It depends on what you means by screaming. If its singer a who sometimes gets a bit aggressive with their vocals ala Curt Cobain or such, but are still generally singers, then I'm absolutely fine with it. If its metal screaming, or those rock vocalists that rip out every note, then I can't stand it.

If it's the the Steven Tyler-style high-pitched screaming, I don't mind it. Anything I hate

I hated it, but then I listened to Mastodon. It still bugs me if the screaming is used so that the band can sound evil, because that's just too ridiculous for me. But Mastodon's sound is more bestial, more animalistic. It really matches the music

depends, i don't mind if it fits in the song, say mother by lennon but in certain songs it just sounds like they have nothing better to do, some metal songs i've heard for example

I'm furiously sick of listening to the singer of "Breaking Benjamin" sing soft lyrics then BURST into a blood-curdling scream. If you're going to sing scream-o, then just scream for the entire song and don't surprise me 3 minutes in.

If you're that poor of a musician that you resort to screaming instead of using any sort of true vocal talent, you shouldn't be making music.

How has Judas Priest gone unmentioned for this long? This injustice must be rectified!

HE! IS! THE! PAINKILLER!
THIS! IS! THE! PAINKILLER!

Also, the scream in Maiden's "Number of the Beast" is pretty phenomenal.

I love me a metal scream when it's well executed. Bad harsh vocals - see BrokeNCYDE who have already been mentioned - are just about as musically despicable as it gets though.

this song is fucking epic. thatnk you for posting it my good chap!

OT. screeaming is an integral part of much of the music i listen to (predominently metal and its sub genres) so im all for a bit of rough vocals.

don't know about you guys but i find it quite relaxing!

Periodically I listen to songs with screaming in them, but it generally diminished the experience. It doesn't hurt that most screaming bands are the metal equivalent of Techno, who just try and put out as much noise as they can to a thumping (or in this case, chugging) rhythm.

I usually can't stand it, as it ruins otherwise-great music [see Opeth].

For some reason, though, I've been addicted to this band lately. I guess it takes a particular type of scream. And great band-name. And quite possibly the best album cover I have seen in my life.

By and large, I avoid music with any kind of vocals.

Honestly? If it is once or twice when it fits in with the song that's fine. But every song or the entire thing? HECK NO. If I want screaming I will be around my sister.

I like screaming in music, when the singers can actually sing aswell, other than scream every fucking word
Seether, BFMV - to an extent, and Slipknot are examples.
I prefer grunting like Metallica and Black Label Society, and not these fuckwits that squeal down a microphone posing to a camera looking all pretty, and constantly screaming about how they're so great.
Fuck them right off.

I would like to know how people feel about screaming in songs. Do you like it or would it make you dislike the song instantly. Personally, I used to be in the latter a few years ago, and wouldnt touch a song with screaming in it,but my friends and I discovered many great bands that use screaming as part of their songs ie Alesana, A Day To Remember, as they use screaming and singing. Ive even gotten into The Devil Wears Prada, even thought they mostly scream. However, I still cant listen to Suicide Silence or Job For A Cowboy.

So Escapists, whats your view of screaming in music?
I think you would like Attack Attack. They suck too.

How can't you listen to Suicide Silence? They're actually good.

Here's a list you could use: Lamb of God, In Flames, Devil Driver. Just for starters.

To all you who think metal is screamo, you're retarded. Metal is good for one. Second, screamo is a bunch of bitchy kids crying, throwing an offhand scream in the mix so their fans think they're "hardcore."

I like when it is handled as what it is: An instrument. A strange instrument at that. It doesn't need to be used the whole song, and sometimes it may only get used for a few lines. I like when it is sprinkled on top of an already good song to just add some oomph. Atreyu's "Blow" is a good example. The chorus is extremely angry in a fun way, and screaming back-up vocals just make it sound like even more of a party song.

Songs in which the ONLY vocals are screaming annoy the piss out of me.

don't mean to flame but you are the sort of half witted ass hat that truly irritates me! it is rather difficult to do screaming vocals well in music and just because you don't find it to your taste doesn't immediately make it any less of a skill.

most of the truly talented bands utilize it in at least a handful of their songs and execute it beautifully; not that you'd be conviced otherwise by the inane ranting of a fellow interweb user.

good day to you sir!
