Political correctness should definitely come AFTER serving justice lol
THEN people can tiptoe around seeming racist
Precisely. But unfortunately for society, that's not the way things are.

My Mother is a lawyer and while I was home last she told me about a case she had recently taken.
Her client was a muslim woman who had immigrated with her husband last year for buisness. Now in the muslim faith some groups and people have interpreted the Koran to say that it is allowable for a husband to beat his wife and as such there are no laws against it in most muslim countries. Now this woman had been married to this 40 year old man when she was 14 and upon moving to the US she was completly ignorant of the laws here and as such did not know that in the US there are laws against spousal abuse here. A few months later she filed for a divorce and now wants her husband to serve punishment for his abuse. She had gone to the police and another lawyer before hiring my Mother and when she told them that she was being beaten by her husband they replied with "Well thats part of your religion isn't it? You just have to deal with it."

I personally think that is ridiculus and belive that if you immigrate to a country and become its citizen you have to follow its laws that protect the rights and safety of others, even if your religion says otherwise, but what do you think?
You should read Kierkegaard, he deals with something like this in "Fear and Trembling" *spreads existentialist propaganda*

Religion is the reason humanity is going to kill itself off. Think about it, if there had been no religion in te first place, this wouldnt have happened. Religion is just a form of using fear to control you. I bet the guys who wrote the bible would be laughing at us right now. Religion was a practical joke that went too far, and now people are getting beat, and killing each other over it.

I know this is three pages back in the thread, but that isn't political correctness - that's cultural appeasement. Okay, I may have made the term up but political correctness means that when you refer to a group of people, you use the "correct term" and not offensive slurs. Giving someone concessions because your culture's engulfing theirs is a whole different can of worms and when you lump the two things together you sound like someone who just wants to shout the word "******" without being looked down upon.

My view is: In delicate situations discretion is important; overcompensating for social anxieties isn't very discrete.

That sounds completely biased in almost every way, im gonna guess that either you have proved without a shadow of a doubt that there is no higher power, or are a opinionated troll. So... which is it? :D

Those horrifying exorcism camps that Christian groups here in Australia run? So, so wrong, I can't even begin to talk about it.

Wait, what? What are they doing in Australia? I... need more information. Help?

I didn't mean to troll, I just get really forward about topics such as this. I am opinionated to a point, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant. I've learned all I can about certain religions, and I can't bring myself to believe in a higher power. I am openly atheist, but I'm dating a Mormon, a brother to a Christian, and a son to a Bhuddist. I am willing to hear all about religion, and let you try to convince me its real, but I can't pretend to believe in anything but concrete evidence.

Religion is religion. Of course, if you choose not to believe in it... it doesn't affect you.
Other people can still affect you, but then that becomes a law problem.

If she doesn't believe in what the Koran says than why does she call herself a Muslim?

When you move to a new country and become a citizen you obey its laws. That lawyer was just incompetent.

Probably has something to do with the fact that many religious people do not follow holy context 100%. She very well might believe in a higher power, and be extremely spiritual, but doesn't agree with many things of the Quran. How can you agree with something that infringes on your life? Apparently forced married and beat? Why would you not objectify to that?

Also. Islam is extremely difficult to break away from. Under authority of her husband, denouncing her religion would probably worsen her situation.

It is biased, but religion was just another way of control out of fear. Religion used its power as law throughout time, preying on the beliefs many people shared, such as a higher power.
It either was its intention, or became warped over time, but there is no denying that it is a means of controlling others.

Here's a little known fact. A circumcised penis loses a lot of its nerve endings, and thus sexual intercourse isn't as pleasing for the man AND the woman. The foreskin is pulled back during intercourse leaving a "speedbump" that tends to increase pleasure in the woman. Studded condoms were essentially invented to do what the foreskin already does during intercourse (increase pleasure).

Another often unknown fact amongst people is that you do not need to be circumcised to become a Jew.

Most people seem to think we don't lose much when we get circumcised, yet we do. Also the reports that you have a decreased chance of getting sexually transmitted diseases when you are circumcised are offset by other case studies that have come to the complete opposite conclusion. And let's face it, you should be wearing a condom so the whole argument is moot.

I do not want to force my child to have a circumcision, that will be his choice once he can make it on his own (yes you can get the procedure done as an adult). It is also a known fact that newborn children tend to be hypersensitive to pain, and anesthetics are often ineffective. In fact it has been shown that children who "fell asleep" during the procedures did not fall asleep due to drugs, they passed out due to the pain.

On the subject of genital mutilation in general I think it's a horrible act. People are essentially being forced to have parts of their sexual organs cut off.

it sounds to me like they didn´t wanted to get involved in "religious" affairs

seriously, you could end up with a bunch of "pro beating" people from that religion just for one case

I am not in favour in any way with beating anyone but it does rise the question if you have the strength as a lawyer to fight a religious belief.

No one is asking you to belive in it but bashing it and blaming religion for all of humanities problems is a little ridiculous.
Im pretty sure that without religion the people who twist it to serve their own sick needs would just find another way to do so.

Seperation of church and state. Though i think at least one american state still has a spouse beating law on the books; "it is legal t beat your wife with rod that is not thicker than your thumb", can't remember the state.

Also do try not to get your mother in trouble client confidentiality is reasonably important.

I am a Christian and a firm believer in God's plan, however in a democratic society one should always follow the law, even if they disagree with it. Ideally the laws should not conflict with what you believe but if they do then you should follow the law, if you do not then you should face the proper punishment.

Well to be honest, Religion gave them a massive excuse to commit mass Genocide in thousands of battles and countless wars.

The two most prominent slaughters that come to my mind are the crusades and Cortez.
