this is actually a legit complaint for the 360 tho, you can't ignore the fact that they have REALLY bad hardware.

anyways i'm going to go with some stuff that m$ enjoys doing and that's going for total cost of ownership

the 360

- must pay for good online
- can't have the iplayer because m$ wants it reserved for paid live customers, not the free ones (this is UK only tho)
- hardly ever has free dlc from the store
- have to purchase m$ only hardware, no third party stuff
- wireless costs extra
- can't install other operating systems legally

the ps3

- free online
- free game dlc from the store
- built in wireless
- can use any bluetooth hardware with it
- can install other operating sytems (pre-slim models)
- can use any 3rd part storage device
- easy to upgrade the hard drive, it's in the manual

the other downside to the 360 is a lot of the "exclusives" show up on the pc shortly after. so if you don't have one, you just need a pc and you can play it a couple months later, usually with more content and free dlc
So much for not flaming....

Honestly people, I'm asking for honest opinions. No one has the right to start talking smack about another gamers opinion.

For instance, I don't dislike the XBox as a system, but I do dislike the controller. To me it's uncomfortable and awkward. Also the Xbox has a large catalog of FPS's I can't stand FPS's.
But I am a bit jealous because the Xbox does have a larger catalog of RPG's in it's roster and I truly enjoy me a good RPG.

See everyone....isn't this easy?!?
You probably should have said more about what are you looking for in for entertainment value and passing time and such.

If you have other friends with 360 and are interested in playing online with them definitely try the 360. Yeah you have to pay but it's damn worth it, lots of features and flexibility, unlike the PSN which is just a friends list that shows trophies.

Then again, if you really wanna play a variety of good exclusives go with the PS3. In all seriousness I can't think of any 360 exclusives to recommend most of the time other than Halo 3 since it is the only one I played.

If paying for online is really that big a problem with you then get the PS3.

Also you might want to get the 360 if you don't have patience for the PS3's sluggishness, by that I mean having to inatall crap and tons of updates for every game that takes forever. Also believe me when I say that the PS3 cna really fuck up in framerate and loading, especially in Killzone 2.

Bottomline, you should be able to pick yourself, especially since you didn't provide that much information.
except he's not looking for either, just the fucking hawt topic badges
saying this before it hits 1000 views...

Ahh so he's an achievement wh0re ...xbox it is then;)

Honestly in this day and age where 80%-90% of games are multiplatform and nearly identical the whole "my 'console made by a heartless corporation who view me as a wallet with legs' is better than your practically identical 'console made by a heartless corporation who view me as a wallet with legs' flamewar is null , you should have been there for the C64/Speccy SMS/NES ones.
I'd say chat to your mates (real life and interwebs) ,see what they have , and buy the same one thereby letting you play them online. If you can afford it , buy both.
I've the PS3 myself , solely as most of my mates locally have em,(most of the UKers I know have the xbox so go figure), and other than the SCEE PSN shop being woeful compared to the US one I've found it to be great.

According to your own posts this is a: "Social experiment to see if this will become a flame war, and you fully expect it will probably end with a non-civil flame war"

so if I get this right (Don't worry, I do, it's pretty black and white) you posted a controversial topic as a "social experiment" (direct quote) to see if it would end in a flame war and you: "I have a good feeling this will end in a flame war.".

You:

Posted something to see if it would make a flame war as an "experiment" and you expect it will.

Troll:

Posts something meant to brew controversy (one form of which is a flame war)

Yeah...sounds exactly like a troll to me, and if it posts like a troll, admits it expects a
flame war like a troll, and says "I am not a troll" like a troll, it's a troll.

Reported. (guess what for? Being a troll)[/quote]

...

The sad thing is that, I'm not the person starting the flame war. Its the readers who cant take anything at face value and accept things for what they are. Because so many of you hide behind your online anonymity and are so quick to make extreme comments and it starts a chain because you piss other people off. I could say that I love my mother. That could start a flame war because someone, somewhere would have to make a comment about it being incestual.
So think first before you respond and point fingers for being a troll.
Yes, most people expect this to end in a flame war. Do we WANT a flame war? No freakin' way.
But sadly it's the nature of the beast.

Just a rebuttal on this point.
PS3's were only backwards compatible for a very short time. Pretty much the decision to make PS3 only play PS3 games was a dick move by Sony and I hate them for that.
Money-hunger at its worst.
I think that discontinuing the backwards compatibility of the PS3 has more to do with the fact that Sony realized that the PS2 market wasn't quite dead and less with the fact that they wanted to make more money. At least considering that it became one of the top selling blue ray players.

Anyway, getting back to the OP, like I have time and time again there is only one factor in deciding if you want a PS3 or a 360, "Do you want blue ray?" Well that and maybe "How of your friends owns one."

Disagree if you want, but that seems to be the only real difference.

I'm a PC player, but I have to admit one VERY enticing factor of the PS3 is free multiplayer. Xbox Live is a $15 service for something that doesn't actually DO anything. All the servers are hosted by players, and much of the matchmaking is a part of the game itself. It's a complete ripoff.

I'm not really bothered by Bluray though. To me, even standard DVDs look fine, especially when judging the price difference.

Yes my friend by posting this it shall surely become one.

OT: Most just will just see which has more options suitable to their needs. If you'd like to know these do some research, believe me youl be glad you did. Especially since counsels cost a hefty sum, secondly you should just go on your own opinion since you might be lured by some one elses. Go to a friend try the Xbox, then try a PS3 then buy one. This is what these all these kinds of topics come to in the end.

Yeah, I have a good feeling this will end in a flame war. Honestly this is more of a social experiment. I want to see how well people can follow directions and remain civil even while reading potentially negative criticism about something they enjoy.
Ohh so you're a troll... for Knowledge?

My brain just exploded. Anyway, reported
Ah you ninjad me. But yes trolling for any reason is against the rules. Please read them, their there to keep people from making these kinds of topics. Reported aswel

I can see how you would think I'm trolling. That's not my intention. I don't want a flame war to start in the least bit. I would however like to see a topic like this be discussed in a mature manner without a flame war brewing. So far, everyone is playing along. It's not so bad is it?

He's just trying to see if people can be civil about this. Exact semantics are... well, irrelevant.

I find it funny that you, the one who is reporting to try and prevent a flame war is angrily flaming him, the troll.

Therefore, you've either fallen victim to him or you are just reporting him on protocol.

~EDIT~

Reading all the posts... I gotta say... you were almost... almost right...

*sigh*

OP: PS2 all the way.

I love my PS3 and all, but... my PS2 has Okami.

I've poured over 150 hours into that game.
I am just voicing my opinion, Maybe he deserves a little flame, the point is, he's a total troll, I may be making a little flame, but I am not setting the stage for a giant flame war between a bunch of people like he has. I am simply making an argument with him.

(NOT A FLAME WAR!!!)
Well that changes EVERYTHING!

Thanks for pointing that out, I'm sure the anonymous denizens of the internet will be COMPLETELY civil about this now.

EDIT: BTW, I like the 360 better because I think its online support is better than PS3's to the point where even though PSN is free, I would rather pay for Xbox Live, I also like the games that come out for the 360 more, a good number of them have been making their way to the PS3 lately, but who wants a game a week/month/year late? Those two reasons made me choose 360 (also the PS3 initial price tag was kind of a ***** slap).
So you would rather buy a cheaper system but pay more in the long run? In just two payments you have already payed more than a 120gb ps3 slim would cost.

(Just based off info I have quickly searched for on the net, so I am not sure if it's accurate)
Yeah I would, I really don't mind the extra cost, its more than worth it to me.
Okay, thats your choice.

I read some were that the ps3 has better hardware (I am not sure if it's true or not). In the long run aren't you paying more for a system that will eventually fade in comparison to the ps3?

I know with the ps2 it started off as good and the games just got better and better, so I am assuming it will happen to the ps3 but the xbox may only get slightly better.

Of course I could be totally wrong.
The PS3 probably does have better hardware in some respects, and everyone keeps saying the PS3 is the choice for those looking ahead to the future, but no matter how good hardware is, 360 has the games I really want to play, now, and since when has a domineering trait in gamers ever been patience?

As a psycho ADD guy, I can officially say:

SCREW PATIENCE!

Plus, if the PS3 waits too much longer to start tapping into their potential, companies will lose interest and won't be there to make games for them when Sony finally decides to go for broke.

I am not bashing the PS3, but I do like the 360 better, I see a ton of potential in the PS3, but not if Sony keeps up its "admit no fault, wait indefinitely" business strategy it seems to have employed.

all true
but the ps3 i have is a launch ps3,
so i am comparing the ps3 i have to the xbox 360 elite i have.

still ps3 is better
I've played both extensively and, exclusives aside, it pretty much comes down to what controller you prefer and which GUI you like better. Although graphically the xBox seems to hold sway over the PS3, they're basically on par with each other.

Ummmm you just backpedaled my point there mate.

Pretty much exactly what I meant. Sony stopped their initial plans of backwards compatibility because the PS2 was still making money. They knew that the PS2 market was strong at the launch of the PS3 - they'd be idiots to not realise their own sales figures. Sony wanted to cash in so they halted backwards compatibility and started manufacturing more PS2 consoles so people would buy a PS3 and if they wanted to play PS2 games, they'd need to buy a PS2 as well.
Think about it - so what if people could play PS2 games on a PS3, the developers of the games aren't losing out, people are still buying their software. Sony just got greedy and wanted to cash in on a last-gen market they'd already had more than their fare share of.

Pretty selfish imo and very Sony of them.
Playstation is the only Sony product I own, I can't stand their other products - overpriced and glorified pretty much sums up Sony.

I am a PS3 fan. My 360 has been collecting dust for about a year now.

The reasons for this are as follows:
- Free online play
- I have been groomed to love the PS controller since it's lowly days on the PSX.

With most games going multi-platform, I have no real reason to dust off the ol' Box. Until Mass Effect II comes out, that is.

I have both but my 360 logs far more time turned on. There are a variety of reasons. First, most of my friends have a 360, and as such if I want to play games with them (as I tend to do) I'll have to use the same system. Second, I dislike the controller in general. It works fine for many games, but killzone 2 convinced me that someone in the industrial design deparment at sony has a sick sense of humor. That game physicall HURT to play for any length of time.

There are lesser reasons of course. I like achievements and yet don't care about trophies for example, but these are minor concerns in the grand scheme of things.

Official reason: they couldn't make it work and still be cost effective. My perceived reason: we're all dopes who will buy decade old games again if someone gives us a chance (I've purchased doom five different times now).

Im a PC player, but im getting PS3 this xmas. The price aint that high people, and 360 will eventually cost you more with the Xbox live subscription. And i like PS3 games more, 360 mostly has Halo and Gears of War. The only game id really like to play is GTA IV Episodes from LC, and maybe Crackdown. PS3 has Uncharted, LBP, MGS4, God of War, inFamous and those are not just shooting games

What are these games? I have just looked down the list of xbox exclusives (although some were shared with the pc)and I think none of them are "WOW, I wish I had a 360 for them games" with maybe the exception of GoW and halo series. It's a genuine question, what are these games you want to play NOW, that you can't get on another system?

Like you, I am not bashing the 360, sometimes I come across the wrong way (it's a curse). I like to break everything down into it's simplest form.

I have had a playstation since I can remember from psx to ps3 but before I bought a ps3 I read about which was going to be better, in the short term the 360 was cheaper and had better games but in the long run the ps3 is alot cheaper and will have better games.

I think it just takes awhile for playstations to gain momentum, they start out a little sluggish but slowly they start turning out better and better games.

So, if the ps3 has better hardware, it will be able to go above and beyond the 360, am I right?

Can you crush a lobster? Seinfeld wooooo!

OT: I prefer the PS3 as it's a complete entertainment system; it acts as a computer, a mass storage device that you can play anything from, free online, HDMI capabilities, blue-ray player, gaming device, etc. It's pretty much the one system you don't need to buy a bunch of accessories for to utilise everything (see: Nintendo Wii).
About time someone got the reference! :D

Honestly, I went for the ps3. The blu ray player is nice, needs no extra unlocking to play dvd's at launch. I have full internet, not just xbox live, Microsoft is not trolling my game play habbits, and really the hardware is nice and reliable. I have yellow lighted, but eh cheap fix and it too 2 something years to happen.

The games are fun, look good on both systems, just tailor to what games you want, rpgs and the like. Don't listen to rumors, expect everything to be multi platorm in the future save a few titles, and those will hit pc in times.

I went 360 because more of my friends have one, I like FPS and I have no qualms about paying for online. I wasn't keen on the controller at first since I was used to sony's, but it's grown on me. Plus I like Halo.

And achievements. I really, really like achievements. There just isn't the same level of whoring to be done for trophies.
