When I play any RPG which lets you pick a gender I always play as a woman on the first playthrough. I just think it's more fun that way. And you get to put yourself in the position of someone completely different from you, and do some actual Roleplaying.

And BTW, this topic has been done a lot. So you might get people complaining about that. I don't mind it, I think it's an interesting topic. But just as a heads up.
I think I know why you pick female chars. As a friend of mine put it. If im gonna spend hours playing a game whilst being forced to look on a chars arse. Its going to be a female arse.

haha! Yeah I think that might be true ^^. unfortunately I also play females in games like fallout which are in First Person mode. Ok so maybe they aren't, but have you tried playing fallout in 3rd person? But I think your friend is right regarding 3rd person games, like Mass Effect.
Plus, my Fem Shep was HOT!

I play as a woman 90% of the time. Hooray for living vicariously through fiction.

But I don't care one way or another.

Got nothing against it honestly as long as it is for the right reasons (well right for me).

I'll play games with opposite sex leads no problem, as well as characters in fighters and fps games that have opposite character, like in Time Splitters.

I don't even have a problem with people playing custom opposite sex character, if it's for the sake of playing from a different perspective (ie, different scenes and phrases for the character, like in Mass Effect).

However I personally don't like to play as a custom female character (I'm male btw) because of the following reasons:

I don't play video games to oggle the opposite sex (which most of the people I know who play the opposite sex do it for this reason).
I find it harder to find my self in the rol of a female (like in games like Mass Effect and Oblivion). I just like my version of this character but be well, like me. I make the choices I would make if it where me in the game. So yeah it kinda messes with my immersion factor.

So in short I'll play a female if she is the lead, but if given the choice I'll stick my own gender thank you :D

As a female gamer I usually end up playing as a male, but when given the choise I'll always play as a girl for my first runthrough and then a guy for my second one. It dosen't really matter to me though.

I don't have a problem with it. I often play an opposite gender character in RPGs on my second playthrough to see if the NPCs treat me different.

No, it doesn't bother me... Much.
However, I did feel kinda stupid for dressing my Fallout 3 character in the "sexy sleepwear" outfit and oogling her.

I play females in several games, but I only pretended a different gender in Guild Wars for comedic and free gifts effect (Yes, I am a manipulating bastard in MMO's. But so is everyone else in them!).

Mass Effect 2, Guild Wars, Star Trek Online, Halo Reach and one playthrough of Fable 3 not withstanding.

Edit: Ultimately. If I am looking at pixellated ass for hours straight, mind as well be a female ass.

qft. To a lot of male gamers playing DnD, a human male is the last thing they want to play for this reason.

Im a male. Playing a female doesnt phase me at all. In some cases its like the KOTOR games and you play both genders in no particular order because the skinny is that there are differences in the gameplay. In other cases i chose whatever i think is appropriate. appropriate is of corse subjective, maybe my character is an anomaly.

The first DDO toon i capped was a female drow sorceress. Even though the game is set in Ebberron, female sorceresses still have that traditional feel for drow. I had another character that was an elf archer ranger. I made her a female because the male elves are hideous chuds, but the female elves look pretty good.

In DnD or any Star Wars game, i see males as tech geeks, pensive types, or beefy melee types. I see my females as fast paced dexterity based melees (Milla Jovovich); busty, sword-and-board defender types (Arian Barbeau) or firebrand spellcasters/force users.

I'm not so insecure in my masculinity that I can't play a female character, I don't like to because it''s hard for me to relate to the character. If that makes any sense to you...

I do it most of the time.
Why? Because it feels awkward staring at a guy's ass the whole time I'm playing when I had the choice to stare at a girl's ass.

I'll usually make exceptions for beast races like the Argonians from Elder Scrolls or the Worgen in WoW, though.

I feel a little weird, but it doesn't stop me from doing it ever. I occasionally find myself trying to logic out the character's response and it feels weirder when I do it for female characters.
