It's just the standard culture clash that comes from a new medium. Punk rock, rock n' roll, Elvis' hips, television, the printing press...all of them have had people attempt to discredit them through 'moral' means. And of course, it failed.

Fox News specifically design their stories to be sensationalist and dramatic. In a way, they're the ultimate trolls: they make thigs up to get a reaction and get paid for it.

It's not rape if you yell: "Surprise!"
I hate this joke so much... I don't find it offensive or stupid, it's just wrong! It makes no sense! GRAWRGHFLRBN
It's because when you yell "surprise!" it is mostly because you have done something for or with a person, without that person's knowledge of it. Like throwing a surprise birthday party. No-one is going to convict you for doing something like that.

Now, sex is something that all parties involved have to agree on, if you don't want any problems. (I know, it's a weird thing to say, but think about it, it's true.)

Ergo, if it was a "surprise", you could never have the other person(s)'s consent now could you? Otherwise it wouldn't be a surprise anymore!

Or something like that...

Playing GTA or Bulletstorm does not make me want to go out and rape people.

Harvest Moon, on the other hand...
See, for me it was always Tetris....
I am now in the process of constructing an analog clock face with the word "Tetris" replacing each number...

Oh, my! Look at the time!
...I'm in trouble now, aren't I? XD

I had to laugh there... I love Viva Piñata and soon after I started playing the game/watching the show, I turned into a furry... Creepy...

OT: I love the way gamers are portrayed in the news! It's so fun trying to live up to non-gamer's expectations...

Example...
Grandmother- "Playing one of those violent video games again? I keep telling you, you shouldn't play those... they mess up your head!"
Me- "No! This isn't a bad game at all... Watch, I'll show you..."
Makarov- "Remember... No Russian"

True story...
Ha! That was the funniest thing I've read in a while! Bet that showed her. :p
I haven't heard her complain about video games again...

"Oh, I'll play your game, Trebek."

Such a silly notion, that we're all becoming rapists. You know what? I think they really meant 'rap-ists'. We all smoke pot and bust some rhyme and get in drive-by shootings.

Playing video games hasn't made me into a rapist. It has turned me into a necrobiblophiliac (giant cookie if you can figure out what that means).

But, to be more serious, the same thing happened with teddie bears, movies, jazz, rock n' roll, women getting equal rights & wearing pants, and rap music. This soon shall pass, but only for ignorant fucks to get all up in arms over something new.
...you have sex with dead books? either that or you read dead books... or the necronomicon maybe?

OT, some gamers are rapists, gamer =/= rapist
Close. (unless I spelled that second part wrong, which I wouldn't be surprised if I did)

Hah! You are so true my friend. Ive never seen so much sensitivity within a community like this before.

But I do totally agree with the point of this topic! We as gamers are pretty much having shit thrown us on a weekly basis now and I'm not sure why. Is gaming and its people really such an easy media to pick-on.
The whole point of games is -they are fantasy- So they can have whatever the f*** they want in them. Just like.. oh lets see... Films and Music and Internet sites...

Guys, could i ask.

What happened to the world?

Im pretty sure people liked eachother once (maybe i played too much minecraft) but why are gamers getting such a bad rap?

The people that never play games choose our laws over them, how do they understand what is needed? anyone ever seen that GTA 4 news clip? (Cue American Newsreader shouting to camera "KILLING HOOKERS WITH DILDOS?!") how many of you actually beat a hooker to death with a dildo?.. ok, thats all of us, but still we arent monsters!

No-one buys Mass Effect and goes out raping women, no, they sit for a moment contemplating the moral choices they made and feeling slightly cheesed off that they didnt have a better ending after that epic boss fight.

what are your views of the gamers portrayal in the news?
I think the issue is mostly that games are the current boogieman to avoid having to address bigger issues, which raise uncomfortable questions with our morality that we don't want to face. Gaming is something politicians can go after to make it look like they are making a differance.

To put things into perspective, gaming is tied to youth violence. However if you look at a lot of incidents where violence is a concern it has to do with things like Immigrants getting upset over the display of their own flag (The US flag) during foreign holidays, because they really don't see themselves as US citizens. The big issue having been Cinca De Mayo with those coming into the country from Mexico, and Central/South America. The reasons stated for the bans being concerns over violence.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/05/07/tensions-high-california-high-school-following-flag-flap/

That's just two links, there are tons if you search. This kind of thing is going on all over California and Texas, and spills out of the schools as well.

We have a rise in violence here conducted by immigrants who don't want to really be Americans. An issue differant from illegal immigration (so don't confuse them). How do you address the issue of thousands upon thousands of people who act like they are Mexicans, Chinese, or whatever else, and act against the US and it's citizens on behalf of their home culture when they have legally became citizens themselves? Right now with the left wing crying about the plight immigrants who can't get into the country (with movies like Machete conveying a message about the issue), trying to address problems like this isn't something that is going to go over well. Left wingers would be considered moral traitors, and right wingers would be blasted in the media like they usually are in such messages. Basically nobody wants to have to address an issue that goes counter to America being the country anyone can come to. Never mind touchier issues like cutting off immigration, at least until the current problems are dealt with, tighter standards in ensuring people REALLY want to be Americans rather than just wanting the benefits of living here (ie you should want to be an American, not just seeking a better life), and of course the biggest nessicary evil, repealing the citizenship of people who have it based on a lack of assimilation, especially after generations.

The problems in society are the result of a LOT of "little" issues compiounded together, all of which have been ignored and allowed to fester because every one of them is a touchy subject. Problems like our "rate of violence" are not caused by one issue like immigrantion, but by DOZENS of issues that are just as touchy and debatable. All of which are effectively political suicide for someone to address in any direct or effective manner, especially seeing as no one issue is going to have a massive effect all on it's own (which is one of the points made when such issues are raised).

Gaming is a good target to blame societal violence on, because it's visible, and has no real political or social representation. By cracking down on games you can CLAIM your doing something, especially if you never quite succeed, without having a bunch of people screaming that your a racist for say wanting to repeal the citizenship of and deport unassimilated immigrants due to the problems they are causing.

I use immigration simply because I've mentioned it before, and brought up the incidents with the US flag before (since the situation upsets me). I could go off on a lot of other similar issues that while small individually, would add up to signifigant action if all addressed, of course they are touchy by our own defined morals which is why nobody goes after them, and people would rotate between calling me some kind of nazi, or argueing how specific things would make little differance (which they wouldn't all by themselves).

We have seen numerous boogiemen over the years used by politicians who want to avoid dealing with the real issues. Video games are just the current one, and something that affects us as gamers directly. We've seen things like rock music used in the past in the same basic way.

Pick any touchy issue that you don't think is being addressed, and understand that video gaming is probably being used as a target specifically so politicians can sidestep addressing it (and tons of other similar issues).

Being a gamer myself I understand my grandma will probably not understand that pokemon is not going to make me go on a rampage, but why fight her.

The sad truth is, when her generation dies, it will all be better and its almost pointless fighting it now.
Hopefully, overall I don't really understand people who don't play games, I mean dedicating yourself to a job is cool but people that are scared or offended by them too much to ever get near them? It's like they're aliens.

I think someone should make a parody game of all the news reports.

And force the news reporters to play it

Would be funny.

I lold at the poll options. It's not unlikely to assume that there might be someone for whom the "yes" button would fit though. Going by US statistics (since this is a US site, and keeping in mind that rape is a crime with a lot of statistical issues, including a lot of unreported cases, false reports and possibly repeat offenders) about 3 in 10.000 are rapists. This site has enough members that I'd say it's likely there are rapists in our midst.

Also, Fox news can suck a fuck, to quote Donnie Darko.

This, kids, is what we call a "rhetorical question". It's a question that both the person asking and those being asked already know the answer to, and is only asked to prove a point. In this case, the point was "Gamers are misrepresented in the media, and we don't like it."

In conclusion, this isn't as clever as you think it is.
