Both...at the same time.
Or not at the same time.
Or one after the other.
Or one mounted backwards on the other.

I have a hard time choosing between the two I guess it comes with the situations. In Rainbow Six Vegas, much of the fighting has you close range acting on your feet making a sniper rifles range superfluous at best and a hindrance at worst. Then again, CODS generally open areas are not ideal for a shotgun. So given my choices... I'd have to say, Shotgun I prefer actually looking them in the eye to looking them in the eye five miles away.

I prefer the shotgun, I've never been very good with sniper rifles and I just find it funner to be close to the fight.

I can't use a shotgun well, I always miss because I suddenly get twitchy when something comes up and tries to eat my face/rip my guts out/shoot me in the balls

I'm much better with a sniper though.

It's all about rushing up to someone with a Sniper Rifle, then blowing their faces off at point-blank range.

It all depends on the occasion that I happen to be in. But more often than not I'd rather be sniping than running around like a chicken with its head cut off

Seeing as most of the enemies in Serious Sam seem like master tacticians compared to me, I'd have to go shotty!

'oh look, the other team!' *runs in a straight line at them, going BANG!*

Shotgun.

Aiming is overrated.
The only time you wouldn't need to aim is at point blank with birdshot. And then it probably wouldn't be instantly lethal to a human (just look at the mishap Cheney had.)

No, combat-loaded 12-guage 00 buck only has 8 pellets per shell. You still need to aim. And then the spread'll make the gun pretty much useless past 25-30 yards.

I'll take a rifle over a shotgun, so long as the rifle had back iron sights along with the scope.
Or I could just take the L4D approach and assume every enemy I'm ever going to have is going to charge straight at me with their arms flailing in the air.

I'm glad you think out your weapon choices. My world isn't so anchored in reality. :)

The context is a little important. Are we in a rural area or in a mountain range? Besides. I prefer a knife.

OT: the rifle

There's something more visceral and cathartic about being close enough to catch bits of brain when you blow someone's head off.

For some reason, I've always like sniping better than shotgunning in video games.
