My brother chose squirtle so naturally I chose bulbasaur so I could kick his ass when we battled but as we all know it's damn near impossible to beat an older sibling at anything ever.

I've never actually played a pokemon game, but my first pokemon card was a Venusaur.

Charmander... Because I knew that one day, I would have a fucking dragon if I chose him. The first couple of gyms sucked with him, though

By the end I could pretty much kill anything with Slash.

I shall always have a special place in my heart for charmander. Even though defeating brock with charmander always sucked.
Not to mention number 2 gym leader Misty, that was a harder fight with charmander.

Charmander was my first, I never knew Brock and Misty would be the first gym leaders so I thought, "fire breathing dragon, turtle or a little dog with a plant stuck on it .... fire breathing dragon it is."
Yeah but by that time i always had either an odish or a bellsprout so misty usually went down pretty easy.

It was probably Charmander. Pretty sure I had that on Red. Although I remember a second run with Bulbasaur. (because he was awesome in the series)

My first one was Squirtle.

Goddamn, now that I think about it, taking Brock's uber rock-snake down with mere bubbles must've been my first experience of trolling.

Can't help but chuckle at the 5 Chikorita votes though. It's a good pokemon and all, don't get me wrong, but it is essentially just a green phallus with legs..

Charmander. Little did I know that that meant "Hard" in original pokemon. First 2 gym leaders were all but immune to his attacks, or kicked his ass in one hit.

Hated that.

I started with Pokemon Blue (ahhh, the good ol' days), and my first Pokemon was Bulbasaur because even when I was a naive 11 year old, I was still a fan of cold, hard logic. Bulbasaur is strong against both rock and water types - oh, and what kind of types do the first two gym leaders use? What's that? ROCK and WATER types, you say? By jove, I best be picking Bulbasaur!

I never picked Charmander - sure, the whole "fire dragon" thing is cool, but he is just so useless early game; by the time that he actually becomes useful against the gym leaders, there's absoloutely no reason why you can't have a well-balanced team which is effective against any type of Pokemon. Plus, Venasauar was awesome - he was like some sort of enormous Plant Beast which shot lasers; that's fucking cool.

In gold, however, I went with Cyndaquil, because Cyndaquil kicks ass.

I actually didn't get into the Pokemon games when I was younger, but I recently acquired Pokemon Silver and began with a Totodile, who is now a Feraligatr, and I love him to death.

heres some pokie starter trivia for everyone, with the exception of pikachu, ALL starters only have like a 15% chance of being female (i thought it was kinda wierd that that included CHIKorITA)
