Starry Nights. It shows the abstract forms that take place inside our heads and communicates with us in a weird way. But I'd rather save Mozart's musical genius.

Las Meninas by Valasquez is one of the most important historical works for painting today. It is sometimes cited as being the root of modern painting. I would be inclined to save something along the lines of that.

Jokes aside: I voted for Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali but I had a [short] struggle deciding between that and Starry Night by Van Gogh.

Of the list, I would say the Chapel.

Depending on your perspective, it can be seen as either a great contribution to Christian art or an insult to the religion.

Clearly it's gotta be this fine work...

Of the list I voted for The Persistence of Memory. Anything Dali gets me.

See, I read the question as "Which piece of Art would save YOU from destruction." and found the poll immensely more deep and personal then in reality it is. The prior question would force me to pick musical art.

If I limit myself to art on the list to avoid picking music or games it would almost be a tie between "Starry Night" and "Persistence of Memory" due to Dr.Who's most recent season... But Dali still wins.

This is a far more difficult question for me then it is meant to be... I couldn't necessarily continue living without more then one piece of art in my life so picking ONE to save doesn't work. I depend far to much on Visual, Musical, Video, and Interactive media to keep me going.

If I go back to which one would go above and beyond towards saving me. I would have to say perhaps "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead.

If it weren't already destroyed I'd save Casper David Frederick's Cluster graveyard in the snow. Damn WW2.

From the list, probably the Mona Lisa. I'm not fond of abstract art and the Sistine Chapel never appealed much to me.

Earth, regardless of religion or evolution, the whole thing was created either way, and if you ask me its not only the oldest, but the most valuable piece of art ever aswell!

Art is pointless. Destroy it all. Video Games are not art.
Newsflash, Fight Club fanboy! Art isn't pointless! It's actually one of the very very few things that sets us apart from the other animals.

The School of Athens by Raphael

The sheer amount of detail and hidden meaning is amazing.
You know, I studied this once in art history. Raphael wasn't supposed to put himself in it, but I think he's somewhere on the steps.

The music of Bach.

Tocatta and Fugue if only one piece.
This.

But if forced to choose between painted works... I'd be unable to decide between the Sistene Chapel and the Mona Lisa.

Other: None. The lack of art in the world would prevent inspiration from previous pieces of art. Originality would expand.

All this makes me think of is:
"I wanted to breathe smoke. I wanted to burn the Louvre. I'd do the Elgin Marbles with a sledgehammer and wipe my ass with the Mona Lisa. This is my world, now. This is my world, my world, and those ancient people are dead."

If we're talking destruction, like, it's the end of the world and I can only save one piece of artwork in my small escape vehicle, I would argue a painting or statue would be too big and cumbersome to take with me. I'd rather bring a book, music, or maybe even a game... you know... other things that can be considered art.

As it stands, however, I would probably bring a katana. Why? Because a well crafted katana is just as beautiful as any painting, perhaps more so! And it also serves a purpose if we're in a apocalyptic scenario. /thread
