Guys, guys, you're missing the point. :)

I'm not saying it's wrong to finish main quest. I'm simply wondering why :
1. ...take on the main storyline, finish only it, without trying some subquests on the route.
2. ...stop playing Skyrim afterwards, leaving roughly 3/4 of map unexplored.
Some may have limits to their gaming time but also I'm hearing that many of the technical issues are showing up the larger the file size gets. Maybe they want to finish before the freezes/crashing sets in.

Why do you think i have problem with that ? I'm simply curious.
The bit I bolded is why I think you had a problem with it. It's a Bethesda giganto-RPG; there isn't one way it was meant to be played. I think the general consensus is play their games however the hell you want to, there's no shortage of things to do or methods to do them, so go nuts in whatever way you can.

And also, in answer to your initial question of 'Why the rush', I guess to me it was because I got so immersed I felt like I had to deal with Alduin soon, or the world would be destroyed.
In that sense, I guess I could claim that I played the game how it's meant to be played: Embracing my destiny as Dragonborn and dedicating my time to saving the world.

But like I said, there is no one way the game is meant to be played.

Side note: In fact, I recommend people deal with the main quest as swiftly as possible if they want Alduin to still be a challenge; I was only level 36 or something and he was by far the easiest dragon I have ever fought, no exaggeration whatsoever.

Same here. For my husband the door was just bloody open. Maybe there is a secondary entry way.
I already mentioned (I think in this very thread) that one of the amulet pieces is only attainable by doing the Mage College's questline. They open the door to the final peice in one of their quests.

Hope that helps. :)
Thanks all of you guys, this really helps!

I've yet to get the game (and may never do, if my desktop can't handle it D=) but I've seen my friend play it. I'm pretty much planning on heading to the scummiest, poorest place I can find the moment I can, raising my way up the ranks, making myself a little bit of income, finding the skills that suit my guy, and then and only then start the quests that allow dragons to spawn everywhere and invest my perks in what I think will be areas that are useful for my character.

My first playthrough of Skyrim will be for the roleplay of a guy who finds himself only just about scraping by to full-fledged hero of the lands. The subsequent ones will be dickheads of the highest order killing people for funsies. =D

I don't think that crpg gaming and Bethesda's games in particular were meant for such people. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but c'mon. Sandboxing games for someone who desn't have time ? :)

Possible, but rather far fetched, don't you think ? ;)

Like i said before : I don't have any problem with people playing games as they wish to. I'm simply curious why they do it that way. I find it a little weird that despite me stating that clearly you're still playing that card. :)

Anyway...
You say "immersed". That's interesting...
Ok, let's elaborate : how could you/your character possibily know that Alduin wants to destroy world ?

I survived initial attack, killed one or two dragons, did Hrothgars quests, wandered here and there, doing a little this and that, sided with Blade's agent, spoke with some people, stole some things, and still i have (or rather my heroine has) no clue about motivation of dragons or whoever is responsible for their return.
Hell, nobody does. Hrothgars, most powerful wizards, advisors to Jarls are only scratching their heads, and producin some rumours, speculations about why dragons are back, but still, nothing solid, nothing substantial.
Yet you say you felt time running out. Not only Skyrim's (as i understand) but whole world's. How's so ?

And please bear in mind : what drives me is curiosity. If i'd like to offend you, this conversation would be different. ;)

some people dont want to do everything on one character i cant blame them. the amount leadership roles you acquire is impressive and to do that all on one character makes the game silly. some people go pure mage so beside some side quest and the college quest line there isn't much beyond the main story that they feel related.

My does a Thief join the Mage College? why does an assassin want to be a thane of every hold?

I've been playing Bethesda's games since Morrowind. And the only time I've ever played through the main story was Fallout 3. It's the only one I've actually taken the time to buckle down and beat the damn thing.
And I play these games a lot. On Oblivion alone I've played with at least 15 characters. And maybe three of them have actually got to the point where Oblivion Gates start appearing.
That shows how far into the storyline I go. I'd like to someday get all the way through, but I just have too much fun seeing what's around the next corner.

30 hours so far, level 25, and i have so many quests i cant even remember which one is the main one, but 20 hours ago i vaguely remember walking up some steps on the way to a monastery.
my character being an orc thinks the petty brawls between weak and stupid rulers is barley worth his time and effort.
In my orc's mind there is more important things we should be worrying about like the dragons or events that can destroy life as a whole. will people remember ulfric or the legion or even the thalmor after 100 years? or will they remember the dragons, who, left unchecked could have destroyed everything and ended all life?

Not at all. Why would it be.

They said the same thing about New Vegas and I as well as many others rushed to the ending when it started crashing every 15 mins. Mind you, this was after Bethesda patched it a few times....yet before the "big patch" that came out 6 months after launch.

Have you ever seen the crazy list of things people do in an attempt to get a Bethesda game to work properly? Rushing to the end is probably one of the least intrusive tactics.

Well, I guess I'm taking my sweet ass time, because I'm only nine hours in! :p

Shut up! College is busy work!

Oh, and I don't where I can say it, but I guess I'll say it here: It is so goddamn hard to get a dragon's attention. Seriously, I've seen these things overhead and they pay no attention to me. I've been shooting about fifty arrows at the damn things and I get nothing!

At the 20 hour mark for me, I had already beat the main quest not because I rushed it buy because it was soooo short! Most of the 20 hours was side stuff.

Soooooooooo, my fellow Escapists, after reading yet another topic starting like this "after 20-30 hours i finally have beaten Skyrim and i find both main quest and its ending, blah, blah, blah"...
Because they've done just that. They've taken the 30 hours of Main Quest to get immersed, and roleplay their characters, their Dovakin (sp), who would do the Main Quest urgently, and not waste time with side-quests. If Dragons were fucking shit up in England, I wouldn't waste time looking around at all of the pretty places, collecting items, and doing random crap for passers-by.

I'm 50 hours in, and I have to say the most exciting moments are when I'm wandering the countryside, looking for berries or new places to discover, and SUDDENLY DRAGON. Seriously, I had one epic half-hour where I ran into and killed five different dragons. I could actually see two of them circling in the sky while I was fighting one on the ground.

And it's moments like that that keep me coming back, and keep me wandering the countryside for hours.

I've had a major issue with one of the quests triggering. "Blood on the Ice" is the quest that you must complete in order to marry Shahvee (The only marry-able argonian female in the game). Well, in order to trigger it, you must enter Windhelm at around 2:00 AM to find a murder scene in the graveyard and initiate the quest. Well, this never worked and I wasted about 3 hours trying to get the damn thing to trigger.

Any tips?

I'm at 198 hours played and I'm still finding new stuff. o.o I haven't even done a lot of the main questlines yet.

Very happy with the content in this game.

"Currently I'm doing that Gauldur Amulet pieces quest, but can't find out how to open the door to Saarthal...."

I think that if you start the Mage Questline (Winterhold), you'll be able to get into Saarthal.

Simple answer, the world, while beautiful, gets dull, I've walked around, and there's yet a town or a person I've met, that I'd actually want to take some interest in, the most exciting thing so far was screwing over a deity. I hope it comes back to bite me in the ass, probably won't... but still.

Just came to Riften, found it pretty dull.

Skyrim is a perfectly crafted world, however, the stories that are within it, are hardly engaging, at least for me there aren't that many. The mage academy is showing some promise though, even though you can't develop a relationship with anyone there, at least that was my impression.

For me anyway I actually discovered the quest line tips before the actual murder scene maybe if you look for people you can question about it. (I think for me it was the Captain guy) Then when I walked around a corner I found someone else had been murdered. The people I spoke to only mentioning 2 murders.

I know its kind of vague but I hope it helps.

(If my paragraph is too spoilery please message me and I'll change it made an effort for it not to be :p)
