Cyberpunk.

Though both have been driven into the ground by creepy internet folk, at least the cyberpunk movement tends to extol the virtues of sleek, sexy everything, while steampunk is all about goofy as fuck brass dials and unnecessary monocles. Plus, if you search for cosplay from the two movements, the ratio of actively attractive folk versus overweight, creepy folk is definitely in favor of cyberpunk.

Being an American, I base all decisions on which movement, were it anthropomorphized, could I imagine humping.

Cyberpunk, maybe just because there's less of it, I feel like I've had too much steam-punk recently.

I like Star Wars, Star Trek, and many other futuristic-set plots, but can't stand the Final Fantasy aesthetic. Easy choice.

But neither Star Wars nor Final Fantasy explicitly fall into either of these camps...

I mean, I guess some of the FF games have stepped into steampunk territory from time to time (FFVI, most explicitly), but your idea of cyberpunk seems off. Instead of Star Wars et al, think Shadowrun [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuromancer] and, to a lesser extent, the Terminator films.

Edit: Not sure how I forgot these examples, but The Matrix, Blade Runner and Akira are the best Hollywood examples of cyberpunk, FYI.

Steampunk 100%

it seems a lot of Hiyao Miyazakis films have a steampunk flavor, like howls moving castle, which I freaking ADORE, that moving castle is the epitome of steampunk mechanics:

yes, it is indeed that awesome

I'm going to go with steampunk on this one, but only reluctantly.

Cyberpunk inevitably needs to be placed in a possible-future scenario, but steampunk can set absolutely anything, at any time, anywhere: knights, cowboys, ninjas, robots, mechanics, aviators, pirates... you name it, there's a way to steampunk it. Not so much with cyberpunk.

Don't get me wrong, you look at cyberpunk like Ghost in the Shell and Fifth Element and it's fantastic, but it's just not as versatile.

I voted Steampunk, but I do like both quite a lot. Steampunk just has a certain fantastical touch that can make it either good natured and silly, or dark and dystopian, whereas cyberpunk is usually just bleak. I guess what I'm getting at is the nature of one genre is more versatile than the other, at least in my opinion, and that interchangeability of good or evil makes one somehow more superior to the other.

Incidentally, I didn't mean to seem redundant.

This is a cruel poll, but I have to tip my hat to cyberpunk. If only for Shadowrun, the table top RPG version.
