The Nobel Committee has severely cheapened the Peace Prize over the past couple decades by making it a political statement.

Why the hell did Al Gore win a Peace Prize...for climate-change speeches? If that didn't deserve a "manwhat", then what does?

This year's award is basically a "first black U.S. president...nice!" award, or a "he's not Bush...sweet!" award. And it's not usually customary to give awards for stuff YOU HAVEN'T DONE YET (which is actually an argument from the crowd that defends the decision).

Note: I hang out on RPG.net's Tangency Open forum, which is one of the most liberal forums on the internet, and about 90% of them are going "um...what?" or "he should decline it".

Besides his attempt at leadership and planning, It was mostly granted to give him the edge in peace talks. So the Nobel peace prize was rewarded to premote peace. Sounds fair.

Wow, first Gore for making a movie (over a Jewish woman who evacuated Jews from Nazi occupied Germany during WWII), and now Obama for being black. Way to suck the democratic d*** Nobel Peace Prize committee. No seriously, you wanna tongue the scrotum a little more?

*sigh*...

This is almost as bad as when Al Gore got his Nobel Prize. This stuff is why I can no longer take that award seriously.

The President has made strides in diplomacy and is in a position to do great good. Because of this the Nobel Proze Committee probably felt that his potential, combined with his leanings, was great enough to warrant merit. But seriously I think any American should be happy that it was one of our own countrymen to achieve this prestigous reward.

Uhh...you DO realize it's not America who gives out the Nobel Peace Prize, right? It's the Norwegian Nobel Committee, with the committee for the Peace Prize elected by the Norwegian Parliament.

And for everyone wondering why they chose him [http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091009/ap_on_re_eu/eu_nobel_peace], to quote the committee:

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

No. They've only just started awarding them for this year this week. Three American women won for Chemistry, and German woman won for Literature yesterday, and they just announced the Peace prize today.
So he won it, because he's a good motivational speaker???

OT: The economy's still shit.

Iran's crazier than ever.

There's no agreement between the left or the right (Both sides are the problem).

He won't send more troops to Afghanistan per generals request,

China's pretty pissed off at us at the moment.

America is no better now than it was nine months ago.

There is STILL a gigantic hole where the World Trade Centers once stood (fantastic memorial by the way /sarcasm)

And North Korea's still competing with hell in the worst place to live contest.

When did the Nobel Committee go completely nuts??? My mother deserves The Peace Prize for her tactics when dealing with Neo Nazis. Which consist of her calling them every type of ******, *****, and ****** there is (she calls them that because that's what's pisses them off the most not because she bigoted, and yes I'm being facetious. I know she doesn't deserve The Nobel Peace Prize).

Give him more time to prove himself worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. Words are useless without action and most of the time he just speaks. Are they peaceful words? Yes, but he has not changed anything. He may change the world and bring peace, or he may make things worse. They should have waited until he made a true difference not just talked about it.

P.S. My mother is a wonderful person unless you're a racist, lazy, ignorant, and/or you hurt her children.
Common misconceptions about the Nobel Peace Prize [http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j1_QF_M_HvZAOpRa9UGcm5CbA-1gD9B7HDR80]:

Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.

More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

So, did you just ignore the fact that the committee specifically mentioned it was Obama's anti-nuke position? This prize is meant to encourage him, which he most definitely needs with all the fools calling him Hitler/socialist/communist/facist/other things that completely contradict themselves and make no damned sense. They are telling him to see his promise through.

Further, y'know what? If your mother truly calls people "******, *****, and ******"? Speaking as someone who can get called two of those three? She's not someone I'd ever want to meet, nor someone against racism (or homophobia or sexism because, after all, one who is truly against any of those things is not going to use that kind of offensive language), nor is she someone I would consider a "wonderful person."

I thought the award was for 'effort' in uniting the world (very vague I know. So sorry people). According to the feed on sky news.

Also, all of your examples are things he supposedly did after the deadline for nominations. He was nominated for nothing, and he was awarded for nothing.
This point is meaningless. The Peace Prize is allowed to be awarded for actions between the nomination and the award. They probably just nominated him in the hopes that he'd do something massive in the interim.

Well in all fairness he's pulling out of Iraq. (And sending troops to the country the US was supposed to be finding Bin Laden in) and there's all that nuclear disarmament stuff too.

Doesn't "nuclear disarmament" sound... Peaceful enough?

I have to believe this was just a brilliant plan to give Obama's administration some steam after being Obama started to fall in the popularity polls, of course he fell in the polls because he didn't do anything, so I suppose now everyone who underachieves can get a major award. Christ, at least Bush did stuff, he didn't do good stuff but he got shit done. (Yes I am a dem, and I really hate typing that bit of praise for Bush.)
It's not his fault, republicans and corporate democrats do everything in their power to counteract and stall our President. Like Alan Grayson stated "Obama has a BLT sandwich tomorrow for lunch they (GOP) would try and ban bacon". Bush signed executive orders during wartime to bypass Congress that practically stripped us of our privilages (They are not rights if someone can take them away). Obama could force his policies through like Bush/Cheney, but chooses not too. Obviously he still has faith in democracy which is more then I can say for myself.

This is probably worse than when Gore won it. Gore just made a documentary about Global Warming, and Obama is just a president...

Edit: actually, nevermind. The Nobel Peace Prize is, and will be always be, a joke because they didn't give one to Ghandi. Why? They were going to, but he died before they could give him one. And they don't give them out post-humorously, which is retarded because of the fact that surviving people could screw up their reputation as peaceful while the dead probably won't

Obuma has apologized to everyone for what americans did wrong; whatever that is. The euros love him for it. Hence their desire to give him an award (now utterly meaningless) and pat themselves on the back ... and smoke some more cigarettes and ***** about americans.

Whoa, seriously? That's pretty cool. Might be a bit early, but I certainly do agree with the reasons for the award, and if it ensures continuity with current policy, so much the better.

Of course, it seems Obama was as shocked as anyone, which is pretty funny. Less funny, people are probably going to blame him for being audacious. Fuck people.

Posthumously.

I can just say that relations with the Middle East and the US are slowly improving, and it's nice that Obama was recognized for his small achievements. It might be too early because he will probably have more accomplished when he's at least halfway through his term, but whatever.

Not that I don't like Obama, but he didn't deserve it. I think if he continues on the path he's on then he will eventually, but come on, he's only what... 10 months into his first term?

I was always under the impression that this prize was given to people who have made large impacts, not people who have made steps towards things that might have a large impact. Yes he's made Russia a bit less angry at us, but North Korea is getting angrier, and not a lot has really changed in society's perspective on them or Russia. I'd understand him receiving the prize if there was a measurable decrease in threat or increase in the mass's trust, but at this point neither are apparent.

I think they jumped the gun on this a bit, like deciding someone deserves an Academy Award solely based on the opening credits of the movie they were in. Sure, the intro may have been impressive, but we have no idea if the middle and the end will keep up the same pace.

US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, selected from a field of 205 nominees.

Now, forgive my ignorance and I'm hoping not to get flamed for this. But what for?

I don't know nearly enough of his political or diplomatic history to comment and I know they don't give out Nobel Prizes for collecting enough cereal box tops.

seriousley, I follow CNN and the political arena, and I do not have a flarking clue why either. I didnt know they gave out Nobel Prizes in the "failing to live up to your word" category. and mind you, I am not even a republican. im a Liberterian.
