Dude it's not that its all whining about girls and how rich they are! *rap* it's how F-ing easy it is to do crap like that! I mean give me a word and I could rap about it! It's not hard. Now make a rock song. Yeah, it's WAY harder. That's why I hate New rap. 2pac and Biggie smalls 4 ever.

Still, one must ask: Why do inferior musicans seem to prosper?
Same reasons Transformers made it's money back. The public want what the public get.

Even if you really really enjoyed it, can you honestly say it's the best film this decade? Because that's what the box offices figures will return.

Anyway, I'd rather listen to someone yelling about their girlfriend than some idiot rhyming about hoes, guns and money. Bring me your hip-hop version of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen or Iron Maiden, and then we'll have a test. :)

Metal fan here saying, just ignore what everyone else thinks! Most of my friends hate Slayer, and this doesn't even remotely bother me.

Also, rap isn't as bad as that shit you get in clubs, you know what I mean, it's just two beats all the way through with a occasional sound effect.

Said it before and 'l say it again, i consider to be music only the string of sounds made with INSTRUMENTS, not computer-generated zzzdringz. Also, rap is the bastardization of a nice genre called hip-hop, in my humblest of opinions.

With no business whatsoever with the thread, am i the only one who notices the irony of rock?
( now i'm getting into race demographics, don't shoot me, i am not racist, and this is mostly generalisation) A genre invented by the afro-americans which is now caucasian (whities) mainstream( sorta) and almost deserted by it's makers? It's a bit weird.

Well at least jazz and blues is still pure as a saphire....

Just to note, i am my old school's designated head-banger.... dunno bout highschool though

I just hate the sound of it, and you are supposed to enjoy music, and if it has a political message, all the better, but I am not going to listen to something because they make a statement.

Completely dodging the unfair generalizations and the stab at rock and roll, I will say this: if you're looking for a rap/hip hop group that wasn't all about bitches, hos and money, listen to House of Pain. Yes, they did more songs than just Jump Around!

Not only do they occasionally refer to themselves as "descendants of Odin with titanic skill", one of them is Irish, one is German and one's from Latvia. Oh yeah, and they're all skinny white guys. That's about as non-rap as it gets.

I just really, really dislike the music in itself. Not the lyrics. But good old HIPHOP is good, though. No, I don't look up rap artists, the ones I've heard are the ones that are played on the radio, and are obviously the most popular ones.

On that topic title, I have this band called Tool in my playlist, and I can't think of a single one of their songs that contain any form of love. Same goes for Rage Against The Machine, mostly for Rise Against and mostly for System of a Down too. But I guess some mad rock fanboy will assault me and say "that's not rock, that's metal, whine whine whine" now.
I thought I was the only one who listened to Tool and thought "this sounds like a live jam session at best". Or who listened to Rage Against The Machine and genuinely could not tell when one song ended and the other began.

Long story short, let's start a rock band.

It's funny, how you keep talking about good or bad music, when all of your arguments are lyrical. I find that hypocritical.
Wait? What? Hip-hop was based off lyrics, that's mostly the point of it, I never said lyrics are the be all and end all of all music. My favourite song in the world is an instrumental...
A song is based on two things; Music & Lyric

Please don't argue about good/bad music, when using lyrical arguments. Either make it clear that it's a poetical discussion, or throw some musical arguments to prove your case... If you have any...

You can say; "I like this song, because the lyrics are great", fine, but don't say; "I love music, especially lyrics...". - Okay, that was a bit extreme, but I fucking hate when people seem to forget the most important part in music, the music.
The way the lyrics are delivered and how they interact with the music is also part of the music: I think you'd be hard pressed when talking to find someone who says "I love music, especially lyrics..." who isn't also referring to the way the lyrics are delivered or how the lyrics enhance the music and vice versa.
You talk about messages. That has nothing to do with music, to any extent.

EDIT: I am so sorry, I thought you were the 'tron dude.

I have mentioned before, that the lyrics have value, but not hidden ones. Some words work better than others, as to they sound different.

Generalisations, they don't help anything.

I've noticed there's alot of hate here for hip-hop, it really gets on my nerves when I see people saying, "All rap/hip-hop is is black men talking about their bitchs, hoes and money", yea it is, in the same way rock music is men with half their face covered by hair crying about their ex girlfriend.

Let's be honest, the majority of the albums that make it to number one these days are bought by 12 year olds who don't know what file sharing is. You may personally not pirate music, but millions do, this is proven by the fact that now number 1 takes 500,000 albums sold, when before it was a couple million. Would you really judge all music by what a 12 year old kid thinks is good?

There is so much good music out there and the majority of it doesn't see the charts, so condemming a whole genre and it's fans because 50 Cent sucks is just unfair, the majority of people in the world of hip-hop hate 50 Cent just as much as the next guy. You should look at some of the real stuff before you start spouting off about how bad whole genres are. This post goes out to hip-hop fans who hate all rock/metal aswel.

Personally, I grew up listening to stuff such as Guns N' Roses, Metallica and U2 to name but afew, then as I got older I found hip-hop. I never understood what people meant when they said "It has no meaning", as whenever I want some educated music with a message I go for hip-hop, whereas whenever I want something fun to chill out to I go for rock, the majority of the time atleast. There is some rock bands that focus on message such as System Of A down, while some hip-hop is good for relaxing to, such as Nas.

So let's not focus on hate, let's speak about what we like about our favourite genre of music and maybe post an example, so everyone can enjoy the best of all worlds.

I'll kick things off with some hip-hop I like, my favourite hip-hop artist, Immortal Technique. His songs really opened my mind up to different ways of looking at the world and the realisation that the person telling me what I have to do with my life can be trusted no more than the person living next door to me. He is also very booksmart and has led me onto read about many interesting people and events.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP1exQ8tcUc

Suppose I'll do one for rock aswel, best go for Sonic Boom Six, they're a really fun and original band who also give some social commentary, they're pretty new at the moment and really could claim some more fans if they signed to a major label, which they have chosen not to do, but check them out.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iGetOXVJGk

So, everyone, go ahead, you will not be judged.

Also, do you agree with my first paragraphs? In that people do not open their ears enough and speak about hate without really knowing what a certain genre is all about.
If 50 sucks so much he wouldn't have made more than $100 million off his career. SOMEONE must have liked him for that amount of money to amass. You can't argue with the figures.

Can you name one pop / hiphop musician who would sing about something more than himself? Of course you cant, because that music is for idiots with no musical talent.
Wow.. Strong words.. Sorry to say but you are wrong. Express yourself by NWA is the first thing that pops to mind as well as Where is the love by Black Eyed Peas. Hip Hop started as rebellion music, just like Punk, so there is a lot strong stuff out there. I can't defend a lot of the stuff that is around in the pop charts now but you can't judge an entire genre on the pop stuff. I feel like I am repeating myself.

Also - What is wrong with people liking simple pop songs anyway. I for one love a fair bit of it, some people just want to dance.

I'll go listen to my Iron Maiden.
Maiden! WOOOOO!

On topic: I agree that generalisations don't help.

I also grew up listening to Guns N' Roses, as well as Iron Maiden, the Blues Brothers and ACDC. While I agree with the idea that there will be at least one song someone may like within a defined genre, I also think it all falls down to individual taste. If you don't like a genre, don't listen to it, rather than just writing it off as "rubbish". To be honest, I'm happy listening to the bands I just listed, as well as metal bands like Trivium and Disturbed. I don't like rap, but I'm not going to say the whole genre is completely worthless.
