Unless there was a rule regulating facial hair at the moment you joined up OR a clause that allows the owner to add some rules without extra consent, you have no reason to shave it and you must not be expelled or otherwise repressed for it. Since it's a private school, only things you or your guardians have signed have legal power over you.

It sounds like they had no real reason to make you shave it. It wasn't previously against the rules, you keep it well groomed, and it wasn't offensive (the only way I can see a beard being offensive is if you shaved it into a swatzika or so it was giving the finger or something like that). I mean my school had no problem with hairstyles as there were some people like me who just let their hair grow out, both on the top of their head and on their face. People had shaved heads, some had mowhawks, it didn't really matter. Now my school was an American public school so that might be the difference between mine and yours.

Now I might be regrowing my facial hair for a charity event and I want to know what the people of the internet think: Is the school fair in making me shave?

heres a few points to consider
- I kept it neat; I even had a comb for it
- There was nothing in the school rules against it
- the school's motto is: "Where the individual counts"
- Even the head mistress said she liked it
OK if the rules don't have any restrictions against it then don't ever listen to the teacher. But that's a private school and they have more power to expel you than public schools so usually its just a good idea to shave it, don't want to ruin your education because of some damn facial hair. Also it doesn't really matter if the Head Mistress liked it that is just an opinion unless she will stand up for you and help you in the future.

Private school, so you will jut have to deal with it.

Even if it were a public school, you will still have to deal with it if the school decided to do something about it. Thanks to a couple of high profile supreme court cases, the schools do have the authority to restrict free speech if the school feels that having such speech would violate safety.

Hairstyle counts as free speech.
If you don't mind me asking, how does having a beard violate safety?

I think it is wrong that they let you grow it so long without saying anything. I can understand when some schools have strict no facial hair policy for everyone, but it is wrong that they just suddenly decided something like that.

lets think about this.

Have any of our last 10 presidents had facial hair?
Do most CEO shave?

My point is that in high level businesses , lawyer, doctor Astronaut, etc etc these people do not have facial hair.. look at the guy working at 711, engines, teachers, construction workers these people often but not always have facial hair

just trying to point out what society overall and not all the time thinks and feels about facial hair.

Schools are there to teach you not only subject matter but life lessons.

and its a well know fact, if you want a high tier job you most likely will have to shave your facial hair. Until you get well known and build respect and credibility then you can do whatever you want..

so stop complaining and shave your beard...ie or peach fuzz

Really? It's stupid that just because people are in charge, they get to make up rules like that without anyone's consent

how old are you? welcome to life son. full of rules you didnt get to choose, get used to it, grow up, and deal.

If you don't like it, graduate school, start your own and then you can make the rules. Till then stop complaining like the teenage you probably are.

It's a private school, and I have heard that they are uptight about their uniform, but if it is not stated as a specific rule that "No facial hair is allowed" then there is no reason that they should tell you to shave it off. Anyway, most of the professors at my university have beards so it's not like a beard will hold you back in your career.

I fail to see how it's not fair. The school basically owns you as long as you're on school property. Especially private school.

Private School, their rules.

Public School, their rules. (As regulated by the Govt.)

Personally I wouldn't make you shave it, but I don't own the school...so tough cookies.

You look pretty biased there.

Surely they gave you a reason why you have to shave? I'd like to hear that, please...

Yes, because it is a private school. If you don't like it you have three options: go to a different school, don't have facial hair, or try to appeal the ruling.

Just say it's a religious thing.
Most religions have strict anti-shaving regulations (see: Orthodox Judaism, Islam). Your knee-jerk bile is invalid.

they said "Its part of the uniform". thats litterally the only reason they gave me.

And of course Im going to be biased.

I shaved it off a while back without any complaints and have kept it cleanly shaven up until now when Im doing something for charity. all i wanted to know is if people felt the same as i do about it

weird.

my catholic secondary school has never told people to shave off beards. They have told guys to cut off the Mohawk. because it is not an acceptable hair style for a catholic education Which i find stupid.I mean at least 75 percent of my graduating class would not consider themselves catholics. the other were either a different faith or hard core catholics.

With private schools, They are a lot more concerned of the image they are giving to the community. Manly beards are not a problem to me but some people say it is not being hygenic and living in a time where you appearance and cleanliness means more than anything. The school could be doing it to keep with the image they want to show. If you keep it nice and pretty then they can't be too pissed off about it.

I had a problem with that. In secondary school it was popular for girls to wear flats. The vice principle said we needed to wear socks with them. We did not question him because he was the one who would suspend us. we ask the principle one day just as a curiosity and he said there has never been a requirement for shoes to have socks.

yeah we were pissed. My old secondary school had the most relaxed attitude towards the uniform it was not even funny. yet we all bitched about how much it sucked.

good luck with your beard off i shall call it.

As the owner of a well maintained beard, I can sympathize with your predicament. My own beard started when I was 15 and apart from maybe 2 weeks in the last 5 years, I've been able to keep it.

Hopefully in the near future, with our generations taking the reins from those more "sophisticated" beards will become a social norm.

All hail the beard!
