I've been playing Red Dead Redemption a lot lately, and some of the shit is just creepy. I gathered a bouquet of flowers for this kindly old man's wife. They had been married for 50 years, and he wanted to do something special for her. I gather the bouquet and give it to him. He asks me inside for some tea. When I get in there, his wife his a decaying corpse. No eyes in the eye sockets. And they guy kept treating her as if she was alive. Said she wanted to drive in an automobile. I actually felt pity for the old man, but was nonetheless disturbed.
Im guessing thats supposed to be really dark humor, but it sounds like it was a little too dark for you. Cant blame you.

No, I got the humor. I really did. I sort of guessed it up front and smirked a little when I got it right, but he was so in love with this...corpse. You could tell in his voice he really didn't think she was dead. There was so much happiness and love in his voice. It made me sad a little bit. Just shows how good voice acting does a great job of moving the player.

Here's a video so you know what I'm talking about:

Listen to the earnestness in his voice.

Any minute from Amnesia. ANY.
Definitely this. Amnesia is one of the few games that has been able to actually scare/unnerve me so badly. It's quickly becoming a game I won't be able to finish, unless I don't allow myself to become taken in by the game (headphones off/lights on.) It's just so.... ugh, every noise, every creek every damn gust of wind in that game just creeps me out.

Aside from that... not much aside from the occasional startle. RE4 had a couple things that stood out though. Anybody remember the random wiggling bag sitting in a dumpster? It never did anything... It just... laid there wiggling in the same spot. I kept running back to that room to see if anything happened to it.. It just felt like something bad would happen. The regenerators weren't too bad,it told you how to kill them. But the refrigerator man scared the crap outta me the first time.

Oh, and, can't forget finding the giant lake fishy for the first time... I just needed some food :(

You are opening a row of lockers looking for stuff in that old school, near the swimming pool, and all of a sudden there's a 'corpse' in one of them. After you get over the shock of discovering him, he suddenly starts talking to you....yeah.

I've only actually played about an hour or so of Amnesia myself...me and two of the other guys I share an apartment with took it in turns and played on a rotation, but after a while two of us were too scared to play any more and the one of us just finished the whole thing :p

Let's pull out a fun little mind-fork called The White Chamber.

Indie game by a group who's gone their seperate ways by now called Studio Trophis. Starts out with you in a coffin, goes downhill from there.

I swear, that corridor still creeps me out. You'll know if you play (or have played) the game
Yes. Yes I do know.

BLARGH.

"I only wanted to help him..." MOST TERRIFYING LINE EVAR.
"Great, now i have a severed human leg" :p

Honestly wish Studio Trophis hadn't gone under, was really looking forward to For The Game

The Collector's ship in Mass Effect 2. Just... everything about it was so damn wrong, it's one of the few times I've gotten scared.

And because it is the only time I have ever screamed from a game (and the first time I screamed in years), special mention goes to playing Left 4 Dead 1 on Dead Air at two in the morning, realizing you accidentally set it on Expert, and there is a Witch blocking the crane/dumpster/whatever controls.

Then someone sneaks up behind you and goes boo. :|

Resident evil 1. The entire game until you reach the lab.

Oh the mansion. The freaking mansion! Still have nightmares about it.

The encounter with the Brood Mother in Dragon Age: Origins. Obviously they're incredibly grotesque, but it was just as freaky to find out just how the darkspawn are made.

The torture scene in Kane and Lynch 2 is pretty unnerving too. Mostly because of Lynch's girlfriend.

You see now im very scared, im on the first few missions of HL2 and people are telling me the ravenholm part is scary. And i dont do scary. i mean fuck the first zombie scared me.

just how bad is it exactly?
It's a tricky question. I don't see Ravenholm as really being all THAT scary, so much as somewhat scary in an awesome way. It also doesn't leave so much to the imagination that average players will be horrified at length.

If you "don't do scary", though, do expect to jump a little when the undead break into the energy drinks xD

Actually, I think I might call it more "awesome" than "scary", though it has heaps of both. You'll understand why I mentioned the former attribute pretty early on in the mission!
fuck it. Im going to just man up and do it. We cant live sheltered lives forever.

THIS.IS. SPARTAAAAAA!!!!!!

wish me luck guys XD

I have to agree with Thief, Stalker, Vampire: Bloodlines, System Shock 2 & Amnesia which have all already been mentioned.

So here's one that hasn't been: SWAT 4 had a couple freaky missions, missions made all the more frightening because unlike every other game mentioned, you've not in an alternate dimension or a fantastical universe, it's not sci-fi or even horror, but based fully within reality. You're a cop taking down some sick bastards... and in two levels in particular of SWAT 4, they are sick bastards indeed.

One level deals with a serial killer that targets young women. You find him and his... erm, dungeon where he, well... has fun with his prey. It's disturbing stuff, but not nearly as disturbing as a later level where you break down a death cults doors. Lets just say there's something in the basement which makes you really, really, REALLY want to just gun down every suspect from that point forward. They deserve to die, kill em all!

Although I didn't play this game sequence I saw it on youtube, the scene in Quake 4 where your character is being turned into a Strogg is VERY creepy. the blood soaked walls, cutting your chest open, your legs being cut off by a huge circular saw, the implant being forced into your head, that has to be the creepiest scene in gaming
