Nope, you need some social interaction to heal the wounds of Middle School. Those 4 years let you recover your identity.
Also, I'm kinda enjoying Calculus and Chem.

maybe not do away with it completely, but i don't see the harm in having other options. make it legal to start full-time work at 14, or start some colleges for that age group like the article mentioned. high school can be incredibly productive and personal, and i'm glad i had my time there (but then, i was a cheerleader, in an accelerated college-like program, with a close group of friends), but that's not to say it's for everyone. lots of kids do crash and burn in that environment, and deserve the chance to do something else.

personally, im really enjoying high school, i have enough independence to do what i want, but not enough to really fuck up my life. Plus the athletic program at my school is awesome. All in all, High School should stay, as is

Dude, you should check out a lot of Paul Graham's essays. He really tells it like it is.

For a lot of people, this is what a high school experience is for american children. For me, this better described my middle school experience opposed to HS, but I know this is how it is for many unfortunate individuals.

They shouldnt get rid of high school, but a complete reworking of the high school system would be good for everyone.

I hate to say this but high school IS an integral part of learning. We all hate it but without high school you don't have the proper education to go to Uni/TAFE/College etc and get a job. I go to a "Selective High School" and my friends and I get lots of work but we just have to endure for another 12 years. Also, like Dr Glocktor said, socialization.

A cuple of days ago in my compositon class we read an article about how high schools and how their time has past because of all the clicks, bulling, teachers, etc.

This is similar to the article i read.

What do you think should we get rid of high schools?
I think you just demonstrated that you still need high school.
I think he just demonstrated that he still needs to complete the fourth grade.

I learned the most in elementary and high school (and college), but next to nothing in middle school.

Then its probably different experiences. I know I learned all about being an adult. Learned about death, about loss, about due dates, about responsibilities, about looking good, about the importance of a resume. I learned all about being an adult and how to act like one, but then again, like i said, its probably experiences.
You had a pretty good experience in high school then I would say. However, most kids find they aren't prepared for college in the transition because high schools currently aren't preparing children properly.

We need high schools. If not for education, then to teach kids how to deal with people and build interpersonal skills.

I wouldnt really say it was good. I just teachers looking out for me and asked them how ot do things because they knew I had a REALLY good chance at college. I went to a bad highschool, were we had a kid die due to a fight outside school from a kid who went to our school over a girl.

It should still be provided. I do agree that there are some kids who simply don't care about education at all, and never apply themselves. Well, their loss. I'm a strong believer in knowledge for the sake of knowledge. My life would be far worse if I wasn't exposed to science and history and mathematics. I don't use 90% of the knowledge I have for my job, but I'm still glad I learned it, and it is a vital part of me. As you learn more, you grow more - as a person.

But when I say it should still be provided, and while I state that high-school is pretty damn useful, I don't think kids should be forced to go to high-school. And indeed, in Australia, you can drop out at 15. You'll find it very hard to get a good job, but you can drop the entire last two years of high-school entirely. Indeed, our Former state opposition leader Lawrence Springborg, dropped out of school at 14, and he almost became premier! Of an entire state! Of a country with a 1 trillion dollar economy!

But he's the exception - most people who drop out of school at a young age, don't go on to great things. If they couldn't muster the drive or the effort or the discipline to complete simple school work, it's unlikely they will be able to do more complex or important work later. Trust me on this - high-school academic work is dead simple. Wait till you get to university folks, it gets much tougher, especially with post-grad courses.

So if you drop out of high school you'll only be hurting yourself. It doesn't destroy your hopes of a good life, but it certainly stacks the odds against you. And in this economy, in this demanding economic age, trust me, you DON'T want that. Employers can afford to be picky. There's so many unemployed people, that they know they can demand the best of the best.

As for ELIMINATING high school, heck no! You aren't nearly educated enough to attempt university work by the time you leave middle-school or primary school. You still need an institution that can impart the knowledge necessary for people to go to college/university or whatnot. You still need that institution to be freely available to the public, as education is one of the great social levers.

You can't get rid of high-school, and even if you did, you'd have to replace it with something that would be just the same.

If you belong to a clique that wants to drop schools, raise your hand.

How else would everyone waste 4 years of their life?

The military? Nah.

I had to unlearn everything I learned in highschool to get through college, luckily highschool doesn't teach much in the first place.

You know, I truely believe what you just said (having experienced it) and yet when I say something like that people write me off as an egotistical jerk without even an explanation.

keep high school but change the curriculum and teaching ways etc to make it a better thing, as i hate most of my classes in high school because of the teachers and how they teach, act etc.
