My definition of camping is to play the game in a way that, while effective, is not how the game is meant to be played nor fun to play, while forcing other people to also play the game in an unfun way in order to avoid being easily defeated by players using this strategy.

In short, it's an effective but boring strategy that takes no skill to pull off and annoys other players.

Camping is a tactic that is low risk - high reward. The nature of FPS games make camping in long periods beneficial for a number of reasons.

Patience of other players (they'll always come to the camper)
timed matches
spawning weapons/bonuses

The low risk comes from the safety of certain spots on the map. With one point of entry, you will always know if someone comes. The high reward is the surprise attack you can do, and the difficulty in beating the tactic. Campers control the flow of the game because if you want to kill them, you'll have to go there yourself.

I think camping is okay but it can be abused by people who have a really airtight defense. For example a rocket at a doorway making it impossible to kill him until he runs out of ammo. At that point its the map designers fault. Its not really fun to play against because you are forced to use the few counter against camping (wait him out/attempt to slip through his guard). The first counter is boring and takes fun away from the game, and the second requires more work than the camper so it isn't fair/fun.

Agreed, though it depends on game/setting. If you're a long range sniper in BFBC2 and are providing valuable support to either attack/defense (and your team doesn't already have more than enough snipers), then yeah, with a few positions, that's perfectly fine as well (note, I'm assuming you mean camping in the negative term).

Other definition---> BS
Sorry but it is not legitimate. Holding a point, that is fine. But hiding in a corner, and waiting for people to walk by and then kill them is not. Big difference: I can kill someone holding a point as long as I am observant, I cannot kill a camper with normal weapons (except for grenades) even when I am being observant.

My definition of camping varies from time to time. In many many games there is a right time for camping and a long time to camping. A right time for camping would for me would be when when you're playing professionally or in a videogame tournament annual making tactical insurgents and stuff like that in first-person shooters. But if you're playing a game like call of duty: black ops on multiplayer then camping seems like you are just trying to take advantage. If everyone in again was to camp nothing would happen everyone would just be sitting outside of their everyone's view sites and nothing would ever happen again. The game is meant to be played not just sat through. And when you go to a place where people are camping you know one thing is about to happen and that is that even then they are going to die, or you are going to die.

People who camp of ruining the game for others, but at the same time that ruining the game for themselves by taking the fun away from them and others.

Wow, so many people voting for #1, makes me wonder why people hate campers so much. That is an easy mark. I voted 1 and 3. A smart camper moves his camp around the same vicinity every couple kills. This way as people keep running back for "revenge" they assume you are somewhere you are not. This is an easy way to rack up kills. A lot of people can't let it go and will let you kill them 5-6 times or more before they stop coming back.

Keeping to a very small area and not leaving that area at all even when there is no action in that area at all. If you're in the middle of a important location where there is constant fighting, that's not camping that just being smart. But taking some passage off where people only occasionally go and then just sitting and waiting for some sap to come barreling down it unaware, that's camping.

None of the above.
In reality, you can choose to defensively take cover, and wait for an enemy to come to you.
Did that become socially unacceptable a thousand years from now?
Does it make you naughty?

Standing in a corner.

Patrolling a small area make you vulnerable, passing a window, leaving your back/side exposed, etc.

Camping in a back corner doesn't really leave you vulnerable, especially if the killed player has no headset to communicate his death.

I only consider it bad if the other team is doing it. If people on my team are doing it I don't give a flying crap.

If camping wasn't a viable tactic then why do most games offer a Sniper Rifle? I don't understand why people get all upset. Running and gunning is a worse tactic IMO.

Anyways, I picked "I thought camping was just the way to play the game."

i consider campers to be the guys who sit in corners, wait, then kill, move to another corner and rinse and repeat

holding down a position with your team or as a sniper is ok in my book

waiting for some poor noob to walk through a random door while you have a shotgun on hair trigger is not cool imo

There is nothing wrong with camping, I have no idea why people get so angry about it.

If a camper kills you, you get a free revenge kill. That's great. I actually like campers.

Out in the wilderness, it could be a national park, with a tent, fire, food and staying the while possibly leaving in the morning.

Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. The participants, known as campers, leave urban areas, their home region, or civilization and enjoy nature while spending one or several nights, usually at a campsite, which may have cabins.

There's no such thing as bad camping. There's either "fuck you camping" when you get caught in the ambush. Or the "omfgwtfbbq i hate this camper"
Either way the camper wins

It's all in the mindset.

If you KNOW somebody is right around the corner, thinking "If I wait here and he comes around the corner, I'll kill him.", that's not camping.

If you go to the corner thinking "Someone will come through here EVENTUALLY.", THAT'S camping.
This pretty much sums up my thoughts, although I'll still get kinda angry at people for doing the first one.

In my opinion, camping is sitting in one place for the entire game, watching an entrance and gunning down anyone who comes through it. Personally, I don't get annoyed unless the camper happens to be the leader in the game by far.
