+1 For Silent Hill 2. The lead up to the first encounter with Pyramid Head is a lesson in pants-wetting terror( I believe the first time you see him he's standing motionless behind bars in a hallway; when you go into a nearby room and come back out he's gone).What that game did better than most is establish a feeling of constant, unrelenting dread. I can't recall how many times I had to stop playing for a while because I'd reached my freaked-out limit: the mannequins, the faceless bipedal creatures squirming on the ground, the morgue sequence. Gah! But like a chili-eating contest, I always came back for more abuse.
