However I'm almost glad that girls aren't allowed to show their breasts in public. Now before I have my membership from the heterosexual manly man club revoked, hear me out. It would be like if you really liked a particular cereal. You may like the cereal, but if you ate that same cereal every day for breakfast, then you would become used to it and it wouldn't taste as good the thousandth time you ate it. I don't want that normality effect to screw up the way guys see boobs.
That is probably the best argument for having women keep their shirts on in public. I was gonna say something like that, but you said it much better. You may keep your heterosexual manly man club membership.

Because men find tits sexually attractive...

...duh?

I mean, believe me, if a woman decided to walk around with the old fun bags out then its fine by me, but its pretty obvious why they're not legally allowed in a lot of places.
Are there any women who like male nipples, and see them as sexually stimulating? There have to be right? The only thing is is if they are the majority.
Only in the same way that some people get turned on by feet.
Yeah, if that was true then wearing a top would have the same priority as wearing socks...

(Just mentioning this randomly, but it sucks you got put on probation for using sarcasm apparently the mods didn't notice :[ )

Like some other people have said, it's because breasts (at least in most places where female toplessness IS outlawed) are considered sexual. This isn't some arbitrary idea that we came up with either. It's an evolutionary thing. In most mammals the Buttocks serves the purpose that breasts do for humans. It's a display. When humans became bipedal, from an evolutionary standpoint, people needed a display up in front. Therefore, female breasts became sexual.

Now certain cultures have grown out of this OR do not see this as reason to cover breasts.

To be honest, I find it pretty disgusting when men walk around topless in public. Sure, do it in your own home, but something about the naked body of ANYONE in public repulses me. Another issue is that a woman can wear a swimsuit, but the second a man wears anything the same size as their undies, everyone throws up. Men can show off their legs too ladies, sure, it's not pretty, but isn't it a little sexist? What if a man want's a tan, they don't want a dodgy tan-line. Not really fighting for males who want to sunbathe or anything, but partial male nudity of the bottom half is supposedly unacceptable. Legs aren't even remotely sexual, and sure, you can argue they don't call male brief swimsuits "budgie smugglers" for no reason, but you can probably think of it as "Dick cleavage". Not a nice thought, but there are less people who don't like women showing the size of their boobs by wearing tight tops, even though it's basically the same thing just with different sexual parts.

I guess the point I'm trying to get is that, even though women have to cover their top half, men have to cover their bottom half, so isn't it just as equal?

Also. LOL "Dick cleavage".

I don't disagree. However, the male chest is also a sexual display. A wide, semi-muscular chest is a turn on to most women (I don't like super muscular cause they don't look natural). Even a wide chest on a not-in-shape guy can be sexy. Or a skinny, fit chest. ... I think I'm getting off the point again.

My point is, most (straight or bi) women find male chests attractive. They are just as much of a sexual display as boobs are on us.

The only reason we have to cover them up is because the patriarchy wants to keep their sex objects locked up for their personal use and no one else's. I don't mean modern - I mean 4000 BCE, that was the mentality (the same one that invented Harems). The fact that it's continued to modern day is simply tradition. Men displayed their chests to attract women - women hid their chests and only displayed them to their mate. However, the modern world is not a patriarchy (at least not as much) so it's time to get rid of outdated social standards from thousands of years ago and let the twins be free... in 90 degree weather. Otherwise, the bra is honestly more comfortable.

Also, if you are a woman, you'll know how bad it can be if you don't have something supporting your tah tahs.
Thats what was thinking, bras aren't just for cover them up, they lift. If women started going shirtless constantly there be a whole lot more saggy boobs and back problems. Honestly I think most of these people just want to see boobies rather than fairness.

Why, yes, yes there is a bias. And frankly, I don't want to see men walking around with their shirt off. It either means he's a blowhard who thinks too highly of himself because he exercises, or he can't afford a shirt. Or, maybe, he's too stupid and uncivilized to dress himself in the morning.

If you walk around without a shirt, it either means you are lazy, poor, or you're just crying out for attention. Like a five-year old banging a pot.

If a man went topless, they'd just be trying to cope with the coming summer weather.

If I went topless, everyone would judge me as an attention-whoring slut and feel no qualms about harshly and quite vocally judging my appearance.

Women are judged more harshly than men over their appearance, period. Even if, on rare occasion, we're allowed to go topless, we don't get the social acceptance men do.
Why should women go topless when everyone's going to shame them over a lack of a milimeter-thick material?

As much as it seems there is a double standard in torso nudity, I also find that the converse is true when it comes to below the waist. I see a lot more full female nudity in media (of the non-pornographic kind) than I do full male nudity.

Boobs are simply a taboo thing that needs to be covered up, its like women have an extra "nudity area" on their chest where as men only really have one

(this wasnt always the case)

I guess if they were exposed all the time they would lose their "sexyness" somwhat

anyway I dont really have the urge to walk around topless....I mean if you really wanted to go topless why not leave your bra on?

Because men find breasts to be sexually stimulating? Although to my knowledge most heterosexual women find hot shirtless men to be sexually stimulating as well. So hooray for double standards I guess?

It's an annoyance i'd rather we do away with. Most women will still cover their breasts in public anyways, if only to keep them from getting in the way.
How many women want to "motorboat" men's chest? A man's bare chest can be nice, but its a different level with women than men. Personally, Id rather everyone wear shirts.

Because society has, over the course of time, turned them into sexual objects. And if they walked around topless, every male within 20 miles would be staring her down.

But I say let women walk around without tops, because over the course of time breasts will stop being an object of sexual desire, and we can stop making such a big fuggin deal about them.
Yeah, it's a remnant of the days where women had to be ridiculously modest all the time. Anything can be a sexual object anyway.

I think it should be acceptable for women to go topless as men do. When I was a child I thought it was very unfair that I had to wear tops in the water. Also, girls can be insecure about their breasts because they don't actually know what's normal. Most of topless/scantily-clad women they see are models, so they buy bras to mold them into this ideal orb shape and create artificial cleavage. It would be better if things could just be out in the open (no pun intended) you know?

I still think people should wear something covering their genitals though, because it's a matter of hygeine. I wouldn't want to sit in a bench someone with an STI sat on with no clothes.

Look if women walked around topless then; A. I wouldn't get anything done, and B. By the time they were in their 20's their boobs would have the age of a 60 year old. I think ya know what I mean.
Imagine you're a man in, say, the 1800's, just replace topless with "exposed calves". Just think, their calves and ankles would be horribly brown, prematurely wrinkled and unladylike by the time they're in their 20's!

Have you ever been to a nudist beach? You'd probably be aroused for a little while, then you'd get used to it.

Boobs rock, but they wouldn't be so special if they weren't covered up for special occasions.
Very valid point. But then, you could still have that secret awesomeness while making men cover up - the gender bias is still removed.
A man's body isn't nearly as appealing as a woman's body.

Sexual preference regardless, everybody likes seeing an attractive female. Straight women, gay women, straight men and gay men all appreciate an attractive woman, but the same cannot be said for an attractive man.

Some call it gender bias, I call it "who the fuck cares, its the way things are".
Just general bias seeing as you're not taking into account the fact that what people like seeing is inherently subjective. And what people like seeing shouldn't interfere with people's right to dress how they want without getting harassed.

This is probably a stupid suggestion, but suppose we look to the recent "Is provocative clothing an excuse for rape?" discussion? If women wearing provocative clothing do indeed make themselves more vulnerable to rape, then wouldn't walking around topless be even worse? On the other hand, men walking around topless would not. I know it is possible for women to rape men, but its much harder, would require some preparation, and really would be a crime of opportunity. Its doubtful that this is the reason for public indecency laws taking their current form, but it may be a part of it, and could explain the double standard. I'm just musing idly though, its only a theory, I can't back it up.
Yeah, but it doesn't mean a standard should be enforced.

A woman should be able to pull into a mostly-empty car park in a nightclub district alone blasting Nirvana's "Rape Me" and step out of her car in stilettos and a party dress that's barely a dress and still not be raped.

Not saying you're saying it's an excuse to rape, but as standards or dress become more normal, they become less provocative. What I mean is that it's better to allow normative standards to evolve than to draw a line somewhere.

It's a societal thing. It's all about what we've been lead to believe is taboo.

Honestly, I think it's harmless.

Woman have boobs. Boobs are taboo. Actually really its more along the lines of nipples are taboo boobs are frowned upon. It's really that simple. Woman = boobs = bad. Men = no boobs = good.

Sorry to go a bit off topic, but I live in an area where women are legally allowed to go top-"free" should they choose to. It's actually a pretty sexist notion to allow men to go without tops but not allow women to do so, so the laws were changed. Funnily enough, when I see a women going topless, I notice it's only other women who get annoyed or angry with her. Doesn't happen too often though, other than March Break.
Where is this paradise?

One of the main reason I believe men find breasts sexually attractive is because they ARE covered up. Yet we cover them up because men find them sexually attractive. Hm
