People often claim warriors are far too simple and, as a result, are boring to play. This simplicity is one of the many qualities I enjoy about the archetype. Mages need time to prepare their spells, are vulnerable during casting, and are usually limited by some sort of mana pool. Rogues require the element of surprise via traps and/or stealth and often use a poisoned blade to gain the advantage in a battle. Warriors do not need cheap tricks or magic to devastate their opponents; they need only their weapon of choice.
Furthermore, those of the warrior type are usually the only characters that can don the heaviest of armor. Aside from a flurry of spells, nothing can stop a well equipped warrior; he is essentially an unstoppable killing machine.
I think the best example of such a machine is the fighter from AD&D. Although they gain no special skills, their low thaco, high number of attacks per round, above average saving throws (I forget if this is true or not, somebody help, I'm at work and can't verify this!!) and low AC easily make them the deadliest class.
