I dont think Dragon Age should be on that list. Its too new. It hasnt influenced anything yet. It will probably influence the next decade of RPGs but they are still making DLC for the game! The best choice would probably be Final Fantasy. Class based gameplay has been a staple in the rpg realm for a long time. Although to be fair that was used back in D&D

First ten replies read, It is sad to see people are just voting for their 'favorites'. That's not what the poll is asking.

Oblivion, on that list, is my favorite. But I didn't vote for it, because I don't feel it's 'redefined' the genre by any means.

For that honor, I voted Final Fantasy. I've only played a couple of them, but the RPG elements in them just feel very... refined.

The choices for this question of the day are dumb. Most of the titles on the list are new games that haven't even had the time to influence other games yet.

The list should read more like this:
Ultima
Bards Tale
Might and Magic,
etc.

If we're going to have "Questions of the Day", at least put some thought into it.

Man, I'm with almost everyone here. There are a whole lot more influential games than the ones listed aboves.
(I'm glad Dragon Quest made it on the list, though.)

I chose Neverwind, as it is based on D&D. And it (and all the versions of it) was the first proper RPG, the one that intruduced all the things that now seem mandatory in RPG's like character customisation, shitloads of weapons to choose from and abilities/skills whatever you want to call them. So Neverwinter would seem to be the game that has had most influence on the genre.
While Diablo 2 didn't introduce character customization, it did introduce vast amounts of weapons and the abilities/skills you speak of long before NWN did. And many would consider D2 to be an RPG, despite the nitpicking folks often do with the genre. And in the same year NWN was released, Morrowind featured it's own character customization abilities. I'm pretty sure the devs at Morrowind didn't pick up NWN and decide to completely rewrite the character creation scheme. By the by, 2002 was the release year. That seems like a long time ago that Morrowind and NWN came out, but it really isn't...D2 was 2000.

I voted Final Fantasy. It has always had a huge impact on both JRPGs and WRPGs, and will continue to do so until it lives up to it's name.

Baldur's Gate? Dungeons and Dragons? Curse of the Azure Bonds? Elder Scrolls? Fallout? Wasteland? Ultima? Chainmail? Warhammer? Dungeon Master? Dungeon Keeper? Gothik? Bard's Tale? Might and Magic? Super Mario RPG? Pokemon? Wizardry? Twin Kingdom Valley? Planescape: Torment? Rogue? Moria? hack? Everquest?

Is there just a whole chunk of basic history missing?

Actually no, Colossal Cave, because you might get eaten by a grue.

Just 72 odd games...that's closing in on Mario's number.

I said other. Final Fantasy did very well especially with FF VII, but Baulders Gate and Icewind Dale set the standard for real time action RPG's something that did not come till way later for consoles and now almost all RPGs are real time. The story lines in the Baulders Gate and Icewind Dale series were epic too.

I never played Dragon Quest, but it did not seem like an RPG to me.

Zelda is not an RPG. It is Action Adventure hands down. No leveling system. No epic storyline. Just you and your sword and a couple of gadgets to do the same thing over and over. Puzzles and Princess Zelda.

Oblivion is too new to count IMO Morrowind would of been a better choice seeing how that set the standard for Sandbox RPGs which I am getting really bored of now. After spending two months beating morrowind and still have not completed Oblivion. Its just too open.

Dragon Age again is too new, but you would not have DO if it again was not for Boulders Gate and Icewind Dale as its predecessors and the same goes for Neverwinter Nigths.

Well, this is a tough question. I mean what the hell is a RPG these days? Go check out stolen pixels Rollie the Roleplayer. Mass Effect is in the same genre as Diablo and Pokemon. And the answers provided with this poll are stupid. Dragons Age? That game came out two years ago? This is probably the dumbest poll escapist has put out.

I'd like to change the Oblivion option to the elder scrolls series, there WERE other *shakes fist*.

But yeah, I vote that. It's what broke away from the traditional RPG format, and brought it to the mainstream.

Oblivion?

That's silly.. it was basically Morrowind with better graphics and a genereally improved interface.

Baldur's Gate did a lot to revive the rpg genre by making the really complex rule system comparatively easy to understand - without being as buggy as fallout.

probably final fantasy or baulders gate. i dont even know why dragon age is up there. that game has had almost no influence (so far) i mean... how many rpgs have been released since then? dont get me wrong, its a absolutely fantastic game. one of my top 5. but its too early for it to have an influence.

Other.

Ever played the old D&D games put out by SSI? They were the forerunner for games such as Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Dragon Age.

I'm sorry, when did Final Fantasy become an RPG? I've always thought of it as a cinematic adventure game. I'm gonna have to say Fallout series on this one. Top notch games, and still popular a decade after release. That, or almost anything from Bioware.
